I know it's not a popular opinion but aroids are not really toxic to pets. The oxalate crystals are irritant but they would have to feed on them, like rabbits, to actually suffer. It's the same for us and raw spinach, yes it has oxalates but you'd have to either have a medical conditions or eat A LOT of it to have health problems from it. So while you don't want to risk your kittens' health, sure, I'm convinced that in a years time you will be able to bring all those aroids to your house :) As long as the cats don't eat a lot of leaves habitually, occasional gnawing is not going to hurt them. Just don't get a Cycas :)

The big problem with cats and plants is they sometimes mistaken plants with cat grass. Personally my cats leave my big leaved plants alone but as soon as the leaves become slimer like a fern they like chewing them in case there's nothing else avaible. I don't disagree with what you say because I had similar experience but better save than sorry.

@@kassandrastein4249 also some cat breeds do get kidney problems (the risk factor in the case of oxalates) so I agree to be careful and wait until the cat is mature enough and used to plants around. My cat only used to eat dracaena so yes, super narrow pointy leaves. And I see a lot of plant parents with cats with no problems, so I just think Kaylee will also have them in her house soon enough :)

I definitely agree! I have around 40 aroids in my house and a cat who can get on anything and everything. It's been years and there's little bite holes in my dracena and pothos, and leaves everything else alone. I'm generally more concerned about her playing with the leaves on my larger leaf aroids than her chewing on them.

One of my cats used to eat old leaves from my ficus. After I put the ficus somewhere else she never did it again. I just reflected one year after that her problems with digesting came from them. She once also destroyed one of my favorite plants because she was angry. In general sometimes cats also bite plants because they are bored. Wouldn't recommend even midly toxic plants to new pet owner especially when they are kitten. First watching them on how they treat non toxic ones and then maybe add everything else. I also let my cats welcoming new ones when I get them so they know they belong to the gang 😀

@@kassandrastein4249 Ficus is a different story than aroids, latex present in the sap can actually get pretty dangerous if anyone develops an allergy and it's also way more irritant than oxalates. But I agree with taking it slowly, especially with kittens.

Funny you made this list, it's basically my list of plants I want once they arrive in UK and become affordable. I've clearly been good at keeping my eyes peeled, because in the last 2 months I've bought: a Lemon&Lime Maranta for £10, A 4 leaf Clarinervium for £17, A Macodes Petola for £13, that nearly died because it had travel issues, but is on the mend... slowly but surely. And a big Gloriosum for a tenner. So your pricing is spot on, and yes, I would love more of this please 😊

Caladiums are amaazing. I've been growing them for three seasons, all from tubers, and they're absolute showstoppers. I quite enjoy that the leaves don't last all year, because they give you a little project every spring, and more space during winter. :)

I don't like white variegated plants but I start covetting a Philodendron Florida Ghost after watching your videos 😂❤. I love how the leaf changes color from juvenile to mature (like syngonium), long contrasting red petioles, lobed leaves 😍, and a lot of people mentioned it's very easy to care. I bought an itsy bitsy baby plant for $25. Hopefully it grows fast.

I'd love to see a part 2 of this. I have several aglaonemas around my house, they are extremely easy to care for, no pests, no disease, many different colors to choose from and very affordable here in Canada 👍 I have a crocodile fern that i reacued from Lowes for $1 because it's Lowes and they don't know how to care for plants. Hello from a new fan in Canada. You're clever, funny and knowledgeable--and straight-talking. I respect that hugely, where a few plant channels I've given up on because of one thing or another. Love your selections and interestingly, I have a few of those--Cebu Blue, Crocodile fern, a small Anthurium clarinervium and a calathea or two--and waiting patiently to get Florida Ghost, which at least one local garden centre has had and will get again. And a jewel orchid--I had a tiny pink-veined one but it got some malaise and I've not seen it offered for sale anywhere. It's been infinitely fascinating to see all sorts of sudden plant enthusiasts (a COVID thing) for those of us who have been growing plants indoors and out since forever. The ones who swoop down on the latest must-have 100.00+ plant...they can keep those, as I know in a couple years they'll be reasonably priced. Like Pink Princess (I love mine and paid 25 bucks for it, and it's lovely) and a bunch of other plants that are dropping in price. Anyway, I enjoy your videos and still have many from the past to catch up on.

Definitely agree about Ikea. The quality has gone down over the last few years here in Australia. You used to be able to get lots of different live plants and great plant pots and troughs. You can still get small pots but the large troughs are non-existent. They have a very large selection of plastic plants which is very disappointing. please I would love it if you did a part 2. Pelargoniums aka Geranium, there's some really pretty ones out there that do tickle the average houseplant collector. For foliage: 'Freak of Nature', a fully sunstressed 'Vancouver Centennial', a sunstressed 'L´ Elegante' For flowers: 'Unicorn Hot Pepper', 'Zonartic Unicorn Hot Butter', 'Madame Thibault', 'Mere Casino' (the one pictured on my avatar) For those that like weird/commercially rare plants: P. tetragonum, P. gibbosum, P. cotyledonis Bonus point for being really great plants for people with winter depression, they survive lots of abuse. And there's over 30000 registered variants so something for everyone :3

something I've found that works with my cats when they used to chew my plants is use a pet safe bitter spray on the plants. they end up thinking all plants taste like that and steer clear from even plants I never sprayed. definitely try it on safe plants first and see how it goes, if it works you may be able to have any plant you want. keep the spray on hand just in case you need to reinforce the "plants taste bad" idea
