The first contemporary album I ever bought was Vol 4. Also had Machine head, Ziggy, Schools out.

Pat: I graduated from high school in June 1972. School's Out! I saw Black Sabbath in May of 1972 and the backup band was Yes. Saw Led Zeppelin that summer and then both Traffic and The Moody Blues in the fall. Foghat was either that year or the next as well as Humble Pie. I saw Blue Oyster Cult in fall of 1973 and then many times since up through November, 2021. An album you may have left out was This As A Brick. Great job, though! Best time for Rock and Roll music.

Thank you! Yes, getting a lot of flack for not having Thick As A Brick, would have made my top 20, I like Jethro Tull, but I was never over the moon about them.

@@thathalloweenmoviecollector that’s OK, I was never much for the Allman Brothers (or Kiss 😁). This was a great idea no matter what. So much great music and I lived through it and you got to live through it in the 80s as you learned of it.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust 4. Deep Purple - Machine Head 3. Hawkwind - Doremi Fasol Latido 2. Alice Cooper - Schools Out 1. Black Sabbath - Vol 4. 🤘🔥🤘I must dive into Blue Oyster Cult, it’s a band I never got into to !

@@thathalloweenmoviecollector1972 is an impossible year to choose a top ten (though not as hard as 1971). Colin, I'd agree with most of your selections as well as most of Pat's suggestions, but that's a lot more than ten. Much though I love Amon Düül, I don't think Wolf City makes the list (Phallus Dei is much better). I'm a big fan of Can but I seem to be unique in not loving their 1972 album Ege Bamyasi.

Blue Oyster Cult's debut album is amazing. Buck Dharma is a very underrated guitar player.

~~ the BÖC debut released early in 1972 is an amazing record - not a massive seller like some other well-known debuts from the likes of Led Zeppelin - Boston - Van Halen - but very original & eclectic - even if the main riff from "Cities on Flame with Rock & Roll" - was a bit similar to "The Wizard" from Sabbath's great debut 2 years earlier - Buck Dharma's guitar work was sublime & fully formed right from the start - it's no wonder Jimmy Page called him his favorite rock guitarist back then ..

Neil Young Harvest should have been on this list. Far better than some of these. I am delighted to see Blue Oyster Cult's first album here, it is a hard rock masterpiece.

Where is Thick as a Brick?

Starts off good, Zappa's only "jazz" LP then quickly gets pretty dull pretty quickly. And no that's just because it's a pretty mainstream selection. And then you pull a couple of fantastic choices for numbers 2 and 1. Is Supernaut the best riff ever?
