To everyone saying get a camera strap: 1) pro-level video cameras don't have straps 2) straps often get in the way when shooting video. Great video! NYU film pride. Managed not to break any lenses in my 4 years, but often removed the front filters because they seemed to muddy up the beautiful lens flares you can get with high-quality glass

Sean is really methodical! Adam probably just wanted to use his bandsaw to remove the filter so Norman could have a heart attack. LOL! I really loved seeing Norm's frightened face every time Adam went to his bandsaw. Where is Simone?

I have never seen most of the tools in this video before. Where do you buy the lens wrenches at? Do they very based upon type of lens you own?
@christopherstewart522 Жыл бұрын
I find it helpful to remove filtler with the old rubber grippers used to open jars, or an oil filter wrench with the rubber strap. Both have worked great for me anytime my filters have been stuck, I keep the oil filter wrench in my camera setup as it worked best, folds up compact, I actually bought specifically for taking off lens filter.

The problem I've run into after purchasing some old film slrs is finding a spanner small enough to accommodate removing the wind levers. The lens ones don't close down enough. I ended up having to diy with a dowel and 2 tiny brads. But I'd love to find the actual tool. Surprised it's so difficult.

As they said in the video the filter can protect the lens itself from things that could cause damage. For those who play airsoft for instance something like a filter could be used a what I call a sacrificial lens.

I habitually use a strap, and generally dont use filters due to flares. However, I probably should use filters. Straps arent going to save your lens every time. For example, before I ever had my own camera, my dad was the photographer of the family. One time he told me to go grab his bag so he could change lenses. He didnt told me it was unzipped, and I assumed it was closed. Second I picked it up, his nice telephoto fell out on the asphalt. He used it immediately though since it looked fine. Come to find out, I ruined a few of his photos... Because the filter on the front was cracked. ... Basically, the filter saved his lens. And it fell out of a bag, a camera strap wouldng have saved it in that case.
@hatman48182 жыл бұрын
PS, I've taken my own camera into places where a filter probably should've been used. Lots of ocean spray, or blowing sand. I'm honestly surprised I havent seriously scratched my lenses or ruined my camera.

my canon 70-200 IS ii has a dent on filter thread. i can't even put the front cap as easy as before and i can't put filter as well. a lot of technicians told me that they going to open the whole lens just to fix and charge me that much, but as i watch in youtube it is not that how they'd fix it. I want to buy a wrench lens to fix it by myself but I'm scared. can i remove the first layer of the lens before use the wrench to avoid damaging it?

concerning the Rubber mat recommendation, McMaster CARR offers 5 different hardnesses...30A(Soft), 40A(Medium Soft), 50A(Medium), 60A(Medium Hard), 70A(Hard). Sean said something about the mat being really soft, so I ordered the 30A Soft. Also, As someone else asks ... where to purchase the filter thread file??

Does anyone know how to fix my Sony NEX-5R? When I turn it on, it goes straight to USB Mode (even when no cable is connected) making it unusable. This happens about 90% of the time I turn it on. If it doesn't, it will eventually after a couple pictures are taken.
@RupeeRhod7 жыл бұрын
Not knowing much about that camera, I do have played around with stuff that switches state dependent on usb connection. So this is just a guess for a very simple issue that could cause big problems: If your usb port on the camera is damaged so it shorts (or unshorts) a specific pin, the camera will think something is plugged in, and throw itself to a usb mode. The fix for this would simply be to replace said port and make sure the connections internally to that port has no damage. A hack to be tried is to get a cable that fits your camera, whatever usb connector it uses, and cut off the cable stuff and exposing the internal wires. Then you can proceed to plugin said connector to the camera, and cross different wires to see if the camera expects certain shorts. If you find out it does expect such, you can basically create your own dongle hack, which you can plugin to make it stay in camera mode. This is all suggestions for if you don't want to send it to a camera repair dude, and making the assumption it's on the connector end where you yourself possibly can do something to fix it. Also you may also be as lucky that cleaning the inside of the connector with a cotton stick and some cleaning alcohol will work.

I question the statement of not using a UV Filter. Prolong exposure to UV can cause the lens coatings to separate from the glass and the your your lens is tost. Also it can prevent lens fungus from forming inside the lens. A simple UV Filter is a must on all my cameras lenses.
