I have a feeling today’s generation of vinyl fans care about too many things too much. Back in the day people cared a lot less about any of this and yet I still have 60 year old records that sound great on an LP60.

I’ll be 75 next March. Have massive 45 collection from fifties and sixties. Have been playing them for sixty years on various turntables. Many sound as good as they did when I first bought them. Never once have I tinkered with the angle of a needle. Enjoy the music. The records are tougher than you think. At least the original ones are. And, while I’m here, one shouldn’t refer to the “grooveS” on one side of a record. There is only one groove; if there were more than one groove the needle would just play in a circle. It plays from beginning to end passing through one groove. Think about it. Terry Farmer

Michael H. I live in a college town in the Midwest. Retired history teacher. A few years ago I had a guy who has been in the high end stereo business since back in the seventies tell me about two young guys that came in and plunked down big bucks for a turntable, tuner, graphic equalizer, a high grade cartridge, etc. You get the picture. They came back three hours after the purchase complaining about getting no sound. Mike, the stereo salesman, had to tell them all of this stuff works so much better if you have some speakers. True story🤣. T. Farmer

@Attila Vago Say what you will, but I grew up in a middle-class house of philistines who never bothered with any concern for high-end anything. When I started to learn even the first smidge of all the science that goes into building even a basic setup of any gear, I resolved to never take that equipment for granted the way my family did. Excellence requires discipline and devotion and I intend to not be the schmucks my parents were.

I'm fairly new to vinyl and agree. About a quarter of my collection are records older than me and despite at least 40 years old and having the wear and tear you'd expect, they still play. Only one, an original pressing of the Shaft soundtrack, was unplayable but it was scratched to hell and back all over. "Shockingly," some weren't event stored in inner sleeves. I also find that they attract less static than newer ones as well. All that being said if we take care of things more on average then they'll last longer on average, but perhaps we care too much. Vinyl is stronger than we give it credit for despite its relatively high maintenance.

As an audio/visual engineer and a DJ of some 40 years, I find these problems occur far too often. I treat my work vinyl as I do my records at home. Yes at the beginning of work records there is cue noise but I take my own Technics head shells fitted with Shure cartridges with 2 spare stylii and my own slip mats because I want to know that what's above and below my vinyl is top notch. I own a brand new never been in a club Technics SL1200 MK2 fitted with an Ortofon cartridge properly weighted and calibrated with a protractor and the supplied white stylus guide to make sure the stylus tip is where it needs to be. I use a carbon fiber brush and a stylus brush and I never touch the playing surface of any of my records. In Summer, in a club I wash my hands every hour and have a damp clean cloth to wipe the sweat of of my face to avoid it landing on the records as they play. Over the top? Yep but there is nothing worse than hearing scratches on records that you cannot replace or having a record skip because the stylus is fouled with dirt. I treat my CDs the same way. You get out of your software what you put into it. My collection is worth a fortune because I look after them. Cheers from Australia, Andrew.

When I was a kid, I had a portable record player that would scratch my records. I learned later on that the record player was mono and that a mono needle is wider than a stereo needle. That explained why my stereo records were being damaged on my mono record player.

Great catch. Long term it would be bad, but I doubt you hurt your records if the stylus was only bent for a short time. As I always say, records are tougher than you'd think. They're also more delicate than you'd think, haha. It's also important to remember that tracking is not consistent across the side. Those cartridge alignments we use are compromises. Same with anti-skate settings. I think linear-tracking turntables are the only ones that track consistently start to finish, and even then, usually only in theory "when the stars all align."

In regards to TT setup: In March '24, I bought my Rega P6 with a Hana ML cart. The cart is $1,500. The tech at Audio Advice setup the TT in the shop and then I put it in my car and drove 65 miles back home. I swear, I was so petrified that the ride in the car shook or jolted something out of proper alignment. All I could think of was wishing we had access to a good transporter from Star Trek to make that move to the house! LOL!

I always cue my records by looking at the stylus (always using the cueing lever). Especially when starting from the beginning of a record, I know for sure it won't fall off the edge. In looking at the way the cantilever is bent, my guess is you may have accidently dropped the tone arm on the record while trying to cue (or remove) the tone arm. It wasn't clear in the video but did you check the alignment of the new cartridge on an alignment protractor to make sure it was properly aligned? Thanks for sharing your lesson(s) learned, so that others will learn as well!
@TooManyRecords
@TooManyRecords 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, all aligned. Thankfully, due to the way the cartridge screws on with the CC, there's almost no way to misalign.
@JS-wi9mw
@JS-wi9mw 3 жыл бұрын
its great to be aware if you are using worn out or improperly mounted styli on your turntable so kudos for the heads up video! i've found the main issue that causes most damage from misaligned or bent styli is when there is a distinct lateral upward or downward tilt so that the tip of the styli would effectively be coming down onto the records at a wonky angle...when you see this you can expect to have sustained damage to your vinyl. but honestly having your styli pointing slightly to left or right really only means the tracking force is pressing against one side of the groove wall more robustly than the other. thankfully since as all styli nowadays are eliptical/conical the sound will often not be affected nor will the grooves all that much (though it is certainly not ideal to play your vinyl like this over a long period!) not taking anything away from the caution shown in this video, but more often than not one can simply just manually shift the styli back into alignment with no great damage caused.

I had an Ebay seller try to pass a Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood cartridge off on me last month with a cantilever so bent the sh*t was noticeable before you even removed the cartridge from it's packaging. After I called him out on it, his exact response was "It's 100% functional. It's fine." You can't even properly align the thing....but it's all 100% functional & fine. This cartridge was included w/ a Marantz TT-15s1 btw. That seller got his 100% functional & just fine cartridge AND turntable back. ppl are so trashy

I started collecting in 2006 . Around 2008 I fell out of love with it till this year . I'm a 40 year old construction worker and I have lost my gentle touch in recent years . It wasn't an hour in to listening to records I destroyed my needle by not pay attention . But to be honest , I'm getting too stressed about vinyl . If I hear a pop from a record I bought on ebay , I send it back . Too many resellers now that don't test their product but price the vinyl as tested . I miss the good ole days on ebay when you would get a chart of the imperfections and they would under grade the vinyl even though the record is better . A VG would be a NM .

I check my styluses every few weeks for wear under a 50x Microscope. You can tell right away if the diamond is worn or damaged in any way. They typically only last 500 to 1000 hours anyway, so if you play a lot of records that means you should expect to replace them on average every other year regardless of alignment.
@leon9021

For the average user 500 hours is about a year so 1000 hours is indeed 2 years. Although if you play a lot of records maybe sooner is better.

Biggest mistake I've made isn't so much an immediate damage thing as much as something that increases wear over time. I have no outer protective sleeves on any of my records, nor have I replaced the inner sleeves to minimise damage on the wax themselves. I wish I'd known that you should do this at the start of collecting, as I'm now $00+ records deep, which makes this an expensive (though I'm sure worthwhile) investment. I've seen Matt's recommended outer and inner sleeves above, and, were I in the US, would have no trouble picking them up - I trust his recommendations. But I'm in the UK and try to avoid buying anything on Amazon at all costs, so if any UK subs have any recommendations for quality inner and outer sleeve protectors, that'd be grand!
@mercurialmagictrees
@mercurialmagictrees 4 жыл бұрын
That's understandable. I don't mind some wear on older jackets and sleeves it represents the authenticity and the amount time it's been enjoyed. However I do try to keep the condition vg+ and higher as much as I can.

Just to be clear, that cantilever was not "a little bit bent" my friend. That was a major bend. Secondly, unless you had a slip of the finger where you literally "bent" the assembly yourself with a single incident, it is quite possible that this damage is due to a poorly setup anti-skate mechanism. Sadly few people know how to set that up and end up applying either too little, or like in your case with the cantilever bent to the right, too much anti-skate. So you can in theory end up with a bent cantilever over time. I do note this is now a three year old video so hopefully this bent cantilever situation was not a recurring problem - because if it happened again, BINGO. You need less anti-skate applied. Cheers! Simple solution - don't play your best records on your most expensive turntable when drunk or stoned. Never trust anyone else, not even closest friends or family, to touch your records or equipment. No parties ever in your home, unless you can lock all entries to your listening room. Never let cats and dogs anywhere near your records and HiFi. This is valuable advice learned from expeience - I was a teenager in the 1970s... Case examples: The burn marks on old LP sleeves are a result of their use as joint rolling tables. If it looks like dried crusty semen fingerprints on old 2nd hand vinyl or sleeves, it probably is [LP's needed to be flpped over to the B side, or another disc put on during lenthy student sex sessions Steve Hillage LPs were excellent for this purpose] My sisters dog destroyed the bass cones in my dad's speakers. The drummer in my band pissed on my dad's records. I puked on one of my bass player's dad's speakers. .. and that's just what I can still remember from all those decades ago..

A bent stylus just like this was the reason I switched cartridges for the first time. I could’ve just replaced the stylus but I wanted to try something diff and had a decent TLE Pickering in a box. Loved it compared to the old one...amazed what a diff it made and I’m now eagerly awaiting my next upgrade to arrive- a NAGAOKA MP-110 w/elliptical stylus (my first- I’ve only used conical) which I’ve heard should really make a big difference! I have the same cartridge. It costs $850 new but now to replace it costs over $1100. I sent it to a guy in NY. This happened during the first big wave of covid and he was sick so I had to wait 6 weeks to get it back. So in the mean time I purchased a popular cart in the VC. The Ortofon Blue. The Blue was several steps backward in sound quality from what I was used to. When I got my Clear Audio cart back from Sound Design I put it on and played my favorite test record and was shock that it sounded better than new. Way better! He upgraded my canteliver to Sapphire and a different shape of diamond tip. More bass. More sound stage depth. better highs. Best part of the whole experience is that it cost about $300. Dude if you still have that old bent cart send it in to get fixed.

This just actually happened to me recently. I got to see it live. I was taking a 45 off of the table and my wrist bumped into the tone arm. Could the issue be that your anti-skate is set too high? Maybe too much pressure outward on the cartridge body, which would angle the cantilever inward.. Over a long period of time maybe it bent it? I don't know. Just a thought. That was a pretty aggressive angle, so maybe that's not even possible. But if it were me, I'd probably try and confirm my anti-skate is set correctly.

Crosleys are not really anything that a Vinyl collector should buy. Any "player" with that same cheap plastic turntable and red cartridge is a piece of crap. I see them everywhere from episodes of Fixer Upper to popular movies and commercials and it makes me crazy.

I bought The Kinks Muswell Hillbillies RSD deluxe edition several years ago. The whole in the second LP was to tight to get on the spindle, so I used a very small pocket knife to try to enlarge the hole. It jumped out of the hole and put a gouge across the entire side of the album. I don't think it was cheap, either.

make sure you don't have your anti skating set too high. it pulls your tonearm to the left and will cause your stylus in turn to pull to far the to right. if it is too high you will get this issue. make sure you set it properly or it will happen to your next stylus swell. I pasted some links above to show how to do this so this won't happen.

you keep saying the stylus was bent... the centiliver was bent... the stylus is actually the little tip.. it happened to me too!!! I had a brand new SEALED replacement stylus for my audio techinca at 12 with the centiliver been a little bit bent to the left ( opposite side of yours ).. the only bad thing with this is that even if myt cartridge has a square body/edges and should be easy to allign with a protractor i have to practicaly allign the stylus because itself is not alligned with the cartridge.. after all it all sounds great, tracks great and doesnt skip anything, even difficult to track records ( i have 2 of them ) that some of my other cartridges skip in two or three spots!

I am surprised you don’t know much about cartridges, alignment, settings. That’s essential to vinyl playback. Otherwise what is the difference from a Crosley? I am glad you are honest and still make a video of it and let people realize the importance. I would be embarrassed to do that myself.

I had this happen to me on a Rega turntable where the anti skate was set too high. Overtime the needle gradually started bending inwards because of the excessive force while playing . Just make sure it doesn’t happen to you again ;)
@richardsinger01
@richardsinger01 4 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t setting the antiskate too high or low just means the stylus skips? I am surprised that the antiskate could distort the cantilever suspension to this extent, even over time. When the antiskate is set very high on my tone arm (a Rega) it pulls the arm outwards when I lower the cueing lever. I usually set it at about 0.75 g which sounds ok and minimises this effect.

Swap your cartridges every couple months with a different make/model. You'll be surprised how different they will sound. I have about 50 or so and swap between 2 turntables. Old Empire and Stantons are my favorite. Expensive carts don't always sound better. The type of music often changes stylus needs.

Looks like too much anti-skate, that over time will distort the rubber suspension of the cartridge and make point in that direction. So essentially only playing one side of the groove and wearing one side of the stylus. Research anti-skating force.
