... Helo Monsieur, I am french and rather "very" old, I am a big fan (reader) of the "Metal Archives" (yes it smells very strong "The Gatekeepers" lol), but when you are searching about a MetalCore band, NuMetal band, DeathcoreMetal, and some others in the genre, you'll find nobody because they aren't Metal bands (search Korn, SOAD or Linkin Park for ex., you'll never find them)... Bring me the Horison and the like, ha ha ha how I hate those "Tik Tok" bands ... !!! It's for children or young girls !!! Ok I know a lot of poeple will hate me or just ignore me, but is it a problem ? No ... alot of poeple young or old knows what is good Metal Music and that's enough for me !!! Ok you've done a good job in general, greetings !!! Just 2 bands I would have heard about them are Ministry in the Indus. genre and My Dying Bride in the Doom/Goth genre, both are very well known bands in their genre (I love them alot as I love Type O Negative or Rammstein ^^) ... So good job man, Salut !!!

@@SheogorathReacts I still think КоЯп is the popular choice. For me LINKIN PARK sound is just so broad that I feel like a lot of people don’t associate them with the genre to begin with. With КоЯп they have a South Park episode, they just released a Adidas press run and all the shoes sold out almost instantly. They play narcissistic cannibals at amusement parks. And people remember that band because of the simple name. There’s definitely a case to be made for a lot of other bands like Limp Bizkit and slipknot. I don’t know if there’s a big four for numetal but those four bands definitely are it. I just think when people think of the genre, their mind doesn’t go to LINKIN PARK but again this could just be a me thing and I fully acknowledge that

Yeah, I think Darkthrone would probably be a really good pick for most popular black metal band. Personally I'd probably say: Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, Satyricon or Dimmu Borgir in terms of names people know if I had to throw a few more names out there. Satyricon has charted in the Nordics several times, reaching number 1 even, and have been around since the early-mid 90s to boot.

I would've actually gone with korn for nu metal as they essentially defined what metal was for the entire 90s and was still huge throughout the 2000s, but I agree there really isn't a "correct" answer. For industrial, even outside of the controversies and stunts, you still regularly hear his cover of sweet dreams in mainstream Hollywood movies and TV shows almost 30 years later. The beautiful people is also played regularly on the radio and occasionally in TV shows as well. So I'd give him the inch for industrial's most well known over the others (though just an inch).

Combining gothic and doom feels like a cop-out, Candlemass and Sleep (who are probably the biggest doom bands) do not have much stylistic overlap with gothic metal other than "slow and atmospheric" (which I'd argue their atmospheres are substantially different). Doom's distinction from gothic metal becomes more apparent when you consider bands like Solitude Aeturnus, Pentagram, Cirith Ungol, Pallbearer, Witchcraft, etc.

Honestly, I was trying to approach things from a way to include both! Since I feel as if I wanted to be basic, I could say black sabbath for doom. But when it comes to the average non-metal listener, Type O's name and legacy really permeates on both of those genres. Keep in mind, it's not just about metalhead's opinions solely in terms of what I tried to base this off of. But that's absolutely fair.

But I can safely say that the way of seeing metal in the United States (yours, I believe), in Europe, and in Latin America (mine, I'm Brazilian) is slightly different. And I think that's wonderful. Here, there are bands that are practically sacred, like Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian and (obviously) Sepultura. BMTH is without a doubt the biggest Metalcore here. Folk Metal is really strong (just like in Europe), Rammstein is the symbol of industrial and they would even invent a "melodic metal" or something like that just to include a beloved Brazilian band called "Angra".

Nu metal usually have a lot of rap, hip-hop influence, industrial influence as well as some funk at points. Electronic stuff can be found in it a lot of times with DJ scratching/electro-parts in general. Alt-metal can be harsher, have more distorted guitars. More grunge influence. More harsh vocals. You hear it lumped in with post-grunge as a lot of the bands like Staind, Saliva, Breaking Benjamin etc have a general vibe that is close to those bands. Cheers :]

Eyyy Agalloch is nice to end it on :) I really agree with almost everyone of these! And most of the ones I don´t agree with are the ones where I would´ve chosen the other of your two alternatives, like SOAD over Deftones and Death over Cannibal Corpse. One band I would throw in (even though their discography changes quite a bit) is Avenged Sevenfold for Metalcore. They are also a band that goes soooo far outside the metal scene in terms of popularity. I know so many people that are not into metal at all but they like or have at least heard of Avenged Sevenfold, it´s insane. A lot of my friends also got into metal because of them, including myself to some degree. Also the whole industrial metal debate I feel is more in the US! If you include Europe, it´s Rammstein without a question. I don´t think I know a single person who hasn´t heard Du Hast! And that might be because I´m from Sweden and metal is really big here, but I think most of europeans will agree on this one. And some personal picks for me would be Opeth for prog (even though they are not as big as Tool and Dream Theater, they have kept reinventing themselfs which is what prog is all about imo) and Necrophagist for tech-death (just slappin) :)

For all of these my answer was pretty easy. Death metal: Cannibal Corpse. They're the prototypical band of how normies view death metal and even some think all metal is when it comes to sound and imagery, plus the Ace Ventura cameo has done a lot. Metalcore: Bring Me The Horizon. Sheer numbers are insane, they did experiment with more accessable sounds but came back to it with the Post Human series of albums. Plus they're still playing songs even from the days of Count Your Blessings to sold out stadiums. Groove metal: Pantera. The sheer influence they've had on metal ever since and they're the reason why many bands (including Sepultura) tried hopping on the genre, and DIme changed guitar forever since then. Plus they're known as the heaviest band to ever chart #1 on Billboard, that says enough. Black metal: Behemoth. They're the first band I've heard of when it comes to anything close to black metal, and the numbers don't lie. They are blackened death but they did definitely reach the middle ground of having a sound that is more accessable than the 90's Norwegian stuff but still having the same larger than life intimidating satanic imagery, unlike other bands that have gone in the more symphonic/melodic route that don't have this threatening character. However if we have to stick with the OG Norwegian black metal it's gotta be Mayhem, the story has now reached huge noteriaty even in normie spaces, being covered by normie true crime youtubers and of course... Lords Of Chaos (say what you will about its accuracy). Nu metal: Slipknot. Even when the genre passed its popularity stage they've always stayed relevant throughout the years, which is something you can't say about other nu metal bands, that alone sets it apart and made it an easy answer for me. Plus the fact sound wise it's some of the least accessable bands in the genre yet it pulls such numbers, compared to Linkin Park which always had this accessability to it. Prog metal: Tool. You said it best, plus they do have a quite varied fanbase which also includes people who are not typically into prog, I know people who are into various forms of alternative rock that are really into Tool and would not like any other kind of prog. Deathcore: Lorna Shore. For a genre that's based on an arms race of who's the most brutal and who plays the heaviest breakdowns the fact they reached #4 on Spotify's viral charts says a lot! The only OG that came close to that is Whitechapel, with Our Endless War reaching #10 on Billboard. Alternative metal: System Of A Down. They've been the kings of it since the day they entered the scene, both Serj and Daron are incredibly charismatic and with a sound so unique they've gotten a bunch of fans from all different metal backgrounds. While Deftones are having a ressurgence among Tiktok alternative kids System Of A Down also have more well known songs purely numbers wise OG heavy metal: Ozzy. The godfathers of the genre of course, and I know enough people who are not metalheads at all and are fans of Black Sabbath or Ozzy's solo material. He's a star beyond all stars with so much well known lore and even an incredible reality show too :) Gothic metal: Cradle Of Filth. They're pretty much what people think all goths are, aesthetics and culture wise. Plus the numbers don't lie. Doom metal: Black Sabbath, again. Foor the same reason I mentioned about Ozzy earlier. Thrash metal: well... Power metal: Dragonforce. Purely because of Guitar Hero they'e done so much for such a niche nerdy genre and still getting numbers much bigger than pretty much any other power metal band. Symphonic metal: Nightwish. Non have combined opera and metal in such extreme ways and with such success, you've said it best. Grindcore: Napalm Death. Everything from the Jim Carrey praise, the John Peel exposure and BBC TV appearences, and the feature on the Mortal Kombat movie OST, and the fact they're doing such huge numbers for a genre so underground. An also it's one of the only bands I can think of where going more extreme gave them more popularity an attempts at commercialization never brought in new fans. And also it's the only band I can think of that have been making music since the 80's with their new material being just as good if not even better, that's rare! Though Carcass might also be an honorable mention for the success of their non Grind stuff and the mention on Friends. Also, Cattle Decap are not grindcore, they're brutal death. Maybe Deathgrind. Industrial metal: Marilyn Manson. The man himself is larger than his own music for all the wrong reasons lol. Sludge: Melvins. They have the numbers, they have both the punk cred and the metal cred which is something rare even at a genre which combines punk and metal like Sludge.

Limp Bizkit THE Nu Metal band!? IMO, the obvious answer is KoRn. Arguably the band that defined the genre, and one of the very first bands of the genre... and had success before any of the other bands mentioned... and helped launch Limp Bizkit. Not giving it to KoRn is bad enough, not even mentioning them is worse. 😂 //I agree with Rammstein. They are so huge, they sell out arenas all over the world to this day. In many ways they are arguably one of the biggest metal acts of all time. Normies that dont fuck with metal otherwise get down with Rammstein. They have consistently been one of the biggest acts in metal for a quarter of a century. The number of souls on this rock that has never heard "Du Hast" and dont live under a rock are easily counted... whereas if we take "Hurt" by NIN, most think its a Cash original. Also, NIN are effin' boring live. Manson was huge in the latter half of the 90s and early 2000s then he sorta fell off. Consistent worldwide recognition, has to be Rammstein.

I definitely agree with Cattle Decapitation and Rammstein. Rammstein is a huge live band. I would have switched out NIN for Ministry. Ministry is now a full-fledged industrial metal band. NIN really isn't industrial metal except for Broken and a few songs here and there from other albums.

First of all, Death does not represent the death metal genre because the majority of Death’s discography is not death metal. First three albums yes, the rest of it definitely not. Last 4 albums are more of a prog thing. I’m saying all of this as a very big Death fan. Second of all, “more technical” doesn’t apply here either, cause the only area where Death is more technical is drums; when it comes to guitar riffs some of CC albums showcase things waaaay harder and faster than Death ever had. And lastly, Cannibal Corpse maintained one of the most important aspects of death metal genre- death growl. Again, I fucking love Chuck’s banshee vocals, but that’s not what comes to your mind when you think “death metal vocals” - it’s death growl. So yeah, Cannibal Corpse is a superior death metal band just for the reason it’s much more death metal than Death.

Absolutely agree with your take on death metal. While Death was the OG and the namesake of the sub-genre, they actually were a very experimental band and shifted away from what death metal became and explored other avenues. Cannibal Corpse is the quintessential death metal band these days, both in terms of their popularity, staying power and consistency. Likewise I agree with your take on Metalcore, it's such a broad genre that picking one or two bands to represent it is simply impossible. I figured you'd pick Killswitch Engaged if you were forced to pick but honestly staying with none would have been the better conclusion Imho. As far as Groove metal goes, very easy indeed. Pantera, simple as that, no further elaboration needed. Sepultura and Lamb of God are a stretch, they both did Groove metal, in combination with other sub-genres, but neither ever got as big and popular as Pantera. Black metal is a very tough one, again a very broad sub-genre with many different scenes and sub-sub-genres inside it. I agree that it's definitely not Venom, Bathory nor King Diamond. To me Black metal as we know it today begun with Mayhem, Emperor, Dark Throne, Immortal, etc, not those bands, but are they really the most popular Black metal bands? Not really, no. I'd say bands like Dimmu Borgir are actually significantly more popular than any of the early second wave Norwegian Black metal bands. With that said Dimmu Borgir is not a pure Black metal band but a Symphonic Black metal band so I fully understand why you didn't talk about them. Cradle of Filth is also incredibly popular but even more so than Dimmu Borgir they aren't fully Black metal, if at all. As many people see them as Black metal adjacent. I'd argue that Nu-Metal is actually a rather small sub-genre of metal that is grossly misunderstood. I don't really consider bands like Limp Bizkit, System of a Down, Linkin' Park, etc, as Nu-Metal despite becoming popular during that same era and Imho mistakenly being labeled as such. To me Nu-Metal is early Korn, plain and simple. Other bands like Slipknot, Disturbed, etc, certainly had songs that were very much Nu-Metal but they also have songs that are very far away from it. Speaking of System of a Down, they are *the* Alternative metal band, not Nu-Metal. Progressive *metal* to me has to be Dream Theater. Tool is in right on that line between Progressive rock and Progressive metal, so I'm really uncomfortable using them as the representative Progressive metal band. For Deathcore I definitely agree with Lorna Shore over say Suicide Silence as I agree with you that the modern Deathcore bands have outshone the OGs to the point where today most people know the newer Deathcore bands a lot more than the older ones. Yeah, I strongly disagree with Deftones over System of a Down. Non metal heads listened to a ton of Chop Suey, Aerials, Toxicity, etc, on the radio for years and years. It's arguably *the* metal band across all the metal sub-genres that has most mainstream(as in non metal fans) appeal. I'm sorry but Black Sabbath isn't Heavy metal! It's Doom metal... Heavy metal is very close between Iron Maiden and Judas Priest but ultimately there is only one right answer and that is Iron Maiden. Yeah, Thrash metal is absolutely Metallica. Many metalheads would say Slayer instead but in terms of overall popularity there is no other choice but Metallica. No idea why you mixed Doom metal with Gothic metal, the two are very different... For Doom metal as I said above it's Black Sabbath hands down. Gothic metal is a much tougher one but your choice of Type O Negative is certainly a good one. For Power metal it really depends on who you're talking to. For Americans/Canadians it's certainly Dragonforce, for anyone outside of North America, and especially Europeans, than Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Stratovarius, etc, would be a much better choice. Not sure what Sabaton is even doing there as it's not at all a Power metal band... Not even Power metal adjacent. Also why did you not mention Dio and Rainbow...? Yeah Symphonic metal is absolutely Nightwish. They're still the biggest name in the sub-genre and others like Within Temptation have shied away from Symphonic metal altogether and now have a completely different style. Epica would be the closest alternative to Nightwish but as much as I love Epica they are still significantly less popular than Nightwish, especially in non metal spheres. Not sure why Grindcore is even in this discussion considering it's one of those very niche metal sub-genres that people outside of metal don't have a clue what it even is. As you said, Napalm Death did indeed breach into the mainstream, but the mainstream doesn't even know they're a Grindcore band as they have no clue what Grindcore is... Yeah your top 4 for Industrial metal is spot on. I agree that NIN is the least popular of those 4 and that both Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie have achieved celebrity status but are known as a celebrity much more than they are known as Industrial metal musicians. Therefore it has to be Rammstein. Sludge metal, just like Grindcore, shouldn't really be on this list.

Cool vid but I gotta veto the Grindcore pick. I’m not sold on Cattle Decap being grindcore (or grindcore enough) to accurately represent that scene. I do agree in the last 15 years they’ve seen huge growth and have an enormous reach online. But the records you pointed to that are grabbing the average Joe’s attention who don’t keep their ear to the ground on this stuff barely have grindcore on them. Especially the last two. I can see a case for grind elements being present on Monolith but the last 3 are taking from black metal and combining it with brutal death metal, in my eyes. There’s a much stronger case for their deathgrind status on records like Harvest Floor, Karma.Bloody.Karma and then obviously the first 2. But yea picking Cattle Decap as the most popular grindcore band is like picking Cradle of Filth as the most popular black metal band. Thats not a slight against the bands, it just feels like they don’t quite accurately match up. And I’d have to go Napalm Death here.
@TheMetalTempestYT
@TheMetalTempestYT 10 күн бұрын
That's absolutely valid and I can understand a lot of these points. realistically, cattle decap's deathgrind style always seemed to steadily grow even more popular. and in the same way their sound has diverged, there was that whole timeline of Napalm Death's mid catalogue of practically becoming a death metal band for lack of better terms. Napalm's obviously the pick most would make.
