Gday everyone. I'm super excited to announce that building is now in the game!! Finally. This was huge update and was the most complex thing in terms of game design I have ever done. Thank you all for the support :)
Building:
You can now build using a variety of voxel tools.
Shapes:
There are various procedural shapes that you can use to quickly build with. These include: Box, Capsule, Cylinder, Cone, Hexagon, Hexagonal Cone, Path and Sphere.
Prefabs:
There a many prefab objects that you can build with. These include: Slopes, Windows, Fences etc.
Props:
You can decorate your builds with a variety of props. These include: Tables, Chairs, Barrels, Crates, Candles, Couches, Doors, Beds, Bookshelves and more.
Resource Collection:
Resources can now be harvested using their respective tools. E.g hammer for stone, axe for wood etc.

Maybe it would be handy to for players to make their own models, and (if they have the materials) place them. That way if they design a really intricate wall/floor/roof/decoration, they would be able to save it and easily replicate it.

In its current form, I don't think so. Minecraft is extremely easy to pick up and play and build *something* decent, relatively quickly, that's part of the mass appeal. Working with smaller block sizes, that seem to require a lot more resource collection, and then needing to scroll through like 12 options to get the block shape you want every single time makes building a lot more arduous. The greater level of detail you can achieve will attract plenty of people, but there's a trade off with ease of use here, and that'll turn a lot of others away.
@generalsalami8875
@generalsalami8875 2 ай бұрын
It'd be awesome if you could save blueprints of structures that you've built before. You could funnel resources into this 3d blueprint. Upon putting all the resources into the blueprint, it'll begin to automatically construct itself. So that players can't abuse this & just build a mansion in a second, the construction should take time, in accordance with the quantity of resources needed & the blueprint's scale over large distances.
@_MrEric
@_MrEric 23 күн бұрын
This would just turn the game into a building simulator, imo keeping the building mechanic being manual will make each building feel more special and not "that building might be a copy pasted version of another but a little bit different" but at the end of the day it's just my two cents.
@defectiveparts8604
@defectiveparts8604 19 күн бұрын
@@_MrEricAlso as nice of a theory it is, it would required every type of block in the print to be called out, so unless you have exactly those blocks it would be useless, as otherwise you would have to program each block to be part of family and every section of every blueprint would have to be tied to a family of blocks, but what if you have more than one block from the same family? It would break it, so in actuality, it would be a massive headache to implement and to keep updated. They would have to be exact prints every time, you wouldn't be able to say swap types of wood etc without massive efforts put into the feature.

@@OscarLouw Ooh yeah an extruding tool would work really well. Like in that part where he was making a fence with the cylinders, instead of placing each one by hand he could like multi-select the base of each one and then extrude it up. Beyond that I think the most important thing would be easy keyboard shortcuts for stuff like rotations (to avoid the thing that happened when he was making the roof where he had to cycle through like five rotations every time he switched between the outer and inner slope) and switching between related shapes like the normal slope, the slope corner the slope point etc. Just the less steps you need to take to perform a common action the better. (Possibly also with stuff like the slopes you could just have one slope option and then let the player modulate the height/steepness somehow? Like if you're doing those shapes procedurally you might as well expose some of the variables more directly. Though idk how you'd set up a control scheme for that which could be shared between all the different shapes)

Oh another suggestion/feedback! It could also help streamline the process of building at 6:41. When selecting the shape of a window, you place it's first point/corner with the first click, then you just look to where you want it to fit in the opposite corner (like resizing an image) that automatically scales(or just switches between the premade sizes you currently select in the ui). kinda like the drag and click building like you were doing with the base of the structure, but more specific for placing resizable flat-ish things like windows, fences, beams, (maybe doors)etc so you could just select the shape of the window, and not have to open the ui over and over for every window size in our builds, it'd just make things a bit more convenient i'd think

This is a very impressive toolkit to give to players. It immediately created the wishful thinking how amazing it would be, in a game like this, to be able to create and save your own decorative box in some kind of ingame editor (like a very detailed workbench or something) to create blueprints to place for objects, so you can make blueprints of your own created furniture that you can then build with the necessary ressources, the same way that there seem to be premade things like the bookshelf, candles, chests etc. Maybe even with the function of the preexisting items.

Vintage Story not looks funny, i mean, i'am a old minecraft player, and vintage story looks a downgrade in the most important aspects to me, freedom, because on vintage story you had class and not matters how good the rest are, if you choice the wrong class, you are fucked for ever, not matters how small the difference between class could be, i hate this mechanic really hard for soo many time, due to losted time, that i can't play anything that you had hard class system, where is not attached to gear only items or crafting tables... Terraria does a really nice job of progression using only itens, you can reach new level try a lot of combinations and is it, every level unlocks new itens to combat, new furniture as well, everthing runs smooth on terarria progression... Better than minecraft and for sure classless mechanics LOL

I've just now discovered your channel, and I don't know what this game is like beyond this revolutionary building system, but I'd imagine it'd make a great MMO RPG where the main focus isn't to become as powerful as possible, but rather to do whatever you want. Servers could work differently, too. Instead of being able to simply create a world you can choose from one of few other servers. That way, people could work together to build things that affect the entire community of the game, rather than just a small group of friends. It's a new and abstract kind of idea for a game, but it would make for a great one.

have you thought about adding some kind of optimisation using node links? like for the tree you cut at the start, you can check each damage you deal where it is, then check for nearby links and if they have been broken, so you don't have to check the entire tree, just a local check most algorithms using a similar kind of voxel destruction are far from linear time and thus gets extremely slow on larger structures, and even having just 2 links separating the structure in two can reduce the time by an order of 4-8x having a tree that's evenly segmented can thus allow you to remove any noticeable lag.

The building system is amazing. I also really love that you need to actually chop the branches off the fallen tree. I hope that the progression to get stuff doesn't feel too easy - so that if you see someone with a beautiful castle it really feels like an accomplishment. I also hope that there's interesting stuff to do in these buildings. I feel in Minecraft like I'll build an awesome base, and then just have nothing to do in it. Understand though that I'm coming at this after getting really into Vintage Story - where the progression is harder, and may not be for all players. I think that difficulty though, like I mentioned, adds more to actually do in your homes and other buildings. In Vintage Story you _need_ shelter to survive cold weather. Food is important, so you'll have more of a vested interest in making a nice kitchen, and it's really fun to bake pies and stuff. I wish you luck. There are a LOT of Minecraft like voxel games being made on KZbin right now, and I hope you'll be able to carve an interesting niche. I also hope with all these projects you and others are making, that great mechanics aren't discarded just because "someone did it first." All this said, I'm really excited to see where this goes!

@@WasatchWind its just happens because mojang forces players with bad mechanics to farm... it moves the comunity to use bad design to keep the rate high... I'am a person that try to balance both. My farms has a good enough ratio and good design somehow at least... But because of the issue that is get enough resources anyway, in survival it is not well decorated... My iron farm produces equal to any flying 3 villagers with a zombie farm, but i can build arround it a entire house, or even others structures, because i not just abuse of iron golem spawn mechanics, but also put effort to make it possible to build arround without making the farm break. I do the same with all possible farms, some you have to hide the effective system to be more beuaty, but some are actually really easy to blend with a nice building... My bee farm is literally under a garden open air and it works flawless, because bees had some hiden mechanics that aim to flower arround, also can't go further away the hive also, avoid water, also avoid rain and night... you can use ejectors to share to bottle up honey, you blend a redstone under the region with be hives and you can make it really nice and beuaty... But, it really sacrifice space, soo most player that want honeyblocks have to had a giant farm to have those in large ammounts, because the mechanics of producing honey bottles are really bad and slow. Slime farm is a even harder to deal with, because you can't build anywhere, you have to force the location, same with crystal and others, shamefull forcing player to locations, is the worst reasson i want to move to another game, but can't because sincerely i no found any good enought game, any time i saw levels or classes it already remove all my interest... I'am checking hytales for years already, but without releasing, is not a today option, this game looks pretty nice, and vintage story has class, i just can't play, not matter how small effects the game gives to each class, i felt totally bad about it. I prefer valheim instead, but valheim has a dark vibe that is too much for long time playing, also the game is impossible to beat solo, at least i just reach a certain point, and few friends of mine has the quality of play the same game for long, we always start something and play until real life get in and eventually we forget about the game much early than the end of content or story LOL

Having it swing left, right, then straight when that has an actual impact on WHERE the tool strikes can be kind of annoying to work around if youre trying to hit a specific spot. Either make every seing straight forward, or some kind of way to choose which way you swing, and tool use will feel a lot better since theres more consistent control over it. Aside from that, the entire game oooks absolutely gorgeous, as does your build with it. Im amazed you made this yourself

This is amazing. One suggestion would be to allow players to make their own prefabs. It looks like you can do extremely small scale building, so why not allow them to build something in a specific area, like a workbench of sorts, to save it as a prefab forever. Take, for example, when you used the slope and had to keep rotating and flipping it over and over. If the player wanted to, they could place one normal slope, one flipped and rotated slope, and save it as a prefab. Then they could just place that over and over, making it way easier to build complex structures.
