After diligently learning many different utility knots and applications over the past year, I've recently turned the corner into decorative work. I have made leather burnishers and knife handles from hawthorn and lilac wood They are hard, close grained and can be polished very smooth, so I think they would also be good for making fids and tool handles In fact lilac is so hard that it was used to make the teeth for garden rakes

Yes, lilac would work fine. Just be careful when drying from green, it cracks easily.

@@mikkosnellman Oh yes! I found that out for myself! The lilac I had split so much there weren't any pieces big enough or free of cracks to make even a whole knife handle. That's why I used it to make thin items like folders & burnishers; plus a few pieces that are just about thick enough at one end to make spacers for narrow tang knife blade handles One day I might make some lilac into a butter knife or a paper knife/letter opener So I work with what I have salvaged, and what it does do, it does well Hawthorn doesn't crack quite as much, and it has a lovely pattern of swirls in pale brown, tan, and caramel And thank you for explaining the difference between a fid and a marlin spike

Next time, when drying, put some beeswax on the end to prevent cracking.

Great question. If you have any examples of portable/ handheld rope making devices inside your ditty bags, that would be an intriguing topic to cover. My other thoughts would be tools that are less well known ( like serving mallets/ boards, bench hooks, etc.).
