Watsky has always been an exceptionally open artist when it comes to thoughts of mortality and he actually has epilepsy so he has songs specifically about his own struggle with that and he's written a book where he talks about how he thinks about death a lot because people don't think of epilepsy as something that will kill you but he'll be floating in a lake alone considering that if he did have a seizure in that moment he wouldn't be able to survive so he's really had to think if his own morality for a LONG time. One of his really early songs Seizure Boy deals with his condition and fucking SLAPS highly recommend

yo, this is a great analysis. Love that you do deep dives on the meaning of lyrics. not a lot of reactions do that. One thing I will say though, the final verse ("When you tie your stomach into knots that you don't know how to undo/But do you ever have another moment after that, when you can see/There's no one way this has to be?"), I don't think it means what you took from it. You talk about how it's about controlling your reaction, seeing that it's just the present, but I think it's more that there is no such thing as the "perfect life," that we have to get away from thinking there's something perfect we have to strive for. But you know, both readings could be right too, that's one of the reasons Watsky is such a genius. It means different things for different people, and more often than not, it's what we need to hear right now. That's art

I have as well. It was close to 10 years ago I was listening to a music app and heard "Tiny Glowing Screens Part 1" and was instantly hooked. I went down the Watsky rabbit hole and have been a huge fan ever since. He can literally do any kind of rap he wants to but he excells at story telling. I think the term "slept on" is over used and I try to refrain from using it but it fits perfectly with Watsky.

This was beautiful. You said we can decide how to feel, happy or sad. But it's not always that simple. People with mental illness can ask themselves questions at an alarming fast rate and are unable to shut it off. In my experience, I can't quiet my mind. I don't have the ability to choose to be happy. I'm always sad. That's part of depression and anxiety. Just wanted to add a different perspective.
@stephensemp8634
@stephensemp8634 3 жыл бұрын
Balancing/Changing/Managing (not controlling) our internal world is never simple; or it might be simple, but not easy. I appreciate you speaking for people who struggle with the chemical and environmental deficiencies that manifest as what is termed ‘mental illness.’ The struggle is real. Nonetheless, I encourage that we all strive toward Hope in Self (‘God’ if that more appeases your sensibilities), if only for the fact that no one, not doctors or chemicals, nor family or friends - no one can tell you what you are. The idea of resigning one’s internal state to uncontrollable emotions is as problematic as resigning our external freedoms to the dominant power structures of the day. This is why it’s an issue addressed by conventional medical science. Conventional science wants to fix broken things. And while feeling ‘broken’ is a real feeling, it is not a permanent state of being.
@melissadean6874
@melissadean6874 3 жыл бұрын
@@stephensemp8634 Of course striving is important. Medication, therapy, the push to get up each day and stay on this planet is all hard work. I just wanted to give an alternative perspective on what it's like for some people. I don't disagree with you. We have to want to get "better". It's just not always a simple thing.
