Jnanendra Prasad Goswami was born on December 25th, 1902. He is an evocative name in the music world of Bengal. A renowned exponent of the Bishnupur Gharana, Goswami added his genius to the idiom of this gharana, and evolved a style all his own. A born singer, he drew heavily on the heritage of the family he was born into. His father was Bipin Chandra, a skilled esraj player but it was his uncle, Radhika Prasad Goswami, a great vocalist of his times, who took on the task of training his young nephew. Goswami subsequently trained under stalwarts such as Girija Shankar Chakrabarty and Ustad Faiyaz Khan.

Jnanendra Prasad Goswami or Jnan Gosain as he was fondly known, had an unique gayaki. He was like none other. But that remains true for the other stalwarts of that time - Bhishmadev Chattopadhyay, Tarapada Chakraborty, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan - to name only but a few. Those were the days!
