People forget about her but she didn’t have nearly as many match wins in 2019 and 2021 seasons as any of these players did in a career. She probably could be 1 if she didn’t retire, which while it is her choice, I genuinely think she is making a huge mistake.

I think Sharapova being so successful on clay is one of the most fascinating player developments of all time. I don't think anyone prior to 2010 would have predicted that she would be an absolute beast on clay later in her career. What a queen 👑

I know, right? She used to feel like a "cow on ice", then went on to become a queen of clay. It's likely because her shoulder operations and continuous injuries impacted her serve consistency, so she was forced to improve her return of serve, drop shot, slice, swinging volleys and movement to compensate for the double faults. What a queen indeed!

Maria absolutely ruled on clay. I still think its one of the best stories in tennis how she was so bad and hated the clay in the beginning of her career. She honestly does not have a typical clay game. She only ever lost to Serena but Maria beat everyone who beat Serena and even has never been defeated by players who have beaten Serena more than once. Maria absolutely RULED over Simona Halep and Simo is considered one of the best on clay to date. It took a very special performance to beat Maria when she was healthy on clay.

Queen Maria, Slayed the clay for quite some time! So impressive ! Maria really changed her game and worked hard to perform well on clay! Very inspiring to any tennis player that dislike a surface, Maria proved that anything can be done with hard work and determination

The two "What Ifs" I always wonder about clay since 2010 are: 1. What if Elena Dementieva didn't have the calf tear in the 2010 French Open. Would she have gone on to finally win that elusive Grand Slam? 2. There's no real track record for this one, but what if Kiki Bertens hadn't had to retire with illness in the second round of the 2019 French Open. She was playing really well on clay that season, could she have gone all the way?

Two very good what if‘s, but I don’t believe Dementieva would have beaten Stosur And it’s questionable whether or not she would’ve beaten Schiavone even healthy At least in that tournament when Schiavone was playing out of her mind I totally agree with you it was really sad that Kiki Bertens was one of the top players in the world going into the 2019 French Open and it got ruined for her. But I was even more pissed at Johanna Konta blowing that lead in both sets of the semifinal

@@piper998877 hrm, a very good debate the 'what if' turning points. Probably the biggest one in history is Federer's break point down 3rd set against TOmmy Haas, French Open 2009. Then again, either of the 2010 and 2011 USO SFs Fed/Novak would count. Roddick's botching the 6-2 lead in the TB 2009 WImbledon. Biggest women's one I can think of off the top of my head is Serena JUST making the shot break point down catching the edge of both lines against DEmentieva 2009.

Honestly RG didn’t really have a real queen on this surface until now! I do think Swiatek is shaping up to be a real deal, but until she wins 3 or 4 French Opens and wins Madrid and Rome at least three times each it’s probably too premature to predict! Justine Henin was women’s tour “last real queen”, ever since 2008 female tour didn’t have clay queen!

Serena: RG Champion 2013&2015, Finalist 2016, Madrid Champion 2012&2013, Rome Champion 2013, 2014&2016 Sharapova: RG Champion 2012&2014, Finalist 2013, Semifinalist 2011, Madrid Champion 2014, Finalist 2013, Rome Champion 2011,2012 &2015. Seems Sharapova is little bit more stable on clay, although Serena has a perfect clay court season in 2013 without losing a clay court match that year.

As for this list i don’t think it’s appropriate to put anyone but those, who actually did win RG during this period here! All the runner-ups and semi-finalists, that are here shouldn’t really be here! Everyone of those, who ended up winning RG could be labeled as “clay queen” at least for one season, because really when you think about it it is the grand prize and anyone who gets her hands on it is the queen of the hill!

For me, Halep is number one : Rg winner 2018, RG finalist 2014-2017, Madrid champion 2016-2017, Roma champion 2020, Madrid finalist 2013 and Roma finalist 2018. Currently, when you hear "clay", you think Halep ( and Iga ) Do you want more ?

Serena definitely was better than Sharapova on clay. She won more French Opens, more Masters series on clay, more clay tournaments overall, and Sharapova lost to her every time they played on clay.

That's not true. Both Maria & Serena have both won the career Grand Slam, the only two to have done it on the women's side in the last near 30 years. So they have both conquered all surfaces.
