When removing existing restorations with decay it is imperative to clean out all remaining decay to ensure a long lasting restoration with minimal complications in the future. The last bit of composite resin removal exposed affected dentin (not the lining of the pulp). Transitioning to aluminum oxide (air abrasion therapy) is another means to keep the preparation conservative and elevate the treatment of this tooth. Hope that clears things up. Best, Sami
