I have quite a few games from this list: White Castle, Darwin's Journey, Earth, Hegemony, Nucleum and Voidefall. Im very tempted by GWT New Zeland.. About Darwins Journey, there is definetely freshness and theme in the game! For example the seals on workers are a pretty novel mechanic.

This was a super video, possibly the top 10 of the year. 😉. The only game I played on this list was earth and it was my top game for 2023. I may have backed it on Kickstarter because of Paul's video, if that came first. My tastes skew heavier than general public, but lighter than most other Patreon supporters, so I'm only interested in two other games on the list: World Wonders, and would buy that if I like it, and Sky team, which sounds awesome, but I rarely play at two players.

Paul, first thanks for teaching me how to play Voidfall and give a playthrough. It is a great game I love it. Something that bothers me with "Deterministic Combat" though. If the WWII Battle of Midway had been deterministic, then the Japanese would have won (having four CVs to the American's three, and one of those already damaged from the Coral Sea) I think this was demonstrated in an old school game by "Battle Line" (and later "Avalon Hill") called Flat Top. It too had deterministic combat, but it also had hidden movement.

I totally get that deterministic combat is "unrealistic", but I prefer it in games like this.

@GamingRulesVideos Funny you should mention Voidfall making it to your top 3 because it's jumped into mine as well! We've got different #1 and #2s but I still rate yours very highly! We definitely differ on feeling Voidfall replaces Eclipse and TI4! I do love the deterministic puzzley nature of Voidfall, but it's nice to have TI4 and Eclipse as other sides to that. Eclipse has the eXplore that's missing from Voidfall and I quite enjoy research and bolting stuff to my ship designs. TI4 has the fun of each species having a very different feel to it as well as the political side and the constant tension of the map presence. Plus it's fun to chuck some dice every now and then whilst a bunch of ships explode 😄 Wish I'd been able to play Nucleum. From the mechanisms I'm confident I'll enjoy it. Hopefully this year it will happen! I think New Zealand is my favourite GWT for a lot of the reasons talked about it. It feels like there are a greater amount of buttons and levers to press which suits my style of being an explorative gamer who enjoys trying stuff out and seeing what happens 🙂 Great video! And Luke was surprisingly restrained here 😉

The Ship design part of Eclipse is amazing. No game has done it better. However, after many plays of it, I got tired of it just boiling down to dice rolls.

The design/decision space of the game is amazing and provides an excellent euro optimization puzzle that feels like you are leading an epic space empire! Would also love to be able to play Hegemony but don't have a group that would be interested and feel like the group interaction is likely a huge part of the fun. Simulation of socio-economic dynamics is a theme I find incredibly interesting and I think it would probably give Voidfall a run for #1 on my list. It’s not unthematic you can’t communicate, because quite often you don’t have the time, you have to split responsibilities and your communication has to be the most effective you can. Not being able to communicate verbally but instead being forced to take responsibility and communicate through dice placement is actually a really good representation of the communication method used between pilot and copilot.

Paul and Luke, great job. I love the respectful banter between the two of you. Your opinions are valid and noteworthy to anyone who is deciding any of these games of 2023 One question for Luke. Yet, I enjoy solving the riddles and trying to make the best decisions with what the crisis board deals me. Love the channel Paul. Keep up the great work. Voidfall is one of my favourites, but I’m not sure that the wildest factions are necessarily the most fun or balanced (often they are actually weaker). I’d choose a map that rewards player combat, and maybe stick to the more basic factions. Depending on techs on offer, turn order can matter with more than two. So two might be the nicest player count, also to play faster.

I think the idea behind the limit on communication in Sky Team is that decisions have to be made very quickly when landing a plane. There is communication allowed but only in intervals (every 1000 feet of descent)
@GamingRulesVideos9 ай бұрын
That makes sense. Still seems a bit weird though, but I get it that games sometimes need this to work.
@laurenceparsons78949 ай бұрын
I came here to make this exact comment. You are communicating and planning, but the turns take ‘mere seconds’ to perform all your actions and by the time you’ve adjusted speed, fuel, flaps, undercarriage, etc, the plane has moved on and the airport is closer. I find it to be quite a tense game as you want to manage your dice well and not let your partner down, but having to anticipate exactly how much to adjust each control is what makes this game good.

Finished video...whew: ok, GWT New Zealand is just simply the best version of GWT. Completely replace the 2nd edition for me. I'll be curious what the masses think after a few years of Nucleum. It was good and I'd play it again, but it is not the Barrage or Brass Birmingham it gets compared to. Darwin's Journey was ok, I think I side with Luke on that one. Haven't been able to play Voidfall yet. Earth is fantastic and I'm looking forward to seeing the expansion!
@fireshrine779 ай бұрын
Despite all my initial reservations, I totally agree with Paul; Voidfall has undoubtedly been my top game of 2023 and automatically secures a spot in my top three. However, Luke is correct about the lengthy setup and teardown time for the game. Given my busy schedule, it's challenging to find the time to play Voidfall. In fact, I've had to use my annual leave just to get a chance to play it.
@thehandoflenin9 ай бұрын
I think this is why I would not have Voidfall in my top games of 2023. For me a big part of any top 10 is a game you are actually going to play and with my gaming group I’d struggle to get Voidfall to the table. Sold TI4 because it just sat there.
@fireshrine779 ай бұрын
@@thehandoflenin That's fair enough but I am certain that you will find it easier to table Voidfall than TI4, which is a different beast. The difference is that I can easily find players to play VF with me if I have the time for it. I have so far played the game 3 times since I unboxed it in November. Personally, it's feat considering how time poor I am.
@thehandoflenin9 ай бұрын
Thanks for that... what do you think of the deterministic battle play? I'm not sure I'd like this too much.
@fireshrine779 ай бұрын
@@thehandoflenin This is an interesting topic. If Voidfall was a combat, area domination game then I would say the deterministic battle is horrible. Fortunately, Voidfall is a Euro and how I see the battles is as if it was an obstruction to progress further. So if I looked at the entire game as a whole, it makes perfect sense. From acquiring Technologies, to converting resources to deploy fleets (which are resources on its own) gels so well. Most naysayers would just look at the combat bit and make a judgement that VF is just bad. So it really depends on what you expect VF to be. It's not in the same genure and TI4 or Eclipse which people compares VF to. Hope this makes sense to you.

I played Hegemony with my marxist friends and we couldn't get on with the theme. It felt much too conservative and conveniently blind to certain political interactions. I hope people know its just a game and don't apply the theme too seriously to their lives. Voidfall, on the other hand, is amazing. The icons are not an issue and the tech setup is greatly reduced by labeling the house trays. STILL, the setup is very long. On the more complex houses & scenarios, playing solo has sometimes put me at my brain burning limit. Sometimes it feels too complicated, but if I have a nice chunk of time and have managed to get all my errands done, this is my current favorite puzzle to swim in. There's also an online implementation of the solo mode that keeps me company in the interim. I've played a few multiplayer sessions and it works well as a heavy euro.

@@babydemon90 That is the idea. The reality is that if I was doing this on my own, it simply wouldn't have got done as I would have spent a day prepping for it and the heavily editing what I filmed. With this, I did a lot less prep (being ill didn't help), and very little editing :)

Haha. The hate for barrage I understand to some extent. I’m not an expert at all. But the example of getting your concrete mixers back in three turns is not about experience of the game. That’s just really bad playing. It’s not that hard to get your concrete mixers back. The times I’ve played it I would get the wheeled turned completely around multiple times. The first round or two is harder but after that you should easily be spinning that wheel for fun. Yes it’s punishing. But it’s all open info. Not like brass. After your first game you should know what not to do. And really play into your faction and your special abilities. But yeah don’t play with experienced players. You will get destroyed. But that’s kinda general. 😊

I don't hate it. I think it is a VERY good game. I just can't get it to click for me.

A 5 is an average game, but with so many 8+ games out there why even bother with average. In a world of so many great games, average is terrible. Anything under a 7.5 will immediately leave my collection if it even gets a look in.

1:30 World Wonders is published by MeepleBR, they are the original creators of the game, not Arcane Wonders. Arcane Wonders is just doing the US release.

Thanks for letting me know. I did not know that. I only have a working relationship with Arcane Wonders.

Just call it your top 10 games played in 2023. No need for half year wait. You cannot possible have played all releases of 2023 anyway 😂
@GamingRulesVideos8 ай бұрын
I've seriously considered doing that. The problem with that is that if I play, for example, Mage Knight in a year, it will be in my Top 10, which will confuse people. So it needs to be "games released in 2023". The reason I wait is that many of the 2023 games I have only played once, which is nowehere near enough to properly evaluate them. Doesn't stop everyone else doing it, but I don't feel comfortable with that.

Luke was nice 😮 jk. I will have to try nucleum people in my fb group had said if you don’t like barrage you won’t like nucleum so I skipped it (cause I actively hate barrage)

They are very wrong. I don't like Barrage and love Nucleum.

Have you tried Barrage with all the expansion content. I hated the base game, but added in the expansion content and loved that you feel like you actually have some good options.

@@Spankatank. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and not everyone likes every content creator. There are for example, some content creators I cannot stand to watch, so any video with them in I will avoid, even if they are a guest on one of my favourite channels :) I was actually a bit worried Luke was going to be massively negative in this video, but I thought it worked well.
