I had a friend in the mid 90’s who was a exotic car mechanic. At the time he had around 300k worth of tools. Mac made him a one off custom toolbox that was 18 feet long. He had so many special tools just for doing very specific jobs on these cars.

When I was a mechanic most of the other mechanics would make fun of me because I kept my area clean and organized. Usually when I started working at a new shop I’d spend a couple of days cleaning my stall and adding lights. Made a lot more money than the other mechanics who spent their time looking for their own tools

I like how this guy is so commited to his kermit green so he cant loose things in engine bays, really smart, finding that toolbox in the bay when the lights go off would be tough.
@ghostwrench2292
@ghostwrench2292 Жыл бұрын
The truth is chrome tools are just as easy to find in engine bays as well and they have the advantage of the thinner handles for when you’re working in tight engine compartments. I imagine a mid engine car like Mclaren would have pretty tight engine compartments. I like the feel of those colored, comfort handle tools but as far as ratchets are concerned, I prefer the functionality of regular chrome handles. On my 24” long, 1/2” drive ratchet that is unlikely to be used in tight areas, I did buy that that one with a comfort handle. Orange is my color choice for handles.

I’m tending to agree with you here. I installed oil pump gears and camshafts on an HVAC tech’s Mustang with the Coyote engine. He tipped me $100. I work in a performance shop now after 15 years in dealerships. At the dealers, tips are few and far between because most customers only go to dealers for warranty repairs on their 4 wheeled appliance. They don’t give 2 shits about there as long as it drives. Customers at performance shops love their cars and appreciate the work we do.

I colorfill my tools by crudely filling them with a paint marker and then wiping them down lightly. It takes off all the excess paint and leaves the low spots colored and takes 10 seconds, not to mention that it looks better. Filling them with a brush is insane. Seems like a cool guy with cool tools, though.

Dealers are required by most manufacturers to have brand specific tools for the technicians to repair their vehicles. I worked at a Ford dealership with about 60 techs and although the dealer had all the special tools we needed, many techs bought their own to have. The time wasted stopping work to go check out a tool, or more commonly, wait for the tech who is using it to finish with it, it just made sense for us to buy the tool for our own use.

I apologize to all of the Matco fan-boys, but Matco doesn't make anything. They have absolutely no manufacturing plants whatsoever. they design some tools in-house like their toolboxes & ratchets. EG; they design their ratchets, from the finishes to the handles, but they are manufactured by someone else. Other tools they might make subtle changes & call it their own. They are really good at buying someone else's tools and designs and putting their name brand on them.

If you'd know the amount of forgotten tools I've found in cars. And not only small sockets and stuff...I've found a foot long 21mm wrench under an BMW intake once. These grids ard great. I use foam inlays and the big disadvantage is the addition of new stuff or if the manufacturer changes something it doesn't fit anymore...

@xcofcd Same. I do roadside assistance for AAA and I am always finding tools under people's hoods. I ask them who was the last person to go under their hood, and then let them know to being it back when they can. I know the pain of losing tools.
