The especially interesting part of Sean Connery turning down Lord of the Rings is that he turned down a role in the Matrix for the same reason, not understanding the script. Because those films turned out to be massively successful he accepted his role in League of Extraordinary gentlemen despite not understanding the script.

You are incorrect about Buddy Epson leaving the Wizard of Oz due to reaction of makeup. To apply the tinman's facial makeup - they painted it white and blew real aluminum power into his face to make it silver. Buddy didn't know that he was breathing it in and his lungs were coated with the aluminum power... almost killing him. It was equivalent to having severe pneumonia. --- btw: -- When Buddy was in the hospital near death - the make-up was altered and they mixed in the aluminum power directly into the paint - creating "paste" that was painted on.

The thing about Christopher Plummer replacing Kevin Spacey though is that Plummer was great in that role. It would be great to see all of his scenes side by side with Spacey in the same scenes but based on what little I saw in the trailer with Spacey in the role verses the same scenes in the actual movie, I thought it was actually an improvement.

honestly, i could have ever stomached Sean Connery as Gandalf anyway. as Bond? sure. brilliant. Entrapment? even in LXG? excellent. but he can't have ever fit that part. Ian is Gandalf, through and through. same thing with James Remar. Michael Biehn is both Corporal Hicks and Kyle Reese, through and through. it's impossible to see anyone else as either, despite the fact that it's creepy as hell that he played different key characters in the same fictional universe.

Buddy Epson wasn't "allergic" to aluminum it was powdered and after ten days he breathed in so much his lungs were coated making it nearly impossible to breath.... similar thing happens with "smoke inhalation" soot with smoke coats lungs making breathing hard for months/years after....

The way studios operate is to produce 5-10 films a year called tentpoles, these are high-risk gambling using hundreds of millions of investors dollars. Creativity has NOTHING to do with it. Its all about statistics, whatever is being watched, is made. These safe bet films revenue are used to fund the indie studios and the small indie films. They do this so no matter how much money they make, their profit margins stay the same, they reap tax benefits and keep hundereds of thousands of people employed.

Studio was not keen on last one, to them it was a bit OTT on creatures and story, also did not make the money they wanted. Was on hold for years, all wanted to do it but think studio did not want to part with cash unless certain things were done. Then Deadpool came, studio wants a Hellboy thats in that line, and making that money, so they took on actor thats now known and liked and Neil Marshall. Marshall makes violent movies/TV shows, this is more inline with what they are going for, a darker more violent Hellboy, say R in USA and 15 cert in UK. Will it be good....no idea, hope so.

Regarding black, Asian and white actors playing roles, in a historical true life drama, I believe the actor should be from the same race and gender as the real character. When it comes to fiction, this is less important. That's why its called acting. However, producers have to be wary of not annoying fans as films are about profits which is why I doubt we'll see a black, female, gay 007.
