This is our Group Reaction & Review to HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON. The franchise primarily follows the adventures of a young Viking named Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, son of Stoick the Vast, leader of the Viking island of Berk. How to Train Your Dragon (HTTYD) is an American media franchise from DreamWorks Animation and loosely based on the eponymous series of children's books by British author Cressida Cowell.

This is one of my favorite animated films. On the topic of Astrid and her change in attitude, think about where Hiccup was at the beginning of the movie. He was trying so hard to be someone he wasn’t and Astrid did not like the person he was trying to be. When he drops the facade and reveals who he really is-confident, a leader, and steadfast in his beliefs even if it means losing the acceptance of his village and father-she is meeting the real Hiccup for the first time. And she likes the real Hiccup. The shift in her own personality at that point is stark in comparison to her beginning as an aloof, stone cold perfectionist. Hiccup accepting who he is has, in turn, allowed Astrid to open up and reveal who SHE really is: a girl who is both competent and sweet, perceptive, encouraging, and a team player, all very different from the quiet, steely personality and constant frown she had at the beginning.

Yes! And I love how over the next videos her clothes get softer and softer. She doesn't have to try so hard to look tough, she just IS tough, and doesn't have to prove it by denying her softer side anymore.

Also she never bullied him, she yelled at him a couple times after he was this big shot all of a sudden which is honestly suspicious. But in the beginning when Snotlout makes fun of him she glares at him, he goes “what?” and she walks away shaking her head. She doesn’t seem pleased any other time people make fun of him.

@@LangkeeLongkee Yes this is true! She doesn’t participate in bullying him until his actions affect her personally, at which time she’s not really bullying him so much as she is stern. She gets volatile with him only once she feels that he is getting unearned glory while she works very hard to be as good as she is.

Astrid is one of my favorite animated characters. She wasn't being fickle, she just thought Hiccup was lazy. She worked so hard to be the best, and he seemingly tripped and fell into success and stole her rightful place at the top of the class. Once she saw for herself that he wasn't lazy, just a misunderstood genius who had the courage to do things differently in spite of what everyone else thought, she had respect for him. Her character morphs over the next videos as she learns from Hiccup how to accept herself as she is and not to push everyone away.

Excellently said. Moreover, Hiccup and Astrid are 15 - just barely hitting the heights of adolescence. They seldom know much about feelings or their place on the world, especially in Hiccup’s case. Astrid worked her arse off to serve her village in the threat against the dragons, and this wannabe comes strolling in and takes her place? I’d be a tad pissed too. Yet once she comes to realize who he actually his, it only makes sense that she’d be more understanding. There are even a few deleted scenes that hinted she had a crush on Hiccup far before he became the top student at the academy. One of them even made it into the full movie! Recall when Hiccup first hits Toothless? All the other Viking teens start ribbing on Hiccup, yet Astrid is the only one to not only ignore the situation, but also breaks eye contact with all together. She deliberately hides her try personality around others, beautifully shown by the fact that she doesn’t stay wearing her bangs apart until after meeting Hiccup and Toothless. For example: in movie two and three we learn that Astrid shows affection by “hitting”, something we see hinted in the first film. That’s why she tags Hiccup in the arm after their first flight. The kiss was just the more traditional method of showing affection, because it’s a lot easier to pick up on that than a smack in the arm. Subtle characterization like this is what makes these films. Watched the original film when I was nine, and loved the franchise ever since.

Also, Astrid is quite a traditional viking, and she does respect strength. She just didn't recognize what Hiccup had as strength until he showed her in terms she could understand, i.e. conquering dragons.

@@AMStryx The official HTTYD timeline puts Hiccup at 15 in movie 1, 16 in Defenders of Berk, 19 in Race to the Edge, 20 in movie 2, and 21 in the beginning of movie 3, and roughly his early 30s by the end of the third film. This was confirmed in interviews about the films production, as well as verbally in movie 2. There is a five year gap between movie 1 and 2, as said my Hiccup. Furthermore, Gobber confirms himself that Hiccup is 20 in HTTYD 2. Valka reaffirms this when she states that she’s been hiding amongst the dragons for “20 years” to keep Hiccup safe.

At 41:03 stoic does a little step back and shows immense regret on his face. He keeps walking because in his mindset, what's been said has been said and he can't just go and take it back, even if he regrets what he said

Stoic is one of my favorite characters from this movie, because of how many details really show that he's not a bad guy -he wants hiccup to stay indoors during attacks to protect him -he can tell hiccup isn't like the rest of them, so rather than try to mold him, he's hoping he'll find something else to do with his life -when he puts him in dragon training, he acts like it was hiccups idea, because for how many years, it was hiccups idea, so he thinks he's being a good dad catering to his sons demands -when he hears that hiccups become the star of dragon training, you can see the pride on his face -hes eager to talk to hiccup, to finally have a real bonding moment, only for hiccup to say he's going to be going to bed, which he happily obliges to for him -small important detail, stoic knocks over a bunch of stuff after leaving hiccup, showing that they're more alike than we thought -after disowning hiccup, there's that deliberate angle where we see him react to what he just said, almost collapsing and looking distraught for saying that to his own son -when he sees what they're really up against, he acknowledges that he was an idiot and tries to get everyone to safety while distracting it, initially by himself, that's fucking ballsy -when he realizes hiccup was right, he takes the moment, before the life and death situation, to apologize and say he was proud of him, which is probably the first time hiccup heard that from him, making it special for both of them Stoics a good guy, trying to be a good father and leader
@MattTOB618
@MattTOB618 Жыл бұрын
And about the apology thing: in many other kids' movies, when the disappointed parent comes around, it's usually when the child accomplishes something, and they start shouting that "That's my kid!" to anyone who can hear, and it can come off as shallow. For example, when Chicken Little wins the baseball game, his dad starts cheering with the others, but then when Chicken Little tries to warn them of the aliens, his dad falls back into his old behavior again. But here, Stoic takes the moment BEFORE Hiccup goes to face the dragon (when the only thing he's really accomplished is helping distract the dragon) to personally, one-on-one apologize. Stoic certainly *wants* Hiccup to win, but Hiccup doesn't *have* to win in order for his dad to be proud of him, and I find that great.

Plus, before he apologizes, he sees how his son has all of the qualities of a good leader. Not only is he willing to throw himself into the fight for the sake of protecting the clan (despite being left behind,) he’s also able to confidently take charge and lead this “squad” of teens during the heat of battle. Is Hiccup the traditional strong and brutish viking? No. But in this fight he proves to himself and his dad that he doesn’t have to be a big brawny dude in order to protect and lead his people.
@novastarburst3939

That. Also Hiccup never took his father's responsibilities seriously and messed up a lot before, making Stoic's like harder, especially as he's a single dad and has to take care of his whole tribe in a rather harsh environment in addition to a quite troublesome kid. Stoic has his bad moments but it's understandable, just like Hiccup is on his side. None of them is perfect, both of them grew up at the end.

Congratulations on your master's!! Also, I disagree that "Astrid didn't want him when he was down, just when he was cool." Astrid still hated him when he became "cool" and everyone else started chasing after him, because from what she could see, he hadn't done a damn thing to earn it! It was only when she started to see that he wasn't just completely unserious and cowardly and had substance to him that she began to respect him. It wasn't that she just wanted to be with the popular guy. She just had always thought he didn't care enough about protecting the village and being courageous. Once she saw that he really was serious and had hidden depths and wasn't just either running around causing problems or coasting on unearned popularity that she started to like him.

In fact you can pinpoint the very moment Astrid is beginning to think different about Hiccup - it is when she asks him if he is serious about putting Toothless’ life above the tribe’s dragon-killing habits, and Hiccup answers with a firm ”yes”.

Astrid already had a crush on Hiccup before Toothless. It is just very subtlely animated. When Hiccup messed up the village and everyone was making fun of him, she just looked at him with a sad expression. She is also the only one who noticed Hiccup started acting weird. That means that she was already paying attention to him before he started becoming popular. Girls don't pay that much attention to guys they don't care about. Also, in the third movie she confirms that she liked him for his sensitive side.

I don't think she had a crush on him before. I'd think that she thought of him as a joke at best and worse but more likely a menace and danger to her and their society. A guy who constantly causes problems that could get someone killed and seems to never contribute something useful. If she had to fight side by side with him, she thinks, that he is someone she could not trust to have her back. Edit: Which changes once she realizes that that is not who he is.

It's not just that Hiccup and Toothless are both missing a part of their body, but the reason that piece is missing is because of the other. Hiccup shot Toothless down and caused him to lose half his tail, Toothless caught Hiccup and lost him his leg. The whole stumbling thing was also a symbolic moment, because Toothless couldn't fly without Hiccup's help, and Hiccup couldn't walk without Toothless' support

With Toothless flying - he cannot fly on his own, he does need Hiccup. In the scenes with Toothless trying to throw Astrid off and when he takes them to the nest, Hiccup goes along with it because - presumably - if they try to do different things, go different directions from each other, they'll end up crashing. He can't deviate Toothless from his path because the results could be more dangerous and disastrous than whatever Toothless is trying to do; they HAVE to be in agreement.

one thing about this movie is the flying sequences are always top tier. the animation and the music.. they work so well together to really put you in the moment. ik its iconic, but the 'show you the world' number in aladdin honestly has nothing on that first flight with astrid. she seems like the type to only change her mind begrudgingly but even she couldnt act like it wasnt amazing lol. anyway i hope yall continue this series. the third one is my favourite

This whole movie can be seen as a universal metaphor but really I like to think it's about challenging the ideas of "toxic masculinity." The assumption that "real men" are physical, angry, non-emotional war machines (aka what it means to be a Viking) is challenged by Hiccup's compassion and empathy... He stood by his principals, stayed true to himself, and made active efforts to achieve his goals and find success on his own terms. When the time called for it he addressed violence but he didn't seek it. Some of the greatest people (specifically men) in history share those same attributes.
@pogpogpog7507

i think this point is even further emphasised by the second and the third films. hiccup never goes searching for violence, and even goes out of his way to talk to the villains (particularly drago) and convince them that peace is an option, even in the middle of battle.

I'd say, for Astrid she didn't like Hiccups sudden success in the arena because she never saw him train and improve on his own and thought he was getting help from someone and using some sort of trick or gimmick which made her mad because she'd trained and worked really hard everyday with her Axe skills just to get to where he suddenly showed up out of nowhere in, but once she realized he wasn't cheating but learned a new way of interacting with Dragons and actually learned it through trial and error she respected him for it and started to admire him for his willpower and cunning ingenuity that made up for his natural weak physique

I don't think Astrid switched when he became famous and good, i mean the whole town was loving and celebrating him and she was disliking him more because he wasn't being genuine and hiding stuff, but then he showed her the truth and let her in and she could respect that and also obviously like it and be genuine with him too. He trusted her so she was able to trust him too, it had nothing to do with his popularity or ability. That aside the soundtrack alone makes this movie a 10 for me it sends chills down my spine every time i hear it it's so phenomenally good and fitting and I'd recommend watching it again without talking over it just to hear the soundtrack properly tbh

I highly recommend watching Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk because they are basically together a two season series. I especially recommend watching Race to the Edge that is a direct continuation of the other two series that is sooo incredible! We see new dragons and especially see Hiccup develop as a leader throughout all three series. Also, every character gets developed and has moments to shine within each series! The tv shows are soo good! Also, this is an amazing reaction!

Had Stoik not stumbled back in shock after he told Hiccup what he did a lot of people would hate him. But you can tell he immediately regrets it. Fun fact: In the original script after Hiccup beats the Queen he wakes up in his house alone and comes to terms that he lost a foot alone. But when Steven Spielberg read the script he suggested that Toothless be there to support him, physically and emotionally.

I only saw this movie last month. It instantly became my favorite Dreamworks film. It's still hard for me to reconcile the way Hiccup was treated every time I watch it though. You look at the other characters objectively. They were no less flawed. They were just either better at specific things that were accepted by the village, or the other kids, for example, were just as clumsy, but Hiccup outshined them that way because he had that reputation.

Ayee, congrats on graduating man! Very funny and great reaction! The way y'all was on the other kids' asses though when Hiccup was starting to go on the come up, especially Raph and with Astrid had me dead LOL

The big dragon hunted dragons until they tried to hide in this Vulcano but it got in there to by moving through the lava, so the other dragons started to bring it food so it doesn’t eat them

Don't be rude about Astrid. She's actually the only one who stood her ground and didn't like Hiccup when he came up, she treated him the same as she did when he was down. When she UNDERSTOOD what his situation was, it touched her heart because she recognizes the same loyalty Hiccup has to Toothless the same way she's so fiercely protective of her tribe and that hatred of losers is instilled in all the kids. Astrid is the one who encourages Hiccup to do something in the end.

Thanks for the hilarious reaction. You know I never actually noticed it as well. The villagers basically thought he was useless and didn’t help him out but when he starts doing the things extraordinary and becomes popular, now they wanna cheer for him. It’s a shame that’s how the world is even today, people only hang with you for the money and fame and leave when you get broke or suffer a setback
