Everybody hated Kubrick- endless takes (70+ takes), endless alteration of the script, verbal abuse and so on. Jack Nicholson said he stopped memorizing his lines because Kubrick kept on changing it.

JG that’s the perfectionism that made him one of the greatest directors of all time tho, I’m sure it was frustrating for most actors that worked with him. Pretty interesting hearing Malcom macdowell speak about his approach in working with him as a directorial genius, allowing his performance to sort of charge the film of A Clockwork Orange. A lot of the important and iconic scenes were improvised and Kubrick admired and encouraged it in that particular role. Haven’t gone through all of his films yet, but man he’s such an interesting filmmaker. I’ve noticed my favorite films come from those nutty perfectionists like Peter Jackson and Christopher Nolan. Glad I wasn’t the one having to act for em tho lmao it takes a special kinda actor to excel under that pressure in circumstance

@@nostalgiajunkie He made the whole cast shun her and not talk to her, he berated and pushed her past her tipping point. She literally went mad and never worked again. That's not a great director, a great director could direct someone as opposed to pushing them to full schizophrenia.

@@nostalgiajunkie How many great directors weren't a pain in the ass on the set? Imagine how much will and energy and perseverance it takes to get all these people--cast and crew--to not just "phone it in" now and again. Most directors, like most of us in life, reach a point where we say "good enough"/"that's a wrap." Great directors don't--they keep pushing until their vision is actually there on the screen. That means you have to work against the natural human tendency to mediocrity and that means you have to piss some people off. It is the price of excellence and the number of great directors who got great work from people without being a pain in the ass is very, very few.

"Unwanted romantic advances." Ha, nice euphemism. Tipi Hedren's said: “I’ll simply say that he suddenly grabbed me and put his hands on me. It was sexual, it was perverse, and it was ugly, and I couldn’t have been more shocked and repulsed. The harder I fought him, the more aggressive he became. Then he started adding threats, as if he could do anything to me that was worse than what he was trying to do at that moment." When Hedren fought him off, Hitchcock promised, “I’ll ruin your career.” She was still under contract.

"Unwanted romantic advances" is an extremely kind way of saying he tried to force her into sex - he *blatantly* told her to make herself sexually available to him at any given moment!!!! Then when she refused he kept her in her contract, by virtue she couldn't work for any other company and he didn't give her any roles!!!! To me that's sexually based extortion and is fare more savage then just "unwanted romantic advances"

It was her first movie and she hadn't yet worked with nightmare directors like Orson Welles, other actresses who had more experience actually found Hichcock pretty sweet. let me tell you that, if you had watched not only My Best Fiend, but all the herzog/kinski related footage, what they both wrote in their books about each other, the fact that they made 5 films together... this was a creative love relationship, with herzog being some sort of dompteur for the beast that was kinski. herzog recalled, if he let kinski scream his butt off for an hour, he would get an amazing performance out of him like in the clip that you just saw at the end of Aguirre.. he used him, in a way. all for the sake of film.

Shelly Duvall has said in retrospect that she understands what Kubrick did to get the best performance out of her - and the end result is really amazing. People might think she's annoying in the film, but she's very believable as someone who's stressed-out, frightened, and scared as hell. I can't imagine it was enjoyable for her to make the film, because Kubrick really was making her situation really awful, but she seems to have come around since then.

He carried a shotgun with him whilst filming Aguire, and would fire warning shots to keep Kinski in place. On the set of Jaws 2 (1978), Roy Scheider and Jeannot Szwarc did not get along. the producer asked them both to air their differences but it resulted in a physical confrontation. Roy Scheider even wrote a letter to Jeannot Szwarc that said, working with Jeannot Szwarc is knowing that he'll never say he is sorry or admitting he overlooked something.

Man these actors and these directors have hard time for their situations of making their films, but at least they did. Here's are more few actors and directors hated each other: - Christian Bale & McG (Terminator Salvation) - Daisy Ridley & J.J. Abrams (Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens) - Lindsay Lohan & Garry Marshall (Georgia's Rule) - Leonardo DiCaprio & Clint Eastwood (J. Edgar) - Hayden Christensen & George Lucas (Star Wars, Episode II: Attack of the Clones & Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) - Lindsay Lohan & Paul Schrader (The Canyons) Never trust Lindsay - Sean Connery & Stephen Norrington (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) - Christina Ricci & Vincent Gallo (Buffalo 66) - Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio & James Cameron (The Abyss) - The Entire Cast & Directors of Movie 43 (Movie 43) - Val Kilmer & Tony Scott (Top Gun) - Keanu Reeves & Joe Charnanic (The Watcher) - Emily Blunt & Rob Letterman (Gulliver's Travels)

How about Fritz Lang and just about every actor he worked with? Brigitte Helm, who played Maria and the robot in "Metropolis" was traumatized by the experience. In the scene where the robot is burned at the stake the flames were so close her hair was singed. He used to fire real bullets on set. Thankfully he had become an excellent marksman during WWI. In Hollywood, both Henry Fonda and Spencer Tracy vowed never to work with him again. Unfortunately, Fonda did have to work with him twice. He had played Jesse James' brother Frank in "Jesse James" and Lang was hired to direct the sequel, "The Return Of Frank James." Randolph Scott had a scene in "Western Union" where his character had to free his tied hands by burning the rope in a campfire. Lang made him do it for real. Etc., etc., etc....

Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski belong on #1 spot. First, because their love-hate relationship spanned over several decades while most other actor/director brake ups occurred during the shooting of one specific movie. Second because of the artistic achievement that resulted from the fights between those two extremely talented film makers. Kinski and Herzog constantly pushed themselves to the limits. Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo would not be half as good without it.

Three Kings is an excellent film. Are you never going to go see Hitchcock or Welles or Kubrick as well? Never listen to a Beethoven symphony, or the music of the Rolling Stones? Never consider buying a Tesla? Many creative geniuses are assholes. It's really none of our business how they treat people, unless its actually criminal. Is American Beauty or the first three seasons of House of Cards suddenly bad because Kevin Spacey harassed some people on set? You need to separate aesthetics from ethics, or all you're gonna watch is Disney--and even that stuff has shit swept under the rug.
