I remember I showed my father the Guns cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door, and he had this just cringing, disappointed look on his face, like it was genuinely the most uncomfortable thing he'd ever experienced. And it probably was, he was big into Bob Dylan. I got him Dylan's album Tempest, he always said he didn't need christmas presents from us and told me to just get him chocolate, but I always got him something. I don't regret it, he loved that album, and he loved the new Deep Purple too. But just in 2015, he passed, and I realised why he always said not to get him christmas presents. His heart was failing. I'm glad I spent some time with him before that. Remember dudes, you gotta spend time with your elders, before it's too late. The same with Bob Dylan's Knocking On Heaven's Door over GnR, especially when you see the use of this song in Peckinpah's Pat Garret & Billy the Kid (probably the best and most beautiful scene in the film.) I think the thing with Cash's cover is that: One, it's Johnny *FREAKING* Cash. Two, the song was already really good before Cash covered it. Three, I thoroughly believe he knew that he was close to dying, and he put that soul and feeling into the recording. Four, the points you made about the speed and volume staying consistent. And five, Cash was such an intimate acoustic guitar player for what he played, in that he made people feel like they were the ones in the song, that having it be mainly acoustic driven gave it (to me) a real universal feeling to the song. TLDR: Cash was great, the song was great, and the two put together lead to the best cover in all of rock.

As far as I know, the video for Hurt was one of the last things Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash were in together. From what I understand the museum they filmed in has since burned down, just to add an even sadder touch to something already so sad. When June passed, Johnny was not long in following. Yes, you can argue he was older when he died, this is true, but you cannot convince me that he died from anything other than a broken heart.
@bennlloyd123 жыл бұрын
Johnny's son and daughter have spoken on his and June's death, they were pretty much agreed that although Johnny was in really poor health, he would not let go because June was still alive. They believe June passed first to allow Johnny to follow and have peace, so you're not far wrong! 👍

Devo's Satisfaction actually sounds the part of an un-ironic delivery (and Devo usually LIVES in a zone of hyper-irony) of those lyrics. The Rolling Stones' version? Unless the delivery IS supposed to be ironic, I never quite got it. If the delivery wasn't supposed to be ironic, its a good taste of The Stones musicianship, but that's about it. They're singing from the perspective of a guy who's desperate for either sex or general contentment and the singer sounds more content than they do on Brown Sugar or Sympathy for the Devil.

This was actually a really good list. Great choices.... umm.. well... Maybe except for #10. Personally, I can only take so much of Axle's nasally "awo, awo, awo awo awo"

Everytime I listen to Johnny Cash's version of Hurt, i cry. When i listen to NIN's version, it makes me feel nostalgic and sad. Don't know why, but that's true : it brings you different feelings although that's the same song. It seems like their way of singing it brings you mixed feelings.

I feel like its because in Johnny's version its a man basically putting it out there knowing his life is done that he wont be with us much longer. where I feel like the NIN version is almost like an apology for what has been done. I could be totally wrong here as im not much of an interpreter but its just how the two songs feel to me.

Pretty good list. Also, I liked the Alien Ant Farm cover of "Smooth Criminal", but even I don't think it's good enough to be on a countdown list.

Even if the song wasn't disliked (?) by the host, I think that song can't meet the "rock song - rock cover" rule.

Van Halen covering the Kinks “You Really Got Me” is obviously THE most epic cover in rock n roll history! NO comparison!

I had The Kinks One For the Road, and you could hear Van Halen's influence on how they played it live.

Seether's cover of Careless Whisper should definitely have been on this list. Disturbed's cover should have been higher.

That’s great too, I love how Shaun Morgan uses guitar to cover the saxophone parts in the original.

The Ataris cover of Don Henleys "Boys of Summer," should be on this list.
