Some good over actors not included in this list could be Kevin Spacey, Will Ferrell, even Steve Carell. He is amazing and always stunning, but you cannot deny that he is quite theatrical; you don't hear many people in real life talk like his characters do. Come to think of it, it's actually a good thing since reality and realism don't always look good

+StrasbergProtégé I don't think that has anything to do with it. "Overacting" is a stylistic choice - not a character trait. While Bill the Butcher was perhaps more flamboyant, it was a central theme to the actual character - not a characteristic of Daniel's acting discipline. If you look at most of the other actors on this list, they all carry the same style throughout every single one of their roles. Every character they play, regardless of anything, the actor's choice to be overly dramatic will at some point take precedent - typically sooner rather than later. They sensationalize every emotion and every mannerism and every behavior of every character - Nicolas Cage is especially bad about this, if you consider this sort of thing as "bad." Sometimes it can be fun. But if all of your characters do this... it becomes a tell and really exposes the lack of range in the craft. In other words, we no longer see the character... we see the actor. This is categorically not Daniel Day Lewis in any role he's ever played. All of his characters are unique. All of his characters are individual. All of his characters are different. All of his performances are focused on the objectivity of the character, and not on his subjective expression, even though his method IS his subjective expression. All of his characters are self-defining and memorable, and demonstrably different, one from the other. If you take Nic Cage in the movie Snake Eyes, and pit him against Nic Cage in Face-Off... you've got exactly the same character. If you take Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction, and Sam Jackson in anything else... you have the same character. If you take John Travolta in Broken Arrow and John Travolta in The General's Daughter and John Travolta in Face-Off... you have the same character. If you take TJ Hooker and Captain Kirk... what you have is William Shatner. This is how actors get type-cast. Fortunately for most of these actors, they're type cast in what was at least highly desirable roles at some point in time. Sure, these actors have at some point tried to do different things. Jim Carrey for instance I believe gave an honest attempt with The Truman Show. I think he was pretty successful. But he does the other stuff so well, or at least, audiences wanted more of that at the time, that they find it hard to accept him otherwise. I think it's a shame, because I think Jim had a plenty more "Truman Shows" in him. Honestly, I think Robin Williams deserves a little more respect than being pinned as an overactor as he has a much larger range than most everyone else on this list, the same as DDL. Robin was a highly trained theater actor and knew how to do it right. His formal training was in theater - not in... comedy... if there is such a thing. If you look at his early stand up work... his stand up was more like a one-man performance show. It wasn't really about telling jokes.

Culprit LA Still, even in plays and movies that are set in a place a long time ago, the actors still bring some naturalism in their acting. Even with Shakespeare they have tried to do that nowadays. Also, the other actors in "Gangs of New York" and "There Will Be Blood" were more close to the acting style of most film actors nowadays With that being said, Daniel Day-Lewis gave an amazing performance in both of these movies and he's probably my second favorite actor (Marlon Brando being first), but his acting style is still quite theatrical for the general moviegoer. He was ranked quite low on this list though, so it shouldn't be taken in such a negative way

I see what you mean, but my experience from Daniel Day-Lewis is still that his performances are more theatrical and larger-than-life than most other film actors, but it's still done in an amazing way. I also think it's possible to portray Bill Cutting and Daniel Plainview in a more "naturalistic" way, but since we now associate Daniel Day-Lewis with those roles, it's harder to imagine a different approach. I look up to Daniel Day-Lewis and have loved every performance from him, but he clearly has a different acting style than Robert de Niro for example, who relies more on making the situations clear and relatable instead of him making the scene. Jim Carrey is really underrated. He has had amazing dramatic performances in "Doing Time On Maple Drive", "The Truman Show", "Man on the Moon", "The Majestic", and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", and he shows soreness, inner conflict, warmth, and likability just in his eyes and facial expressions. However, most people only associate him with those gross-out and immature comedy films, and I hate that

+SabineEins I can't say I totally disagree. I've only seen Depp play one, maybe two roles that were genuinely noteworthy. Jack Sparrow was legitimately good, at least for the first film. And if we're honest, he's the only reason to watch the other three in the Pirates franchise. Other than that... Edward Scissor-Hands, maybe? And, I don't even know if it's fair to peg it on Depp's performance. It was really the concept of the film that carried itself, along with Burton's direction. Burton's gotten stale over the years, but he had the juice back in the day. One might argue he does the same thing over and over again, and it's only now that we realize how stale his "vision" is, but... Beetlegeuce and Edward Scissor Hands are legitimate classic films that I think is safe to say have stood the test of time. One might suggest Donnie Brasco, but if we're all honest... we all know deep down why we watch that movie. That movie belongs to Al Pacino. Other than that, if everyone is really honest... Johnny Depp is incredibly overrated. Other than Pirates, Edward Scissor Hands, and Cry Baby (which I admit is sort of a guilty pleasure of mine rather than genuinely good), I can't name a single one of his films that are enjoyable to watch, even the big budget ones.

He's just about the strangest actor working today, with an odd way of delivering lines that makes any scene he's in automatically awkward. Also, notice that both the hero and villain of "Con Air" was on this list. It was a great movie with a great cast. Cage and Malkovich, John Cusak, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, Colm Meaney, Dave Chapelle and, of course, Steve Buscemi. Definitely a must-see.

Most of these aren't OVER-acting. They are PERFECTLY acting. They are fulfilling the role of the character they are cast as. When Sam Jackson shouts and says silly things, it's because it is in the script. He is a great actor because he does it perfectly and makes it believable. Same with most of these. Tim Curry is obviously an exception, as is Bill Shatner.
