used to have an open bite (5mm) and most orthodontists had suggested extractions since I couldn't afford surgery. So I opted for a camouflage technique instead, osseous genioplasty to fix my protruding chin, 4 premolar extractions (wisdom teeth had already been extracted), lingual braces with tads for 2 years. I now have wire attachments behind my front teeth and wear a retainer for 12 hours a day and a tongue crib to better help me position my tongue. It has been worth it.

@@agebukahsay9772 heyy no it doesn't hurt. You just feel a lot of pressure and tbh, it depends on how strong your gum and teeth are. If they are too strong, it might take more time and you'll feel more pressure but that's rare. Just follow all the instructions the doctor give : do not spit or brush or rinse your mouth and eat ice cream and cold stuff and soft food for 24 hours, if you feel any bleeding, don't care and please don't poke your tongue there!! After those 24 hours, rinse your mouth with saline water 4-5 times a day (it really helps with some after pain and quick healing)

@@agebukahsay9772 nope didn’t hurt at all! they put me to sleep using IV anesthesia so it was quick! The day after getting them extracted was fine, no severe pain I was able to talk normally and eat just fine

Getting extractions is not too big of deal. You can get numb and the teeth come out relatively easily. About 20% of our patients need extractions for braces and they all do great and are happy when the treatment is over and they have beautiful smiles! 😁

Hi! You’re the first person I’ve seen who answers comments 😊 thanks for the informative video! Was wondering if you think lower canine removal is a good idea in general? (My case is it’s severely impacted from a broken jaw) We are planning to do this on my case and close the gap with my orthodontist who says he can do this. My surgeons agree. Just seems really weird removing a front kinda tooth 😭 but seen a few other videos on it. Bottom teeth are overcrowded hence the room to do this.

If you have had a jaw fracture and the canine won’t grow in on its own this might be the best option. Your doctor and surgeon would be able to say for sure. Your doctor should be able to close the gap and give you a great result. Canine extraction isn’t usually our first option for orthodontic treatment, but when there are other factors involved (such as a history of fracture or a tooth impaction) then having a canine extracted can be a good choice. @@nataliamiesniak3047 actually when the anaesthesia gets injected it’s pretty uncomfortable and tastes bad but other than that nothing hurts , even after that ( provided you take painkillers ) but half your face will droop and you can’t gargle lol

About 20% of all orthodontic patients have extractions and don’t have any negative side effects. There’s been lots of studies in this topic and when extractions are indicated there is no long term negative effects.

Just had 2 teeth extracted and 2 more are on the way. The pain very little to nothing and it only shows the first few days. I think the emotional part is stronger. I dont know how i will be able to chew and eat normally without 4 of my teeth-hopefully the braces would work fast. Its a big process guys-think it through. I personally had severe overbite and didn’t have any other choice,but if you dont have such a big problem-i wouldn’t hurry. But thats my personal opinion of course

If you have too much crowding to fit all your teeth in then having teeth extracted will actually improve your profile. Orthodontists take all these factors into account when recommending treatment and they are very aware of what happens to the facial profile if teeth are removed.

Having teeth extracted generally doesn't affect sleep or snoring. Most sleep/snoring problems are due to tonsil and adenoid size, fat distribution around the neck, narrow nasal passages, etc. If someone has a very narrow upper arch this is something that can affect the airway. Having an expander will help with this and is something that orthodontists can help treat.

I can’t seem to find a clear answer online and my dentist was a bit vague when I asked about the issue, but here’s my situation/question. I just turned 50 and decided to finally get braces to correct crowding issues. After having my braces fitted, I was told I needed to have three teeth extracted. I’ve got the extraction appointment coming up in a few weeks, but my dentist said I would need to have bone grafts done during the extraction, I was under the impression bone grafts would be necessary for future dental implants only. Orthodontists like teeth, so if your doctor recommended getting a tooth extracted then they must have a good reason for it. Getting extractions for braces is very common and its not something to be nervous about. Your doctor has your best interest at heart and I would trust their advice :)

@@anmol374 hey anmol! I am 21, I got my braces 1 month before and i reserched the whole internet also i wanted to get ceramic braces but i got the traditional metal ones. I am very self concious person i have thought about getting braces for amost 4 years and now because of pandemic i thought this would be the perfect timing to get them as only my close ones will notice the braces and after a while they won’t even notice my braces. Actually i think they are very cute. I assume that you are asian and probably eat food with turmeric in it. Ceramic braces may cause staining on braces. Also traditional ones is more cost effective than ceramic ones, they both does the same thing and its better to look at the bigger picture right?

I have 2 options for my teeth, one is that I wait until I am 17 so my growth can stop, the reason they are gonna do this is because if I get my braces and then I get them removed and all there is a chance when I am an adult my teeth will go back to the way they were before. The second option is to get them now (or in a month after I take off my expanders) and get 4 teeth pulled out, one on each side of the top one and 1 on each side of the bottom row and then get braces. My teeth are really crooked but I don’t really know what to do. I might get them now…? 😭

All the spaces are closed and the front teeth are retracted a bit and the back teeth are pulled forward The total arch length is reduced a bit but that reduction in length comes from the gaps closing and the back teeth moving forward . Hope that makes sense 👍

2 days ago I extracted my first molar on right lower jaw the last one on the end and damn I was so traumatized it was not a painfull process the amesthetics did its job but its just stresfull for me having it pulled out I almost fainted. Hello, I had to have a root canal treatment and was told that there’s no saving my premolar so at some point it will hurt and I will have to get it removed. I am now thinking to get Invisalign instead of getting a bridge but does this mean I will have to have another 3 teeth removed for my bite/teeth/midline to be aligned? How important is the top and bottom midline to be aligned - will this cause problems in the future if not? ❤️ from the UK

No,they arent performed on the same day as the extracted portion needs time for healing.It takes about a month

hello doc, got braces today and orthodontist suggested extracting 4 teeth out when i don't have any over crowding.. i have crossbite on right side where the smile is slightly asymmetrical compared to left side. the two teeth just slightly sticks outside in the front (not very noticable). My teeth were removed when i was a child by the dentist in the upper back on both side and put 3 attached artificial teeth on both side upper teeth. I don't understand why 4 more extration is needed? could you explain

We move the teeth back usually by using a series of different wires that help position the teeth where we need them and we use power chain to close spaces which slides the teeth closer together. Power Chain is like an elastic link chain that connects to each and every tooth to pull them together and close any remaining spaces. Hope this helps!

Doctor, i got barces in 2017 because my teeth is crowding and my orthodontist pulled out 1 teeth from my left upper teeth and now all my teeth move to the left side even my centre teeth is not in the left place when I asked her about the misplacing she said that it's need to be done to fill the space.... But now after 3yrs I still had my braces on and because my teeth moved to the left side my facial features have even changed...and I realy hope you can answer

My son has an underbite and he’s 11 1/2 years old. I went to 2 Orthodontists for consultation. 1 said his is not severe so does that mean there is no need for tooth extraction? The 1st Orthodontist said need 2 bottom teeth extracts (when they grow out) to improve the profile even after wearing the face gear and it does push top out. He also said might pull 2 top but will have to see progress later. But the 2nd orthodontist didn’t say need tooth extraction, he just say we try to push out the top first and see the progress and can determine if need to pull the teeth out. I prefer my son not to have tooth extraction. I signed a contract with the first ortho (1k cheaper) then went home and keep worry about the tooth extraction plan. Should I cancel and go with the other ortho? I keep wonder if this could be prevented if I go with the 2nd ortho and see if need to pull out teeth. I will have to pay a cancellation fees.

Both great plans will probably work and will give you a great result. There are lots of different ways to treat the same bite and if you go to different doctors they will likely have different treatment plans. I know it’s sometimes confusing when there are different plans, but every doctor does things a bit differently, but most of the time all the different methods of treatment work well.

Unfortunately teeth move at the rate that they choose. There’s not much that can speed up tooth movement, unless you’re willing to get some gum surgery which can speed things up. Most of the time you just have to be patient and trust that the spaces will close and it will be worth the time invested!

Palatial expanders are usually only effective in younger children. Also, they usually are not effective in corrective severe crowding since the expander can widen the upper arch but the lower arch can not be expanded. Extractions may be your best option. We extract teeth on about 20% of patients and it’s not too big of deal. We understand it may make you nervous but if your orthodontist recommends extractions then it is likely the best option. Before getting a tooth extracted you will get numb, and it shouldn't be too bad. You'll fit a little bit of pressure during the procedure, but you shouldn't feel any pain. The procedure only lasts for a few minutes and it will be over before you know it 👍

Lots of celebrities and famous people have had teeth extracted for braces and still have beautiful smiles and no flat faces :) If you have severe crowding or a major bite issue then teeth extractions should improve your profile and shouldn't have any negative affects on your face.

Im commenting with so much desperation. Hopefully you see this sir. After doing a lot research, I think my premolars are extracted unnecessarily. 😭 I have a good bite on the right but class 2 malocclusion on the left (not severe) and mid line is a bit off. My upper front teeth have 3-4mm overjet/overbite (sry i dont know the exact term). My teeth are not crowded either. I have narrow ovoid arch form. Im already into 4 months of my brace journey. I decided to have braces bcos i thought i have overjet/overbite. My ortho extracted my upper premolars jus bcos i have no room without warning the effect of extraction of premolars and i believed him. Now im stressing out everyday after reading effects of premolar extraction and this is killing my mental health !!!! Extraction of lower premolars haven't done yet but soon cos i insisted to postpone it if possible. Im 23, have small & slim face and small chin. Did my case really need extraction or did my ortho decide so carelessly?? (Im starting to doubt his treatment cos he didnt even know my mid line is off until i told him.) All i wanted is to fix my front teeth a bit but i felt like it is all messed up now. HELP i guess i still have time to change ortho or go for another treatment plan 😭

We extract teeth on about 20% of our patients. It’s often a necessary procedure and it’s very common. If you have crowding or an overbite both of these are indications that extractions may be needed. As far as your specific case we couldn’t really say what the best treatment plan is, but orthodontists don’t extract teeth unless they feel it is necessary and beneficial. Once the extraction spaces are closed it’s likely that no one will be able to tell that you had teeth extracted and you will probably get a beautiful result and a great smile. I would suggest asking your doctor specifics about your treatment as they likely had a good reason for prescribing the treatment. Hope this helps and good luck 👍

@@Devni2002 How many months are u in? My appointments delayed due to covid for two months already. And i haven't done lower premolars extractions x') Basically, nth much has done yet. Ive been stressing out everyday almost half a year gosh. Btw i went to other consultations during past months. They didnt comment much about my reckless extractions but they said my case could be done with IPR or wisdom teeth removal as other options (which my ortho didnt at all). Two were totally against my extractions and told me to avoid lower premolars extraditions no matter what if i do not want to ruin my good profile.

If you have very protrusive teeth sometimes getting two upper teeth and two lower teeth is a good solution.

I think when you have adult teeth when you are 13 some teeth must be removed for the braces to get them on that's what I thought cuz they removed 4 teeth on me cuz they were way too much for a 13 year old
