If you'd played the original trilogy, then you'd know that Qwark is more than just the wannabe hero. He is one of the most surprisingly complicated characters in video game history, managing to be completely unlikeable yet utterly likeable at the same time (depending on the game). As someone who played all the non-spinoff R&C's back to back, I went straight to this from Up Your Arsenal. I liked it a lot, though I will confess that I too had issues with the checkpoint system and some of the damage scaling. That was something that was problematic in Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal as well, but not to the extent it was here. The game really wants you to dodge every attack with nanotech and armor acting as insurance, but the result is there's not much room for error. All I know is that I was cool with Jak II having distant checkpoints and only four hits, so I'm cool with Ratchet doing it with better gunplay. Point is, I understand why you feel this installment is underrated and forgotten in favor of Crack in Time and the OG trilogy. I'm not sure where I'd rank it, but I did appreciate the ways they developed on the storytelling as well as the HD facelift. Good review.

+ExoParadigmGamer I really do need to play the original games. I have the HD collection sitting around and I've only ever played 1. I'm not exactly thrilled to hear that the nanotech and checkpoint system is nothing new, but I was able to get past it in this game so hopefully I'll feel the same way with 2 and 3 when I eventually get around to them. Thanks! Personally, It's currently my second favorite Ratchet and Clank game. Even though I think A Crack in Time is better, I would prefer people even MENTION ToD. Ah well, they're both great games anyway!

KingK I don`t se how the damage and health systeme is broken. It is supposed to be like when the enemis do more damage further into the game, you buy a new armor so that they do the same prosent of damage of you as befor you bought the armor when you where earlier in the game.

Just going to put it out there in case it makes you curious, R&C 1 is fairly different than the other two. Going Commando introduces some modern Ratchet wisdoms (Such as weapon upgrades and arenas). While Up your Arsenal polishes them and gets pretty close to being a 3rd person shooter (The sequel becomes full shooter). Personally, I like to think that ToD had the best of both worlds of R&C 2 and 3. So if you're having trouble getting into the original trilogy you should try playing the original Ratchet and Clank last. Just a fair warning though in case you start playing them, HD trilogy was a little rushed and introduces new graphical issues like game Slowdown/bad alpha handling. Slowdown even worse if you're playing it from the PS3's HDD due to the reading speed on a blu-ray being faster than the HDD. Oh and I guess the review was cool too, lol. If it weren't for A Crack in Time, ToD is close to being the favorite.

Huh... I never found an issue with the health, though that may be because I spent so much time clearing through the arena challenges, gaining leviathan souls, collecting gold bolts, and hunting down holo plans, that I was able to level up plenty by the end of the game. Pretty sure I had about 315HP by the time I finished the game again recently. As for the original trilogy, they are pretty excellent. There are a few things that have been lost since then, like how the first couple of games were full of hilarious satire, much less linear level design, and tons of expressive and unique one-off characters.

As a kid I had a PS3, and because I didn’t get a lot of game I played a lot of Demos. Two demos I played the most were Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time (they made two demos for ACIT which is cool). I always preferred ToD, but when I finally played both recently I found ACIT being my favorite and almost one of my favorite Ratchet and Clank games. I think the pacing and cutscenes were pretty jarring for me in ToD. It feels like you’re jumping from planet to planet to planet. They feel less like planets and just a level to get through.

Save more often, or save after every time you enter a new area. When you leave the game and join back it shouldn’t teleport you straight back at the beginning of the level as it gets tedious if you’re stuck on a specific part of a level and have to go, and when you come back you have to do everything again.

Not a huge fan of this game, mainly because it introduced the whole "Ratchet AND Clank are both super special people, actually!!!" plot into the series. While the whole "Ratchet is the last Lombax" arc that stretches throughout the 'Future' series was interesting to me, Clank's arc as the "son of the Zoni time keeper" was bland and boring. It should've stuck to the story of the first game, Ratchet being an ordinary mechanic and Clank being a defect robot. Other than that, I have my own personal quirks with the game: - The way Ratchet looks... I can't quite explain it, but he looks a bit odd to me, which was fixed in 'A Crack in Time' - he looks amazing as fuck there. - The whole character of the smuggler, who just serves as a plot device. - Planets were boring and bland, and not worth coming back to, after finished. - A lot of weapons were hit or miss - for example, the buzz blades, the shard reaper and the claws (forgot the actual name) are really fun weapons.... but then you have something like the tornado launcher, which is next to useless. - The enemy variety was so crap... you have about 4 main enemies you keep fighting throughout the whole game - which is VERY lazy, considering that Insomniac used to create different species for each planet in the first two games. - Game was super linear... again, first three games in the trilogy had about 2-3 different paths you could take on each planet. So yeah... it was a decent game, but it's definitely not the best of the series. The best games in the series are the original trilogy, and A Crack in Time, the first game being my favorite. The first game has the best story and best overall game design, since almost every encounter in the game requires a different strategy and weapon. Plus, the lack of upgrades is a positive, since all of your weapons do a set amount of damage, so they NEVER become useless. The game itself is also quite challenging. Even coming back to it, I sometimes struggle with certain parts, even when I've beaten the game countless times. AND, the planets are the best they've ever been - like in the whole series... in my opinion of course. The second game fixed Ratchet's sluggish and slow movement, added the strafing mechanic, weapon upgrade system, Insomniac Museum, skins, armor and introduced a fan favorite character, Angela (who's a Lombax, like Ratchet, so the whole "last Lombax arc" looks even more silly), and had plenty of interesting planets. The third game, is my least favorite of the trilogy. I dislike the story, most of the new characters are kind of boring, with the exception of Dr. Nefarious, Lawrence and the planets felt watered down because they were getting more and more linear. However, it did add a lot of cool new stuff, such as evolving the health and weapon upgrade system, adding a sort of hub area where I spent so much time screwing around as a kid, being able to customize your ship, playing a fun 2D side scroller, etc. A Crack in Time is a very fun game, finally having a decent serious story (after a long line of mediocre stories imo), introducing the "flying around more-or-less freely in space" mechanic, hover-boots, actually fun Clank sections (a first in the series), etc. Even with it's many flaws, it's still a series that I love dearly. I feel it's very underrated, mainly because the "action-platformer" genre isn't as popular as it used to be before, but it's a series that has many die-hard fans, and I'm proud to be one of them!
@decadentgamer31087 жыл бұрын
Your look through was fine and all but I highly recommend to play through the original games out if you haven't yet. I know that maybe it'll feel weird since you played through the Future Trilogy first and I know for sure you're probably not going to enjoy the first game because of how dated it may feel and you may not get engaged in the story compared to the more deeper feel the Future Series took with it but the second and third game are definitely worth at least one play through. Some of your complaints like the battle combat section where you said death came too frequently. I think that's part of the charm because these games still used the formula we played with in Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal so by then, the players who played the games consecutively would've been more aware of what to look out for and keep a look on your Nanotech (especially after playing Up Your Arsenal as that game had quite a few challenging moments that could be downright frustrating at times). But I mean I get it, I get that you just didn't get around to playing the original games in full so it's understandable why this would be aggravating. And then the little thing on the music, music is subjective, I totally get it but if you play the original games, you'll maybe understand why some of the fans of the original games who jumped into Tools of Destruction may feel that the Tools of Destruction OST was a bit underwhelming. But again, music is subjective and all that, just thought I'd point this out because I'm kinda guilty of liking the original music way more than the music in Tools of Destruction or Quest for Booty... lol Personally, I was a little late getting into the series as I came around the series in 2004 when Going Commando came out but to this day, I love both the originals and the Future series. It's an example of a game series that stayed consistently good, at least compared to the other 3D Platform titans like Crash Bandicoot (Wrath of Cortex, Nitro Kart, and the Mutant spinoffs), Spyro (Enter the Dragonfly, Legacy of Darkness, and the Legend of" reboot), and Sonic to an extent. It showed just how great InsomniacGames can be with their game developing even in the case of Into the Nexus that had its fair share of problems or even the Remake of the original game. And no matter how old these games get, both original and future, they will always be some of my most favorite Platform games of all time, it's even to a point where they highly influenced my own Game making endeavors as I want to join and be part of a team to make a 3D Platformer some day lol At the end of the day, my little nitpicks may just be because while I got into the Ratchet & Clank games a game late (2004, nor 2002), I played the games as each game came out (except for Quest for Booty) and the fact that you kept mentioning how Tools of Destruction was your childhood makes me forget that you may be younger. Not saying that it's bad or anything, it just means that it can play on how one sees a game. Like using myself for example, I got into the Sly Cooper games WAY late into it's lifespan, in fact it was practically dead by the time I got to it and I never understood why the games were thought so highly of until I actually played them and understood why lol But regardless, good look through and hopefully when you do get around to the original games, you'll have some fun with them. Maybe not as much fun as the future series but still fun lol

The original PS2 games are by far the best, the first and third being the absolute of the series. Mostly this is because of the HUGE sense of "world" building, even from the growth in technology from game to game or the interactions you have with the characters that return here or there. Everything in the Future series, and even the remake of the original, feels like Insomniac took a look at the very basic reasons why they could call something a Ratchet and Clank game and streamlined those reasons into the ps3 and ps4 titles, but also with a bigger emphasis on gunplay because it's not as viable to use the wrench as it was in the original series as well as it just not being as fun. It lacks the sense that was most crucial for a game about exploring the universe and because of that it isn't as wondrous to take part in the stories within it.

I don't understand how anyone can say that UYA is the best of the og trilogy... GC will always be the peak of the series
@yojoehojo42916 жыл бұрын
UYA is often referred to as the best because Insomniac took what they did in 2 and ironed out every single problem that was in the gameplay, that and they clearly had fun developing it while the 2nd was a logistical nightmare and that comes across in how everything plays out. I do agree that 3 isn't as great as people make it out to be, but I wouldn't necessarily say that the 2nd is much better. Due to Going Commando we have the staples of the Ratchet and Clank series, which is in fact what started the horrendous streamlining we have today. From a game developers standpoint you should only make a sequel if you have something to add and something you wish to change up for the better. This is why the, for instance, Jak series is a mess, because Naughty Dog wanted to get away from the general idea of Jak and Daxter due to it being too similiar in feel to Crash Bandicoot but were forced to keep going with it due to Sony asking for another. That is why Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal is the beginning of the wave of creativity for the series crashing, because they didn't do anything besides fix a few problems and take away from the fact that it was initially a platformer shooter at heart. This is also why many of the developers left and made High Impact Games, which was the studio to come out with Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank before the series returned back to the few that stayed at Insomniac. I also wish to mention that everyone who worked on the first and second titles didn't actually get a chance to work on the next games due to a weird system they have at Insomniac where they switch developers to other projects which only seems problematic because they don't have the same creative minds behind the projects they were taken off of. Granted, I do realize that makes sense from the standpoint of working on something for so long that the project becomes stale to you.

+KingK What about Ratchet&ClankFuture:QuestForBooty?? Especially with your love for space pirates! Btw, I LOVED the original Quadrilogy(you keep saying trilogy, like Ratchet:Deadlocked never existed!), BUT Ratchet&Clank build upon each game, and ToolsOfDestruction is the perfect version of what R&C was trying to do on the PS2, with upgrades of course. I’m not saying you shouldn’t play the quadrilogy, but it’ll never feel to you, what it did to me, waiting for each one to come out. Anyways, aCrackInTime, ToolsOfDestruction, QuestForBooty, The remake, and IntoTheNexus, are all near perfect, they’re all you need. Of course if you want a challenge, R&C2:GoingCommando is definitely the hardest, it’s really fun, & has the best upgrade system , where you can actually notice a differences. Deadlocked gets hard too, but it’s big on Arena fights & platforming. Whatever you decide to do, AT THE VERY LEAST watch all of the cut scenes from all 4 games. They’ve got great villains. I've noticed something with most of your videos in the regard that many of your "1st"s in a series would be the more recent editions rather than the originals or classics as they are now. Examples would be metroid, this, legend of zelda, and a couple others indicate you either just got to them incredibly late (metroid for example) or wasn't old enough to experience them (legend of zelda N64 games for example). How ever guessing which generation you may be from is suspicious because you might just be someone who grew up with a pc rather than a console. It's interesting as it would make most people believe that you're a millennial, so around 18-19 or very early 20s.
@reNINTENDO6 жыл бұрын
If you were born between 1985 to 2000, you're considered a millennial (the exact dates aren't... exact, but those are some of the more commonly agreed upon ones). Ive played through it just about every year since then but I still haven’t gone back to play the old ones and I probably never will. I have a pretty petty reason for it too. I just find Ratchet’s character model really ugly. He looks like Future Ratchet’s retarded brother. It’s just always bothered me for some reason. Yes, but this and Quest For Booty's original soundtracks are by far David Bergeaud's worst compositional works within the regard of this series. Presumably, because of the fact they hired a movie writer for the Future Series, Insomniac games requested that each compositional piece is like an orchestrated piece. However, the music became boring and bland in comparison to the fast synthesized melodies that we got in the previous titles because of this. With that being said, some of the pieces still carry the feeling of the music from the previous titles. An example being the piece that plays while your in the docks of Kortog City, which very heavily reminds me of the Gemini Moons in Ratchet and Clank 3 (this probably being so because he definitely used the same Synthesized beeping sound and progression, but sped up in the regard of tempo.)

Ah shame about that remake. If it was just the original game but with that schmancy new paint job it might have been worth it. I really liked the original game and played it a lot as a kid, but the remake just seems... stupid. Mind, I haven't played the remake, I just watched the movie that came out with it, and uh... Oh boy. That movie was effing terriblé. Ratchet is like some wide-eyed do-gooder wannabe action hero nerd, basically he's someone that the original Ratchet would have made fun of. TheGamingBrit has a great video comparing the two games though, good enough it makes me feel I don't need to play the remake because it sucks. Maybe not having played it invalidates my opinion, but I'm not going to buy a new console just to buy a game I know I'll hate.

I watched this video and started to play Insomniac's latest, Marvel's Spider-Man and...they do the exact same pointless health level up nonsense there. You go up in level and gain health upgrades so that you start at 100 and end at about 200, but it certainly seems like it makes no difference - I think it has to do with the enemies essentially going up with you, but jeez.

Perhaps if you actually PLAYED the entire original trilogy of Ratchet & Clank games (it also wouldn't hurt to play Ratchet: Deadlocked), you'd might understand why people talk about them so much. You come off as are extremely elitist in this review and quite frankly its obnoxious as hell. You keep dismissing people who really liked the older games and keep acting like the original games are somehow seriously inferior to Future trilogy, and yet you haven't played them. Play the whole serious before blatantly dismissing the games that the entire Future foundation sits on.

Thomas Ruth this video is pretty old, I don't remember much of what I said. What exactly did I say here because this sounds wrong? Unless you're talking about the story comparison to Ratchet 1?
@Thomas-te2lg7 жыл бұрын
That is one example, although there are plenty of others. Almost every occasion you bring up the original trilogy, it is almost always comes off as negative and dismissive. Which I'd would have slightly less issue with if you'd had actually played the original games, but you stated yourself you have little experience with them. Which makes no sense whatsoever, why be negative and dismissive towards the original trilogy if you haven't played them at all really?
@KingKlonoa7 жыл бұрын
But what were the things I said about it that were dismissive?
@Thomas-te2lg7 жыл бұрын
Well for one you keep saying "I don't know why everyone always talks about the original games" in a tone that reeks off "lol, nostalgia noobs, don't know what a good game is even if smacked them in the face", your comment on the music in TOD not needing to be "memorable" to be good smacks as yet another jab at the original games, you excessively complained about the graphics of the old games (they were good during their time, and they still hold up quite well today; also the HD collection port for PS3 you have is a tad bit notorious for some serious graphic errors that are not present in the original PS2 versions of games) and your utter dismal of past games storylines and character development was rather ignorant statement to make.

I apologize if I came off as harsh. Honestly I'm not sure I really knew what I was doing back when I made this lol. I'll take your word for it, because I don't have time to re-watch this, but I probably would agree with you.

This is my least favourite game from the R&C series. There are weapons wich becomes useless very fast; the boss battles are tedious and takes too much to kill ; the planets that you visit are boring and more linear than R&C 3; for some reason the game feels more childish than the ps2 games despite the story is more interesting.
@nathanlehto87807 жыл бұрын
Manzanito :3 really? I remember having that exact issue with 2&3. Which is why I fucking hate those games. Your weapons become useless after spending a lot of time building them up. And you start taking a shit ton of damage, only to find the last armor set is to fucking expensive,(same goes for the weapons in the game)
@manzanito36527 жыл бұрын
Nathan Lehto In those games I personally felt that some weapons are fucking useless,but others like the bouncer are too powerful. And yeah,once you pick best armor,the games become very easy. But I still prefer those games rather than Tod.

Playing the other 2 games you haven't played, are *far* superior than ToD. To explain why it isn't as talked about as much as ACiT or UYA, is because it's a lackluster game in the franchise. Going Commando and Up your Arsenal were fucking masterpieces of games, and with the amazing Spinoff known as Deadlocked, It'd be really hard to top that. Tools of Destruction has a lot of problems, such as motion controls, bullshit checkpoints, stretched out maps that go for way too long, and just overall feels bland. It has good moments, but for the most part was a giant disappointment because of how mediocre it is compared to the other games that soon came down the line, and have come before it. It feels cheap, boring, unimaginative, and the only reason WHY it's good is because of the world's most broken RYNO, the Omega RYNO 4-EVER if you had the bloody balls to play challenge mode. Personally, my start was on UYA and I soon got going commando, then Deadlocked, and I loved the entire franchise ever since. I hope that I can pick up the first game on PS2 for cheap. Do yourself a favor, play 2 and 3 since they're a lot better than the first game, and Tools of Destruction. I did *almost* beat going commando with standard armor, only giving up at *FUCKING SNIVELAK* and soon bought the 50% damage resistant armor. (in challenge mode, the enemies do double damage, so I guess I can happily say I beat R&C2 on standard armor mode?) (the worst Ratchet and Clank game has to be Size Matters, my god was that such a tedious bore to get through.)
@pelucheCR77 жыл бұрын
Mr. Blocky I'd say the first game was the best. Though I love going commando. I like UYA a lot too but you can tell the level design got lazy at the end.
@mr.blocky32747 жыл бұрын
Yeah, especially on Mylon and the Metropolis Re-tread. I think that for looks and how the PS2 can handle itself, first game hands down. I wish they added that same visual touch and detail from the first game all the way up to UYA, instead of cutting it short for Going commando. I've played and beaten it a couple times, and it isn't as graphically impressive as the first game. Surprisingly, UYA was my first game, and it got me sucked into Solana and Bogon. Still, I'd pick up the first one just solely as a finisher to the collection I have. Also I'd really want to pick up ACiT later on, 'specially with it's problems included. RYNO V being one of them. I didn't like that RYNO as much simply because of Accuracy being the deal breaker.

Mr. Blocky Mylon had a good boss though (kinda had the opposite thoughts on Yeedil) but yeah from Metropolis on the lack of creativity in level design becomes apparent with the exception of Aridia and Qwarks planet. I thought qwarks planet was one of the best in the series. I think the first game was the best in terms of integrating platforming and shooting. I also prefer the more defensive combat it had due to the limited movement and the story while simple was just engaging and the characters had development. I played ACT recently and it's very good, though I have my complaints.
@matthewmangan51614 жыл бұрын
Visually, the game looks good but the characters don’t look that great, the textureless models with early HD shading give an overly clean, cheap look, Ratchet just looks completely off, the duller and muddier look of the PS2 games worked better, but the PS4 designs were good
@Athesies4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the in depth criticism of this games models, i never got why so many people disliked them. Personally while i love the ps2 designs, i think the tools models are atleast more consistent. On the rare occasion the muddy ps2 models look just awful, like when ratchet sticks his tongue out in that sewer crystal cutscene or angela cross in this render www.google.com/search?q=angela+cross&client=ms-android-samsung-ss&prmd=inv&sxsrf=ALeKk02chOQhyY7T3pi5UPDbBNH0rdugSg:1604723543743&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiV_6WGze_sAhVm6XMBHbTCD-AQ_AUoAXoECAcQAg&biw=360&bih=612#imgrc=d67E-Tz4IVuv9M

And no matter how old these games get, both original and future, they will always be some of my most favorite Platform games of all time, it's even to a point where they highly influenced my own Game making endeavors as I want to join and be part of a team to make a 3D Platformer some day lol
