I watched an online talk in 2021 and Sarah Waters said she was working on a book set in the 1950s and it was a gothic family drama... but that was 3 years ago aha.

I have GOT to read more Sarah Waters. She's such an intriguing author. The Paying Guests was actually the first book of hers I read. I forgot it was so long because I devoured it!

Donna Tart was number one on my mental list during your intro! I really enjoy the audiobooks for TSH and The Goldfinch. I’ve not read The Little Friend yet, I was really apprehensive as reviews were saying it wasn’t as good.

I think it's just that The Secret History was much more tautly plotted so people were gutted when her next book was so slow moving. I still really enjoyed it.

Maria McCann! Her first book, As Meat Loves Salt, is one of my all-time favorites, and her others are great too. She's another author who takes long periods between books.

I would be extatic for new books by Miriam Toews, Yaa Gyasi, and Linda Olsson. Many of my go-to authors have released books this year or the previous one, so I'm lucky😊! From your list, I have read and loved Song for Issey Bradley and The Little Friend.

This was such a great video idea! I have so many books to read that I haven't allowed myself to get excited about new releases. However I do wonder from time to time if Gillian Flynn will publish another novel. Thank you for all these great recommendations ❤

I’m obsessed with reading anything by Birmingham authors. I feel that, for our size, we are a much maligned or ignored part of the county, so I still get a little buzz when I see somewhere I recognise in print. Therefore, I’m always on the lookout for a new Kit de Waal or Catherine O’Flynn.

I loved My Name is Leon but didn't enjoy The Trick to Time quite as much. I'll definitely still pick up whatever she brings out next. I haven't read any Catherine O'Flynn. It looks like she has a few books so which would you recommend to start with?

@ What Was Lost was the one that won the awards, but my favourite is Mr Lynch’s Holiday. They’re all great though, you can’t go wrong.

Great video! I had somehow forgotten about English Animals over the years and this made me want to reread it. The author I’m eagerly awaiting a new novel from is Emily Ruskovich. I remember when she won that really big Irish book prize a few years ago that she said in an interview then that she had one in the works and it sounded really good. But I haven't heard anything about it since

Ohhh, yes! No Idea how I missed Emily Ruskovich! I loved Idaho and always look to see if she has a new book out. In the meantime I need to reread Idaho.

Loved Sarah Waters and Cary’s Bray, but wasn’t as keen on either one’s last book, I definitely want more from both. Also the rumours the Robin Hobb is writing a new book with Bee as the main character.
@MercysBookishMusings
@MercysBookishMusings Ай бұрын
That's a shame. Hopefully their next books work more for you. Hmmm, I did wonder if Robin Hobb would do that. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it as I didn't love the last trilogy even through I adore Fitz. I found them very repetitive like she didn't trust us as readers at all.

What a great video! I loved many of the books (and authors) you featured, including Donna Tartt, English Animals, A Place For Us, Carys Bray’s books (but i haven’t yet read When the Lights Go Out), Good Talk, Tayari Jones…and I’ll plan to pick up several others you mentioned. I have never read Sarah Waters and I currently have Fingersmith and The Little Stranger out from the library. I hope to get to one by the end of the year! I loved Red Clocks by Leni Zumas years ago and I’ve been waiting and waiting to hear that she’s come out with something new. I’m also a huge Gillian Flynn fan, and I excitedly anticipate the day she releases a new book!

We have similar reading taste then :) Sarah Waters is perfect for the cosier, darker months so I'd definitely pick one up soon if you live in the northern hemisphere. I really enjoyed Red Clocks too :)

Before watching your video, I immediately thought of Donna Tartt😂....must check out Sarah Waters. Would love some new releases from classic russian literature, sadly these guys are long dead😅. I still have german writer Rocko Schamoni, who has new stuff ready every couple of years or so😊. His books have not been translated as far as I know...a pity

I'm so happy your favourite Sarah Waters book is The Little Stranger, it's mine too, a lot of people seem to like it the least. It would be great to have a new book from her but she's set a high bar for herself and perhaps the creative juices don't flow as they used to? I've never read The Secret History, it's been on my TBR list for ages, as have The Goldfinch and The Little Friend. I'm in a bit of a reading slump at tgevmonent, triggered by Kate Atkinson's Death at the Sign of the Rook, which after a promising start became a real slog to get through.

Yes, I prefer her books set in the 20th century but I know most people prefer her victorian novels. Yeah, the pressure must be so high for her! Urgh, I hate when a book becomes a slog after starting off strong!
