A dental abscess or phlegmon is the collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection and that can occur for various reasons, such as due to untreated cavities or a periodontal problem. Symptoms include severe pain, fever, swelling, inflammation etc. If an abscess is not treated, it can cause the infection to spread, or cause a fistula, through which pus drains out.
Symptoms of tooth abscess:
These are the symptoms that often accompany a dental abscess:
- Toothache.
- Tooth sensitivity.
- Inflammation of the area.
- Redness in the gums.
- Bad taste in the mouth and halitosis.
- Fever
Any of these symptoms can show the existence of dental phlegmon. Detecting it early and going to the dentist as soon as possible can help control its progress and, thereby, minimize the pain and destruction of tissues that dental abscess can cause in patients.

A drain consists of creating a small access through the tissues to allow the pus to escape to the outside. In cases where the pulp is affected, it may be necessary to have a root canal treatment done to resolve the infection. In cases where the infection persists despite having performed the root canal, it may be necessary to perform an apicoectomy or remove the tooth, depending on the case.

These are things that worked for me while I was in pain 1.warm saltwater 2. Ibuprofen (sometimes) 3. Orajel and other numbing ointments 4. Ice 5. Do not lay down flat sleep with your head elevated 6. Gargle the infected area with hydrogen peroxide as this will help with popping by the abscess after the tooth abscess has popped you will fill INSTANT RELIEF However none of these are permanent solutions you need antibiotics like amoxicillin and you must have the tooth pulled or a root canal or some form of dental work done if you are reading this and are in pain I wish you the best I know how much it hurts

Thanks. Have the same condition. Tried all the above to bring down the swelling. The dentist won't perform the root canal without the swelling going down. After sometimes the pain subsides as the nerve no longer hurts.

I just went to the dentist and they popped mine and did my root canal. When I tell you the pain was excruciating. Plz if you have a tooth abscess and a rotten tooth get it fix asap! My whole face ended up swelling in a matter of 27hrs and i felt like my brain was on fire. All I could do was lay in bed and literally scream cry. My dentist was amazing and she was able to get all the pus out (they gave me painkillers and antibiotics) and I seriously feel 10 times better. I will definitely be taking better care of my teeth now and in the future. But definitely don’t wait, especially if it’s an abscess. The infection could get into your bloodstream and go to your heart or brain and kill you

I am so scared of going this Tuesday. The pain is so unbearable i can't even imagine what this is going to feel like. My hands have been shaking all day. I'm about 5 days into the swelling and for the last 48hrs it's gotten much worse. I had a cavity in between 2 upper teeth. The 2 teeth broke in the middle and I'm pretty sure the abscess is located in between the 2 teeth. I finally was able to schedule an emergency appointment on the 19th. On a Friday evening after my dentist closed for the day I noticed an abscess. Called the dentist and left a voicemail message for them to call me first thing Monday morning. The dentist did call me the first thing that Monday morning and told me to come in tomorrow which was a Tuesday. Until this point, I was in no pain at all in regard to having a tooth abscess I felt nothing. She ended up giving me a script for some antibiotics and setup an appointment to remove the infected tooth was no saving it and give time for the antibiotics to work. At this point, I have been taking the antibiotics for 2 days and now all sudden in the early morning hours I'm in constant pain that's driving me up the wall. Called the dentist as soon they opened up and was lucky to get an opening for that day 1 hour before they close for the day. They gave me 3 shots to numb me up two of them did not hurt much at all. The 3rd numb shot hurt like a mother blank she claimed that was cause it was where the abscess is located. Even though I was numbed up during the tooth extraction it still hurt like a mother blank. I just took the pain while I breathed very heavily out of my nose. After the tooth extraction was done I went straight home and took 3 hour nap. When I woke up from my nap I was no longer in pain either from the abscess it self OR from having the tooth extracted. I love my dentist she is awesome I have been going to her for like 2 decades.

I got a cavity following that a bump was formed near the tooth. I got my root canal done and now on antibiotics but the bump didn’t go away and I don’t feel any pain. I am experiancing same situation in front teeth that was hit by a bottle 2 month ago and after 2 month there is a swelling and a pus abscess but I didn't experience any pain alhamdulillah I go to dentist, they drain the pus and perform a RCT on front teeth and gave me 3 days antibiotics they open the canal and put injection for pus to dry the pus completely and I have to go to the clinic after 7 days to complete fill the RCT with permanent laser filling no need of crown as it was my front teeth and remaining structure was enough now I am experiancing no pain nothing you have to go to clinic to fully eliminate the infection home remedies was temporary and give short time relief 😊🙂

When the tooth started hurting I took some - NyQuil - and did not feel anymore pain. Got some good sleep. 😴 I drained the 1st abcess I had on 1 tooth & took antibiotics. The abcess came back bigger and more difficult. Going to the dentist this time for drainage and antibiotics. Getting the tooth removed. @@aandjay I had a root canal several years ago. Hadnt been to a dentist in a long time cause of CoVid scare and when I went in had a fistula below lower back molar (one with root canal). Apparently bacteria got below tooth and ate out some of the jaw bone. Had tooth pulled and I can finally sleep and feel normal again. Since there was no nerve there cause of root canal I never knew anything was wrong other than getting terrible sleep and waking up with soaked sheets. My infected cavity doesn't hurt. It just bothers me every now and then. I do know I have one because can detect the order that comes from it and I can taste it. I had this, it was leaking puss and blood every 2 days, fixed it by storing listerine in my mouth for 15 minutes right after a fresh wound. used listerine twice every day and pushed at my tooth absess with listerine in my mouth so puss would come out and negative pressure would suck listerine into the wound. has been a month and no more tooth absenss. there is still a cavity under my tooth filling thou. I tried salt water, needle to drain absenss, which was not permanent , only reduced absenss size for 2 days.

Hello i hope you can notice this Last night i had my gums swollen (the other side of my gums not the outer part) and i accidentally popped it with my tongue, it didn't really totally popped but the pus is leaking and so i rinsed it with warm saltwater for like an hour since it continues to leak in which i decided to gently help it with my tongue so it can release more. (I don't drink nor smoke.) After that the swelling was gone but the pus keeps on coming back every hour or so as if it has not drained fully so it leaks again, i still can't make a dentist appointment since we had a lockdown in our city until the end of the month. HELP 🥺🥺🥺 Hi, I just finished braces and on my retainers. I discovered a bump like abscess in my front upper teeth, it's not painful at all but kind of irritating if you press the bump. Can I just take antibiotics? because I don't want to fix my front teeth that might affect my retainers which are so so expensive :((

I went to dentist today writhing in agony from a large periacipal abscess (tip of tooth root infection) , had to wait 3 painful days though before and heres how i coped. 1. Listerine advanced gum treatment mouth wash (cap full) 2. Jack daniels whisky (use listerine cap to measure) 3. Clove oil (only use 1-2 drops at a time) 4. Orajel extra strength (about half a vial) (buy over counter) 5. Euthymol toothpaste (teaspoon) 6. Sensodyne repair and protect toothpaste (teaspoon) 7. Salt (tablespoon) 8. Three tablespoons of fucking cold water - now after putting all those things into a cup , mixing them up and doing a mouthwash kinda swish or gargle ....all i can say is that it worked and took practically all tge pain away and numbed the fuck out of my mouth for a good 10 minutes each time .... until another swish was needed.(when you have abscess pain you realise that 10 minutes without that specific pain is like heaven on earth) I now call this the ultimate toothache cocktail. Only a temp fix though till i got to dentist who did a root canal and took the majority of my pain away . Dentist is way forward in this situation every single time.

If God forbid this were to happen again I would say to just leave out the whiskey. The main ingredients in this mixture is the salt, Clove oil and Orajell. The salt kills bacteria and draws puss out of the infection and the Clove oil and Orajell are great for numbing. I'm sure whiskey is anti bacterial also but I would be concerned about the dry mouth.

I had a tooth abscess before, and it can be life threatening if not cured. Go to your dentist. It may spread eventually

my toothaches when I do push ups, eating candies, drinking hot coffee. And if I don't drink pain reliever, that's when abscess can form when it hurts. That's the origin of abscess as far as I know. You must avoid foods and activities or temperature that can cause toothaches to avoid pain that leads to abscess and fistula even more.

I had a root canal treatment done 2 days ago. But I still have the dental abscess on my gum above. Im not sure if it should have went instantly or if it takes time to heal and time for the abscess to go away

@@marco7838 abscess takes time to heal. Don't pressure it. Avoid exercises first and hot drinks. Brush your teeth slowly.

@@marco7838 if you have abscess don't do exercises. It will get worse. Not only that, I only get tooth abscess days after i do push up and drink coffee. But I get it from drinking hot coffee. But if you have tooth abscess now, avoid lifting like going to gym.

If you have an abscess, go see a dentist. It means there’s an infection. You might need to do an apicoectomy or extraction.

Recently I have a pimple/cyst that is right in between 2 of my bottom teeth. It isn't the middle bottom teeth but a bit to the right. When I brush the area, it bleeds. But if I don't brush it, there isn't any pain at all. Now if I move my tongue around to feel it, there isn't any pain at all... maybe a little discomfort. Is this a peridontal abscess 100%? The thing is there are very few pictures I found online that show it right between two bottom teeth... most of it is either above or below the teeth. Is this gingival abscess then? I use listerine mouthwash on it in the meantime. But do you need to see a dentist real soon for this or not? Also what would they do to it? Do you always have to either get the tooth remove or a root canal? Or could they drain it or deep clean it or give it antibiotics and that would fix it? Planning to also get deep cleaning done on my teeth as I haven't done in years.

You should visit a dentist to check the origin of the problem. They may take a CBCT scan and then depending on the origin, extension, location etc they will tell you the possible solution.

I have a question. I had a tooth abscess the size of a nickel a day after my root canal. I used the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda treatment before going to bed. This morning it was completely gone!! Now, my question is, were did all the pus go? It was the size of a nickel!!! I'm hoping I didn't swallow it while I was sleeping. I'm sure if I swallowed it I would have woken up with a horrible taste in my mouth but I didn't. So can anyone explain were did all the pus go?

For anyone experiencing you should call your dentist to get antibiotics. To manage the pain heres what I reccomend. 1. Do a warm saltwater rinse, 1tsp salt to 1 cup warm water. This can be done up to 4 times a day. 2. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen 3. Clove Oil and Orajell on the site of the tooth abcess. 4. Brush your teeth 3 times a day instead of 2 and floss once a day.

This is the worst, im not feeling any pain yet but i’ve had this abcess for a while now i’m scared to tell my parents because we are low on money and might not be able to pay for a treatment. If i push on it a little pus leaks out but it comes back after 20 minutes and i can tell it is not fully drained… i’m really scared
