Күн бұрын

If the New York Mets decide to trade for a bat at the deadline, who most fits their needs on the market?
Host Ryan Finkelstein identifies three types of trades the Mets could make for an outfielder at the deadline.
1. Surprising Blockbuster
2. In-Division Trade
3. Bringing Back a Former Met
Could the Mets swing a deal for a star bat like Luis Robert, or Randy Arozarena?
Would the Miami Marlins or Washington Nationals trade one of their outfielders to the Mets?
Or could the Mets reunite with a former fan favorite like Mark Canha or Michael Conforto?

Because he’s going to be 37 years old, can only DH, and he’s tailed off quite a bit the last month or so. He’s a high-whiff, high-chase guy whose bat is likely to slow down, if it hasn’t already. If he’s willing to take a deal similar to the one he’s on now, maybe you consider it if you don’t have other options, but it’s not ideal. You don’t sign guys based on what they have done, but on what they’re likely to do going forward.

Not in my book! Get rid of Alonso since he's going to be a free agent anyway otherwise we won't get anything of value in return. The Mets have the money to resign him later when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Overall, the Mets just don't have the talent to rise above playing 500 this year. Trade those players who still have some value and get some young players in return.

Man, there are some bad takes in the comment section. Jeff’s quality of contact the past few weeks has gone back to what it was at his best. He might be coming around, and Iglesias’s numbers are going to regress. You’re not going to replace Pete’s production at this point in the season (the offseason may be a different story). Sure, he’s having a down year, but a ~120 wRC+ with his kind of power isn’t exactly available on the waiver wire. Before clamoring for JDM to be re-signed, remember he’ll be 37 next year, has been bad for several weeks now, his already bad whiff and chase rates are likely to only get worse as his bat slows, and most importantly, the offseason is still a few months away. As far as buying or selling, they’re going to see where they are in ~10 days. If they begin the second half on a slide, then yeah, they might sell, because the second-half schedule is much tougher than what it has been during the hot streak. But if they’re still in it, I’ve come around to the idea that, while being massive buyers might not make sense (maybe unless it’s for a top-flight starting pitcher), you never know what the future will bring, so remaining competitive makes sense. They might be able to acquire some minor league depth, but no one is parting with top prospects for, like, Luis Severino and his sub-10% K-BB (my goodness, have fans overrated him).

Agreed. His quality of contact has dramatically improved the past few weeks. His July xBA is .336, his xwOBA is .352, his hard-hit rate is 45% (double what it was in June), his launch angle is down to 12 degrees (a good thing in Jeff’s case; more line drives and fewer lazy fly balls and popups), and his average EV is up 2mph to 89.7mph. If he’s figured out his swing mechanics, that could be huge heading into August and September.

@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar Ай бұрын
@@johncummings5350 Just to clarify, I was talking about McNeil. I did make a mistake when looking into his underlying metrics (I erroneously overstated them), but his quality of contact this month has been better than it has been all year, by a pretty substantial margin: xBA of .284, 43.3% hard-hit rate (2nd best monthly HH% of his career), avg EV up, pull rate up (contrary to popular belief, Jeff gets better results when he pulls the ball), etc. His line drive rate is still a little too low, but it’s getting better, so maybe he’s starting to find his swing mechanics again. But yeah, I agree that his trade value is limited, and the Mets would almost certainly have to eat his salary to move him, so given that he really has been hitting the ball better recently, they’re probably better off seeing if he’s actually returning to form. If he is, that would be really helpful, because RF is a little bit of an issue with Marte out, plus Iglesias probably isn’t going to hit .380 with a .999 OPS the rest of the year 😂. Even just getting league-average production from McNeil would be helpful.

We a 26:53 26:53 re contenders for a wildcard spot right now but the Mets needs some pieces for get more chances to reach that goal..1-They needs to trade Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeill. Alonso is getting worse with men on base, low ave and his agent wants more money than Freeman and Olson, more better players that him..Mcneill is batting around Mendoza line 214 ave all season and getting more playing time than Iglesias who is "Hot" (total unexplained for all the Mets fans) Give Vientos the 1B job for now and the future and bring Acuña to manage 2B with Iglesias.2- The Mets needs a "lefty" bat outfielder that produce, especially with men on base..Jessy Winkler is the right guy. He is a productive bat and can play 1B also..Taylor or Marte can play against lefties.Marte has knees problem so his potencial (steal bases) is diminished. Immediately DFA to DJ Stewart. He is "horrible". I don't understand how is in the roster right now..We don't need Gamel outfielder from the bench DFA him too. Bring Baty one more time, he is very young and some players needs some playing time to be successful, give him another chance.3-.Is necessary to get 2 decent relievers at the trading deadline. DFA Ottavino and Houser or try to trade both before. Also bring Megill to the bullpen and convert him a reliever like his brother, he will be ok in that role. With those changes and adjustments my modest opinion the Mets can improve the chances to fight for a wildcard spot until the season ends..Lineup: 1-Lindor SS 2-Nimmo LF 3-Martinez DH 4-Winkler RF 5- Vientos 1B 6-Baty 3B 7-AlvarezC 8- Iglesias-Acuña 2B 9-Badder CF Against Lefties 1-Lindor SS 2-Nimmo LF 3-JD Martinez DH 4-Vientos 1B 5-Alvarez C 6-Marte or Taylor RF 7- Iglesias 3B 8-Badder CF 9-Acuña 2B..Done..

I honestly believe he's drained the energy with poor at bats and inability to hit in key situations. He may someday become a good bat but that's his only upside. @@johncummings5350This is just silly. The guy was, what, a top 30 prospect in MLB like a year ago? It took Vientos a while to figure it out; no reason Baty can’t do the same. @@johncummings5350 Pitching in AAA is so much worse than in MLB, it’s not even funny, which is why there seem to be more guys than ever who tear up AAA and then really struggle in the bigs. Honestly, if the Mets were out of the race, I think Baty would still be on the MLB roster, because his best chance of succeeding at the MLB level is to get reps at the MLB level. If the Mets do fall out of the race, I imagine he’ll get called up fairly quickly. Even if they want to trade him, he’s not going to build any value at AAA at this point in his career. It’s also worth pointing out that he got sent down before the Mets got hot, and it’s entirely possible that the team’s success, the influence of vets like JDM, etc. might have helped him improve, as has happened with Vientos. Long term. I’m still a teeny bit skeptical of Vientos because of all the chase, and especially the in-zone swing-and-miss, but at least so far, he’s finally showing (at the big league level) that he can do enough damage when he does make contact to mitigate the lack of contact. Baty still has a better hit tool than Vientos, and he has plus power, so unless Brett shows a clear decline in underlying skills, the club should be similarly patient with him, and I think they will be. It’s way too soon to give up on a guy with plus contact and power, and much-improved defense, who was considered one of the top prospects in baseball pretty recently. The Phillies didn’t give up on Alec Bohm, and are reaping the benefits. The Mets shouldn’t give up on Brett Baty, either.

Should always be looking to fill holes and this team currently has an outfield that doesn't hit lefties nearly as well as righties, at least until Marte gets back, and I'm not convinced a Starling Marte coming back from injury will be nearly as effective compared to the numbers he put up prior to getting hurt. If trading for Mark Canha drops the return for Detroit on relief pitching you take that. Did you even watch the video? Half the proposed trades are to teams that have desirable relief pitching. The biggest advantage the Mets have over other teams is the ability to take on the remainder of contracts to reduce the overall return going back. The Mets need to save their prospects every chance they get and double dipping in this manner is one of the most efficient ways to do it.

Do you seriously think there’s a universe in which Pete Alonso accepts a one-year deal? Also, Martinez is going to be 37, has been bad for about a month now, tons of whiff and chase, and is only going to slow down. If he has a good second half, and _he’s_ willing to take another one-year deal, then maybe, but if there are better options, you explore those first.

The Mets need to continue to move forward and away from the past... guys like former Mets Conforto/Canha are not going to help them at this stage. They need to get younger, not older. They also need to rid themselves of players who have seen better days. McNeil and Diekman definitely need to go! If they can't improve on their sub 500 win/loss record, I would continue the youth movement project and also get rid of Alonso, Ottavino, Bader and yes, even J.D. Martinez. You can always try to resign Alonso when he's a free agent. And if he decides he doesn't want to come back, then so what? It's not like he's a bona fide All Star at his position. And while he can hit homeruns and produce RBIs... he's never going to be a .300 hitter... much like your average 1st baseman these days...

They don't need Pillar.....i simply don't see him adding anything meaningful to the roster. There's no way they consider Pham after his comments.... regardless of the validity of those comments. TOMMY PHAN talked a lot of trash against the METS and he's not a good clubhouse guy.

Canha is having a down year but he wouldn’t be the worst 4th or 5th outfielder to have. He’s a veteran who wouldn’t cost much and is familiar with the clubhouse. He provided a spark to Milwaukee down the stretch last year, maybe he could do the same for us this year.

WINKER is not a good fit. The METS have too many lefthanded hitter.

Mets need to sell at the deadline. This team is not constructed to be champion. Build the farm and get set up for sustained success.

Sell who? Youre getting nothing for Mcniel, Alonso or Martinez not to mention we are above 500 in a wildcard spot. The spot we are in is the pieces that have value we could move it would be minimal returns and the team has performed well enough to make a playoff run. Better to add a few small pieces and play it out

I wouldn’t make a blockbuster trade but adding a few bullpen arms and a few more quality platoon pieces could get us over the hump to stay over the other wild card teams and trust our farm system and spending power going forward

Who you trading for that's gonna get you valuable return as the farm is concerned the farm is loaded and we are not gonna rebuild for 2 years no way ,

@@TheAvargas687 That's the question for buying at the deadline. Who are you trading for that's going to allow the Mets to even compete with the Filthies (and their EIGHT all-stars)? How much of that loaded farm system are you going to waste in trades that allow us to get swept by the Dodgers.

@duffydier so you wanna suck for two more years is that what your saying ' nobody is giving u a top player for severino ' martinez ' Bader ' quintana ' if you need to move a top prospect fir a good reliever or pitcher sure ' but to trade everyone is ridiculous ' even the owner said we're not tanking ' now if they go on a 8 game loosing streak and they are a lot of games out then sure ' but not while we are this close
