Hey Kayla. Long term subscriber but quiet lurker here. I’ve been watching your videos since the first closet unhaul & love your content. I’ve been a big reader my entire life & worked in the book industry for over 20 years, so have read a wide variety of genres. However, my favourite genre is romance. And I’ve been debating for quite some time whether I should comment about the romance books you have been reading and finding lacking. I personally find that so much of the modern romance genre today is not really “romance”. I began reading romances during the height of the romance boom of the 1990s to early 2000s. The romance books now are what we called “chick lit fiction” & I found very uninspiring. During this video, there was a romance book called Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh who is a New Zealander writer. That romance book series “The Psy-Changling” series is one of my favourites. It has a combination of romance & fantasy that you may just love. If you are ever interested in trying the series, the first book is Slave to Sensation. I reread this one at least once a year. It’s one of my comfort reads. I hope that someday, not even for a video, you may pick it up & try it. Singh also writes very good mystery/thrillers if you don’t fancy her romance. Just wanted to see if you may like to try a different slant on romance. Keep up the great content!
@robyntotheTeeАй бұрын
I agree that romance today is more chick lit. I haven't read a ton of romance, but I definitely read a few Danielle Steele back in the 90s. Also, I'm Elizabeth Lowell and Judith McNaught had a chokehold on romance. I have been trying to get a few booktubers to read a couple of Judith McNaught books - Paradise, and then Perfect - but haven't had any takers yet. Those books are so good, a little dated, but still so good. Another author is Iris Johansen. And she gets into some paranormal stuff, too, I believe. I really would love Kayla or someone to read some of these older romance books.
@pobie1162Ай бұрын
@ YES! I used to love Iris Johansen, Elizabeth Lowell, Linda Howard, Julie Garwood & Jayne Ann Krentz! Unfortunately they specialized in more of the historical romances, which I’m not sure Kayla would like, but even their contemporary romances might be a gateway romance for her too!

A few notes about Angela Liddon/Oh She Glows: She released at least two more books after the first one. If she has release any in the last few years, I’m unaware of it. The second book was probably my favourite. During COVID she came out as pro Trucker Convoy because she “wanted to see her children smile in public” or some shit. I unfollowed her after that. Part of the “dryness” of 2014 vegan food was the fact that the no oil/no salt version of veganism was going HARD. Went along with the high raw/raw till 4 movement. Thanks Freelee. The savoury oatmeal recipe in the first book is still a go-to recipe for me.

Well, this was so so enjoyable! I think it's really interesting how we went from the almost naked people on the cover to illustrated, cutesy when it comes to romance, when the smuttiness level of them stayed the same. The idea for Horrostör is really cool, reminded me of an event that ikea did years ago where they invited influencers to sleep in a store for a night, The sorry girls vlogged it.
@LoveShannonАй бұрын
The thing about the Goodreads awards is that you can't put any stock in the votes at all. I would feel very comfortable betting everything I have on the idea that there is not a single person who votes who has read all the books in the category they are voting on. Basically, it's a bunch of people voting on the one book they read or even more likely the one book they have heard of but not read. Book awareness is what you get from those awards, not book quality. It's a better judge of which book had the best promotional team really.

This is a fun idea! I clicked through a few months ago and had a chuckle at the books that were popular then that have disappeared, and other ones that were not even in the top 3 that have had some staying power over the years. It's also neat to see books on these lists boomerang back thanks to tiktok reviving some old books.

I love middle grade and miss seeing the finalists. When you were talking about romance being a category that has seen such an increase in diversity over the past decade, I’d argue that middle grade is at the top of that list. And with so many American libraries facing book bans and restrictions, having a place for parents and educators to see those impactful books is so important ❤

I actually didn't know there was a business section in Goodreads 10 years ago. When I first saw Girlboss, it took me back but like you said, this book was for its time. The other reason why I found the category interesting was Ryan Holiday's book being so low in the polls. I actually picked up his 10th anniversary book (not reading the first version) and would say it's refreshing to see someone actually go back, revise and freshen up something that's been out for so long.

Yes, it's extremely annoying. If you've marked the paperback as read and they show the hardcover in one of their lists, it doesn't show as read. But if you click the book, the book page is in the format you've chosen and shows as read.
