The only thing that (for me) makes Vertigo a personal no. 2 ever filmed - is the twist, and not the twist itself which i utterly adore by the way, it's the timing of it. If that had been revealed in the very last scene - would of turned out beyond perfect. Think about it - the main female character is gone, the male lead still in love with her finds "her" again, does everything in his power to turn her into "her" The "second" female lead has to be a 100% crazy to let anyone do all of that to her, the male lead obsessed by what happened to him not once but twice (and the second time when he was over the top in love - which made it ten times worse) finally has what he was after from the very first scene where he saw her in that green dress and a 100% after he saved her from almost drowning - and then "he looses it" - just take a close look at his face after he kisses him without knowing what You've known from the middle of the feature. The drive to the tower and the entire tower climbing to the top creates pure thriller in the upcoming moments - and you as a viewer haven't got a clue why what you're seeing is happening when he finally has what he's been after, and then, AND THEN ... You find out - what he figured out when he took a look at her in the mirror after the transformation and saw ... "HER" and then the rest plays out exactly as it did - and ends tragically as it did If Hitch did that and the movie it self could never get more than a 10 i personally would of given it an 11 without a seconds thought. Vertigo is not just a pure Hitchcock masterpiece - it's one of the greatest things cinema itself has ever gone through and seriously doubt any thriller will ever come close to it

I only saw two of Hitch's early B&W films - The 39 Steps and Shadow Of a Doubt - both of which I liked very much. Shadow is best largely on the performance of Teresa Wright. 39 Steps was wayyy early even before WW2 but it holds up and is a little like North By Northwest.I agree that Vertigo and Psycho belong on top not only for a Hitchcock film but for any English speaking film. I rank both among the top 10 films of all time. Vertigo is also interesting because it is a quite long film and yet is entirely without flaws. Psycho is a shorter film but does have a serious flaw at the 2/3 mark when it encounters a shortish dull patch. P.S. I think Frenzy deserved an honorary mention on your list.

1. North by Northwest 2. To Catch a Thief 3. Rear Window 4. Psycho 5. Vertigo North by Northwest is one of my top 3 films of all time. I take any opportunity I can to watch it as it’s a near flawless film in terms of pace, mystery, wit, thrills, and spectacle. It and To Catch a Thief has an unrivaled cheeky, quippy sense of that only Cary Grant could ever bring, while still being immersive and charming. And Eva Marie Saint and Grace Kelly are both complex, convincing, and make for excellent dramatic and comedic chemistry. Both films are visually enthralling, especially for their time, and while the story of the former is more dramatic and complex, they each are endlessly intriguing and exciting. I know To Catch a Thief isn’t traditionally held to the same esteem as what most consider to be his masterpieces, but I think it’s clearly his second best work, and only a hair away from his best. Grace Kelly’s performance is fantastic. She’s also phenomenal in Rear Window, and so is Jimmy Stewart. Rear Window is engaging and well paced with strong acting and such a unique perspective. Although at sometimes it can be a tad silly, and the mystery is rather well, not mysterious. Even on my first watch I felt hardly any of the surprises I did with the other four on this list. But it is still suspenseful. Even without as much mystery the tension was great and kept me on the edge of my seat. Psycho on the other hand was filled to the brim with tension and mystery. I was genuinely surprised several times over throughout my first viewing, and although lacking the same mega star caliber lineup that the first three held, is well cast and intensely thrilling. Yet, I find it lacking the same degree of sheer entertainment that the other three brought, both on initial and subsequent viewings. And in a strong fifth is Vertigo, which for me did not compare with the others but was still a strong film nonetheless. The suspense was there but it felt rough around the edges in contrast. This list isn’t set in stone as I have yet to see Dial M for Murder still. Also while I’m here, didn’t enjoy The birds. Everyone seems to love it and I like Hitchcock but it just doesn’t do anything for me.
