I always carried my 624 with 3" barrel with Winchester silver tip 200grain, one hole groups at 7 yards. Seemed to be aluminum jacket with pure lead inside. Fired into water jugs they would expand to the point it wouldn't fit down a 12 gage barrel cylinder bore. Poor kid on a farm, made due with what I could do.

@@sirfrydryk360 I think the Silvertip would be good for your M624. It is now discontinued. Handloading would be a good way to get ammo for your 44 Special. You can get a Lee Loader and easily produce your own. I started out in 1972 with a lee Loader and it works great. Wont cost too much. Cast bullets will work great in your M624. I recently purchased a .44 special Charter Arms Bulldog from 1985 WITH SIGHTS. After watching you struggle with that Boomer, I'm glad I went with the sighted version. It's got a 3" barrel. I picked up a used Charter Bulldog 44 special way back in the middle 90's. It was an original with blued finish, wood grips and a 3" barrel. My wife already had a Taurus 38 snubbie, so I thought the 44 would be a great house and even carry revolver for her. I think I gave $150 for it. I grabbed a box of Winchester Silver tip hollow points to go with it. Well, it recoiled a bit more than I was expecting ! 😅. And I'm 225-6'. My 120 lb wife shot 2 shots through it, handed back to me, and let me know real quick I had made a terrible choice and She wouldn't be trading her 38 in for it. I kept it around for awhile and finally decided to trade it off because the ammo was much higher than any other ammo we used. I remember reading, years ago, in a review of the Bulldog 44 special- The reason the Son of Sam didn't shoot more people than he did, was because he had to soak his hands after every shooting. 😮

As a new defensive gun owner in the eighties, I bought a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug. Had 2.5” barrel and smooth wood grips that didn’t grab clothing (print) and dissipated the recoil over a wide area so quite manageable. I tried all the defensive loads at the time and found them poor. All were very slow - Winchester 200 grain Silvertips were about 630 ft/sec, the Gold Dot 200 was 720 or so. The Glaser safety slugs I didn’t measure but shot 8 inches low at 3 yards! Btw- all the lighter bullets impacted low. I ended up making handloads using 240 grain hardcast semi-wadcutter bullets at 900 ft/sec. Good point-of-impact and accuracy. Eventually the gun wasn’t reliable as I had stretched the frame from the steady diet of heavy loads, and cylinder endshake didn’t allow enough firing pin impact. I really liked that gun and bought another, but stopped carrying it in favor of a Glock 40 caliber…

I loaded up a bunch of them back in 1977 and 1978 and shot more than a few out of a 3" Charter Arms Bulldog of that era. The biggest difference was in the bullet in that the ones I loaded were 250grn LSWCHPs like Uncle Elmer suggested. AND THEY WERE HOT by anybody's .44Spl standards!!! I ended up firing the last hundred or so out of a Ruger Super Blackhawk.

@@ToolsandTargets I'm no Uncle Elmer but I think the .44Spl is the most overlooked and underappreciated revolver/carbine cartridge. It can be loaded to target levels all the way up to deer and hog hunting levels that can also be utilized for self-defense. I learned a long time ago that if it will drop an eatin' size deer or hog it'll put paid with interest on any two-legged attacker. Only the .38 Super gets less love and attention as a self-defense cartridge.

Hello Mr. Tools! I really appreciated this test and because of it I ordered2 boxes of MATT's Bullets, loaded 250 grain HP. Those are some BIG boy cavities, and the lead, according to Matt's (phone call) is soft lead. If I remember correctly he said about 10 bhn. I have also ordered some BHN 6-8 HBWC from BEAR CREEK SUPPLY, and will try them both forward and backward in the case at .44 Special velocities and pressures for EDC loads, and very quick follow up shots, if even needed. I agree with you, these MATT's over perform (ROWDY!), altho I haven't been able to set up my Chrono to check velocities, but they do feel ROWDY in my CA Pug (2.5") but are nice in my S&W M69 (2.75"). I use GRIZZLY Cowboy 200 Grain RNFP @ 700fps claimed velocity and 218 ft lbs energy. These are a real bargain price of less than $30.00 per 50. They shoot mild in the CA and are like "cotton ball" loads in the Smithy Combat Magnum. Perhaps you might do one of your excellent reports of this Grizzly ammo? If I were a rich man I would send you a couple of boxes, but at 70 years of age and on a smaller fixed income than when salaried, I cannot do so at this time. What I think would make a GREAT test might be comparing 3 or 4 different loadings of soft lead, HP and SWC or RNFP loads in the .44 special! I know the expense of Gel and ammo can be prohibitive perhaps, plus the time and energy spent to set up you SUPER Radar Range. I truly say a HEARTY THANK YOU for all you do to inform us of your well spoken testings! Remember the 3 G's of life, God, Guns, and Guitars! WDW44.

I always carried factory ammo in them, but today I use .44 special 125 grain Xtreme Defender OR 165 Grain FTX 44 spec Critical defense! I love the accuracy of FEDERAL 200 Grain SWCHP. If I could test it in Gel THAT might become the daily carry round. I have petitioned Buffalo Bore to load a .44 special HBWC, soft cast, or swedged, REVERSED in the case and called something like Powerful Defense Ammo at 800-850 fps from a 2.75" Model 69 S&W! If enough of us ask them for this loading we just might get it! I have personal knowledge of the effectiveness of .38 spec HBWC backwards in the case on human shootings, but am always CENSORED WHEN I POST THE DETAILS OF THE EVENTS! Will you join me in writing to Buffalo BORE about a 44 special HBWC reversed? Thanks everyone!

Bulldog (no hammer spur, so dbl action only) but thanks to your test I won't even try them in it. After I get to the range (indoor) I will try to let you know how the recoil felt like in the 37.2 ounce revolver. I carry GRIZZLEY Cartridge Co. 200 Grain RNFP at stated 700 fps 216 ft lbs energy. The lead is stated to be very soft, so I need to devise some kind of ballistic test medium to see if they go deep enough, or if deforming limits penetration. BUT as you say with the big ole .44 bullet you don't need a lot of expansion. 200 grn HBWC Loaded reversed with very soft lead most likely will be my choice for EDC soon as I get 'em loaded up!

I have , but not a Bulldog . As carry guns , a 4in M624 (.44 Spl only ) and as sub load in a 2.75in .44mag ( large frame) . Not starting a seperate debate , but I carry factory ammo for defensive . And the least worst was the Federal 200 gr all lead HP . It would have been a great load , if the velocity had been even vaguely close to the advertised 900 fps . But nope , it was under 800 fps . Tapered off from carrying these , because of the lack of decent factory loads . ( For trivia , in the 2.75 .44 mag , the 200gr .44 spl and 240gr .44mag hit to the same POI .) But I can see some of Matt's stuff in my future .

No, the .44 Mag is the magnum version of the .44 Special because the Special came first. :)

What's the purpose in the red ring brother?
@leonhart24524 ай бұрын
The red ring on the bullets is bullet lube. Lead bullets need lube.
@timjohnson83904 ай бұрын
@leonhart2452 Interesting thanks. What's it prevent from happening if not lubed?
@ToolsandTargets4 ай бұрын
It's grease to help lube the cast lead to help prevent lead build-up in your barrel. Don't need it on jacketed bullets because of the harder copper jacket. I have also heard a few folks mention it may help "seal" the gap and prevent gas leakage around the bullet.

Nice ammo. Thanks for the test. That first shot from the Boomer had me laughing. I wasn't expecting that either. I shoot Corbon 180 gr and it's one of my self defense loads. The other is Hornady 165 gr. (I believe ?) I got a hold of an old loading manual years ago. A guy used .30/40 Krag brass to make .44 Special and mag shot shells. Wellllll I had to make some tooling and turn the rim down on a lathe, cut and fire form, but ended up with some cool results. It uses .410 wads, trimmed for maximum shot capacity. Hold the shot in with a stamped cardboard piece, inserted and glued in place. After some shooting with it, got to playing around... during an SHTF situation where law for self defense might be more flexible, I can load 3 #000 Buck. Those baby's hold a 6" pattern to about 20'. Figured I'd mention that since I'm not only a .40 fan, but also a .44 guy. lol

I'm runnin' my cast 250K's in a 5.5" Ruger Bisley. Not a wussy load, but no sense blastin' my 44 Mags all the time when all I wanna do is hit somethin' inside of a 100 yards.

Wondered if muzzleblast from the ported Boomer might put a hole in the canopy. A whole Lotta shaking going on! Pretty good for lead projectile. I wonder how it would do reversed as a hollow base projectile. Possibly 4 to 5in more penetration? Hope these storms miss you later tonight. Ark building time. Stay safe. 🙏👍🇺🇸

@@kc0lif I shot my Father in Law's 44 magnum Astra years ago. The "Terminator" it is called. Before the movie lol. That model Astra is a collector gun now a days. Worth much more now than when it was new. I've got an old Astra 22 9 shot revolver. 4 inch barrel, adjustable sights. Made in 1965 I believe. I found it at a yard sale for $125- nice leather holster included.

I was expecting much better performance from the hollow point bullets. Maybe the hollow point was plugging up with the fabric and did not expand. A shot without the fabric in front of the gel could have made a difference. Hornady makes a Critical Defense load in 44 Special that uses a balistic cap on the hollow point bullet. A wide FP bullet could be interesting.

Good test, my friend! While a .44 sized hole in you is never a good thing, the truth is there's a very good reason why just about everyone gave up on lead hollow points. They just aren't that good! If you want good performance you need a jacketed hollow point such as the Speer 200 grain Gold Dot. If you can find them, that is! While the .44 is a decent caliber, I use the Speer bullets loaded into .44 Mag cases with a load of IMR4227 that produces 1200 fps with (surprisingly enough) no visible muzzle flash. Recoil is fairly mild and shots are easily controlled out of my 5.5" Ruger Redhawk. Certainly not a perfect CCW pistol, but it does work quite well. Of course, without being able to reload it's a moot point. I don't know of Speer loads the 200 in their ammo line but if so, it should make a decent SD/HD cartridge. Like wise, if Federal loads the HST in .44 Special, it too should be a good round. One round I know is available is the Underwood/Lehigh .44 Special using the Extreme Defender bullet, which would be my first choice. This should be another really good defensive round. Cheers, jc

The IMR in IMR4227 means Improved Military Rifle. It is flash suppressed. Full loads give just a mild orange flash in revolvers. IMR4227 also is easy on revolvers.

maybe a lighter bullet would need less powder and be more manageable bc a 44 sp is not supposed to be that snappy in a small gun. 200 grains is plenty imo. solid performer in a bigger frame however. still enjoy my charter arms target model w a 4 inch barrel. i shoot the hornaday critical defense 169? grain load and its pleasant to shoot.
