I really like that hand flatter. I could see me needing that. I have a class with Alec in Canada Feb of 2017. Super excited about it.

Great work, Ethan! I'm in Calgary and pushing 40 and still working on my basic tool set. It's great to see a local folks, and especially young folks (which I still consider myself...) getting into this great craft!

I love that your making these hammers with Alec I wish you nothing but the best and we all know you will kill it...I mean you learned from the best...

As one of his first students you probably got the deal of a lifetime! I am sure if he ever offers that class again, esp one on one, the price will be astronomical. If I were you I would continue more classes with other teachers to see the differences. Please follow Alec's advice on hearing, eye, and body protection so that you can keep forging as you get older. Look forward to seeing your tools for sale.

Wow that is a lot of tools you made. Congrats on you effort and work.

Amazing that you made all of that in just 6 days. You must have been pooped! All the tools you ended up with are great. I think the special keepsake, or memoir, is the horse head, since it is quite unique and has Alec Steele's touchmark on it. I wish I had the money and the time to take a week long class from him too.

Hi Ethan, A great skill you have, know what you want in your minds eye, and then able to go through the steps to make the exact tool you need, as you grow in your smithing. I do not know the correct term, but did you fire-harden your wooden handles?
@EthanHarty8 жыл бұрын
helloyes, these handles are slightly charred. as far as I know how ever, the only thing it dose to the handles, is with use, the feel more rubbery and grippy! it also dry out the wood so it can absorb more oil. this can make the handles last longer.

Good on you. great age to start. you'll have loads of time to see if it will be a life-path, or a hobby. Then still have time to redirect you life-path if you choose smithing as a hobby interest. Honestly, I am a bit jealous, A Peter-Wright is way out of my budget, much less a power-hammer and long-belt grinder. Hope you get what you are looking for from the forge. Also, starting at 13 you should, if you take it seriously and get after it like Ethan, Alec and Liam Hoffman, you should get a fairly stout build and some decent muscles.
