Sorry Jon ...The GTHO Phase 3 is the greatest Aussie car of all time IMO..It has stood the test of time and the only one all others are judged against.. Might be nearly 50 years old , might not be anywhere near the fastest now but it's the "Icon" of them all . The other one that should also never be forgotten is the 1967 XR GT . The XR was the very reason the Aussie car culture even began . I'd rate either the GHTO or the XR GT higher than the W1 as fantastic a car as it is..Maybe in a few decades it might over take the two Fords but only time will tell... The reason for the Nissan engine is there engines wouldn’t run on unleaded so they had to do the Nissan engine

no they wouldn't run on 91 at the time so they needed another motor for the mean time so they rang up Nissan. They used these until they could run their motors on 91

Trouble is this imported engine was like nothing an Aussie car had before and it was such a leap that when the VN came out with it's powerful but very very crude pushrod American V6, sales reps reportedly begged for their VLs back.
@spiritlevelstudios4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfrench7299 The VN was engineered for the RB30 but it all fell through at the last minute. I like the Buick V6. They go forever, has massive torque and they weigh next to nothing. Also very low cost.
@jamesfrench72994 жыл бұрын
The Spewik wasn't decent until the last few months of the VN when it got the upcoming VP's improved version. The first batch was a horribly rough (but nice crisp sounding) motor with rear main seal problems. The Falcon 3.9 was much more pleasant at the time.

idk if someones already answered this but Holden put the rb30 in the VL because at the time (1986) Australia said all cars must run on unleaded 91 octane fuel and Holden didn't have time to develop a new engine so they borrowed the rb30 from Nissan the rest is history. they later changed the v8 to run on unleaded 91 octane. Also as part of the deal Nissan never sold a turbo r31 skyline in Australia because Holden was afraid it be to much competition with the VL turbo.

The reason they changed from the 'long in the tooth' holden straight six 3.3L, was because this is the era when unleaded fuel was being introduced,and with the new emissions laws based around the Aussie Auto production industry,it was easier to use the RB 30 & 20 engines because apparently it was getting hard to engineer & develop a new unleaded version of the old inline 3.3Litre.It was an interesting era.It was the first year model for Ford Australia to stop production of the V8 Falcon which would finally return again in the 1992 Falcon,Fairlane etc.

The VL turbo ended up with the RB30 engine because the old Australian-designed straight-6 could not be brought up to modern emissions requirements of the 1980s. The Nissan engine in the VL was for a variety of reasons, the Holden red engine from the EH to VK (was based the Chevy11/Nova in-line six of 194 ci) was produced in Australia for Holden sedans & Toranas in 138,149,161,173,179,186 & 202 cubic inches was a late 1950’s US all cast iron pushrod design, Holden tried to make it comply to ongoing Australian design rules (ADR’s) with electronic ignition, carburation & fuel injection on the last the “ black” VK engines to try to make it comply but the old Holden six just could not meet the emission laws and fuel economy targets of the day without a radical redesign but GM-H realised the quickest and easiest way was to just buy the RB30 from Nisssan, as a matter of fact the Nissan six was also originally planned to be used in the VN commodore but GM in the US had the 3.8 Buick V6 then available but GM-H did a lightning quick reconfiguration on it so it could be used as a front engine rear wheel drive unit as was the commodore and that is why if you lift the Hood of an original 88-89 VN you will notice that it has a long metal top water inlet to the rear of the engine that was because it was used east west to drive the front wheels of the US cars, sorry to ramble on but just some facts on our Australian auto history, as to your 1 to10 best Aussie cars that will always be bloody hard because it does have a lot to do with personal opinions and always will but l will say your choices are sound and it probably has a lot to do with the age of us as it really depends on what we grew up with, for me l would have to include the first GT Falcon the XR with the high performance 289 Windsor with that magnificent Hurst shifter and the XW GTHO’s with the 351 Windsor in the phase 1 and Cleveland in the phase 2 also that 300 BHP you mentioned in the XY GTHO Was a 351 Cleveland that actually was putting out around 380 BHP from the factory the standard XY GT gave the 300 BHP but Ford Australia gave the HO the same power figures it was said to save the exorbitant insurance costs of the day.

If memory serves me, the RB30 in all VL Commodores was to do with emissions standards back in the mid eighties. The old school Holden 3.3 litre (or 202) couldn't be made clean enough for the new emission standards of the day. Therefore Holden was doing some model sharing with another manufacturer at the time being Nissan for engines and transmissions (partially owing to the Button plan to the mid 80's too). I had the good fortune to work at the time in the Federal Governments fleet back in the day and from memory the VL turbo was damn near bullet proof. Never had an engine failure that I can recall, maybe the odd diff blowup, but that was it. Being a Fordy I would have put the Phase 3 or the F6 310 at the top but sadly now none are made here anymore thanks to the big two treating OZ poorly (in my view). All cars that you placed in your top 10 are now becoming aspirational OZ automotive hardware and will be soon outrageously expensive in a few years. To all, if your lucky enough to own one, hang on and cherish it as it is now a bonafide or in the near future will be a collectible.

Added a couple of minor mods being cold air intake and a 2.5" cat back exhaust, while it goes pretty hard I miss the grunty goodness of the Barra Turbo.

Just popped up late reply great list the xy was s gtHo. When I was a kid my friends neighbor owned one phase 3 and we were lucky enough to get a couple of rides in it (in Nz) it was doing just on 15 sec quater times with balanced motor and 4 speed manual no traction off the line back in 1978

Great top 10 Ross, if you could of squeezed another two in, it would have to be the Ford XB GT Coupe and Holden HQ GTS Monaro...... sexiest cars ever!

No XR6 Sprint???? Ur actually joking. It’s the Most powerful production inline 6 to be ever made and it’s as rare as a GT-F. Smh. It would've been my number 1.
@lukesm57474 жыл бұрын
I think you will find he just likes the looks of the f6 more and the fact it cane in manual (his opinion not mine). And in 2008 when the f6 came it was leaps and bounds over the Euro equivalents including the m3. Xr6 sprint still has the inline 6 power record but im not sure it would challenge the m3s in 2016. Xr6 sprint is awesome tho , a genuine collectors car
@smartey26124 жыл бұрын
Luke Sm lol have u driven an XR6 Sprint? cause I have. It’s miles ahead of the FG F6. The looks of the FG X were perfect for the time and I actually like it a lot more than the same repeated design from the 2000s Falcons. Outdated and horrible and that’s coming from a guy who owns a BA. It makes it look unique and it’s like eye candy to look at. Btw I can’t understand for the life of me why people think the manual is better. I mean it would be acceptable on a car from the 70s/80s/90s but it doesn’t make sense on a car that’s modern with all that tech. Doesn’t feel right. Plus there slower in manual. The 6s are made for pickup and go not dump the clutch and spin. The car is like it’s demanding u to take it seriously and I love it. It’s a car that doesn’t cop crap from anyone. As for the M3 thing, he literally said in his review that it would blow the doors off the M3 and then when u compare it to something like a stinger or a Quadrafolio it still blows the doors off of it. It is still leaps and bounds over the Euro stuff. Don’t forget though that it’s also Ford’s Australia’s Fastest car and it was cheaper than the 100+ grand GT-F. Best car to come out of Ford’s Australia and people heavily underestimate it. End of story.
@lukesm57474 жыл бұрын
@@smartey2612 i agree with all that. Im just guessing he took the f6 for the manual. Personally i think thr ZF is better, always has been. Pretty much does everyrhing better than manual. Im not sure about the m3 stuff tho. M3s run 12.1-12.4 and 0-100 in 4 flat not because they are more powerful but probably due to their lack of weight and dual clutch auto.
@smartey26124 жыл бұрын
Luke Sm Yeah, I’ve seen XR6 Sprints though that were stock from the factory do 0-100 in 4.5 seconds and 1/4s in 12.4 so it’s pretty evenly matched I’d say. Wrap those rims in more decent rubber and it’ll be just as good if not better. But then it comes back to the price tag thing. The XR6 Sprint was cheaper so u can just splash more money on it to be quicker if that’s what u want but personally I wouldn’t. They’re becoming quite pricy recently, especially stock ones including F6s because people have finally released how good they were. But the fact that it wasn’t on this list and the plastic pig was, is a bit silly. This list could've been improved on a lot. Btw the XR6 Sprint sold out quicker than the GT-F. Now that shows how good it truely was.

@@smartey2612 agree with that.

my only disagreement is the 2006 Club Sport, i would have put the 2006 HSV GTO. i might be a bit biased as i bought build No 837 brand new for $76.300 and no amount of money could get me to part with it. Like the WZ it will become an absolute classic..

Had to upgrade the VK 3.3 black engines re fuel regs and the Buick v6 didn’t fit because it was two high in the engine bay the prototypes had a bonnet bulge,and as they had a joint venture with Nissan with the LB/LC Astra they could import the engines through their joint venture and as it was the same dimensions as the 3.3ltr and only had to do engine mounts and manifolds.
