Back when films had humanity, beauty, and real wit and humor. I remember seeing this at the State Theater in my hometown in summer '82, and it has remained one of my favorites ever since. Pollack always has a nice cinematic touch. Good to see the deleted scenes for the first time. Thanks for the sharing, Jake!

Film didn't come out in the summer of 1982. It came out in Dec. of 1982.

Thank you for posting these, they're delightful!! Going into the wrong public restroom should have stayed IN the movie 😀 😀

My thoughts exactly! They really did trim the fat - there isn't a single scene here that would have improved the movie. And what a great movie it is, it has really stood the test of time.

@@glamdolly30Who played Michael’s first ex and hubby in one of the deleted scenes?

The secret of truly great writing - and especially truly great comedic writing - is to ruthlessly throw out one quarter of what you wrote. These deleted scenes from the fantastic big screen comedy TOOTSIE prove the point! The best comedy writers are ruthless self-editors. The worst comedy writers sit around with other lousy comedy writers, laughing at their own jokes! I work in television by the way!

The scenes with Charles Durning's farm were shot not far from where I live. Looks just like it did in the movie.

The first scene in the restaurant where Michael and Jeff work has an interesting point. It shows that Michael knew Terry Bishop personally and that's why later when Sandy is rejected he goes to the receptionist and asks if Terry is working there today because he figures he can then ask Terry to get Sandy in to read. Michael did mention to Sandy, "I'll get you in to read," but he doesn't say how. I guess Sydney thought we were smart enough to infer Michael knew Terry in a way that he could get Sandy in to read.

Right - It's obvious from the scene at the network that Michael knows Terry Bishop. The deleted scene tells us that they had been roommates - an interesting piece of information, but not one that has to be conveyed to the audience. The scene does communicate something that hasn't been conveyed elsewhere though, at least not explicitly - that Michael's pride is really wounded by the failure of his career. Many of his peers have moved on to bigger things, while he has stagnated, still living in the same dumpy apartment he once shared with Terry Bishop, who is now a soap opera star making big bucks. I can see why the scene was deleted, but I think it would have fine had they kept it.

They should have kept the scene at 7:47. I found it hard to believe that Michael/Dorothy was on the phone that long with George and nobody walked in the room. This was more realistic.

The restaurant scene added nothing to the plot and didn’t advance the story. Good call to cut it.

Agree, the scene might have worked but the actress didn’t capture the moment very well, too contrived , felt like an audition (ironically)

It's funnier when he just mentions it in dialogue to George.

I'm sort glad they cut the line about Hitler being a human being and not an animal. There would've been a lot of protests over that if that had stayed in.
