Harbo, I need to know: why do you not like Donna's most important woman in the universe arch but don't comment on Clara's ridiculous born to save the Doctor storyline? I find them both in a very similar vein, with Clara's annoying me just that bit more. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I can see and agree with everyone on this list…minus Clara. It’s a great list for sure, and I’m extremely happy someone else appreciates Romana 1 (Seriously, she’s great) but after the reasoning behind Donna, it makes it hard to hear Clara being number 1. Clara would be more like, 11 to me. But to each their own 🤷🏻♂️

Personally, I think Series 2 not only showcases Rose being in love with the Doctor, but it also delves into her desire for excitement and adventure regardless of consequence, which a nice thing to explore with the first companion of the revival era to set us up for future interactions. Once assured the Doctor is still the Doctor, Rose decides to take him up on his offer to keep travelling with him, especially after the way she managed to face up to the Sycorax leader. From then on, she becomes increasingly bolder and braver, such as when she rallied the servants to escape the werewolf in Tooth & Claw or when she attempted to follow up on her own set of clues leading to The Wire in The Idiot's Lantern. By the start of The Impossible Planet, she's become so used to this lifestyle that when she suggests if The Doctor is so unsure of their location they might as well just go, she can't even finish the sentence with a straight face before they both burst out laughing. Plus, because Series 2 features both the Doctor AND Rose taking turns saving one another, it's understandable that by the end of Fear Her she (somewhat foolishly) allows herself to believe that they'll always be together. So much so she's willing to leave her family in Pete's World to stay with the Doctor so that he isn't alone. Another reason the Series 2 ending is so sad because in spite of everything she did to keep ahold of her new life, in the end, it just wasn't allowed to last. A lesson the newer fans especially would come to learn and see again and again with the arrival of new companions over the years. The Doctor lasts, but his companions, in one or another, do not.

I think you've summed up my thoughts perfectly- some people really don't like the romantic relationship between Rose and the Doctor in Series 2 but I think it works perfectly and see it as more than just a romantic relationship. The Doctor is a literal alien- almost god-like in Nuwho, and since Series 1, Rose was seen as an equal to the doctor; not by making her super intelligent or authoritative but because you see her learn from him and stand up do to the right thing (something she points out herself in Series 1 and we continue to see in Series 2). Not to mention, after they're separated Rose doesn't just cry all the time in Petes world like some people think- she continues to do what she and the doctor have been doing in the form of Torchwood (albeit mostly offscreen but we do see how much she's developed since then in Series 4). Rose is the most relatable and human companion in my opinion because she does get attached, she gets used to her new life travelling in time and space and grows into a stronger and more capable person as a result even after her travels are cut short- similar to Martha and even Sarah Jane. Series 2 shows not just how the Doctors friendships and dynamics are bound to end in tragedy no matter what, but also demonstrates the good and positive effects the Doctor can leave on their companions.

Like how they become co dependent on each other and the companions behaviours shifts and they become reckless and impulsive in an attempt to be like the Doctor. It doesn't have to be the reason for *why* she dates him, but it would've at least made for a fun comparison that Clara herself doesn't recognize but the Doctor does, subtly showing how much her time in the TARDIS has impacted her life choices without her even realizing it.

I never felt like Clara’s teacher job was sudden. She was a nanny prior so she obviously liked working with kids and during her “impossible girl” arch the doctor sees that she graduated college. Not to mention the doctors ties to Cole Hill school I’m sure he could’ve gotten her the job himself
@lateralhistory3 жыл бұрын
The Amy hate is such a reductive take. She was willing to kill herself TWICE for the slim chance of it saving Rory. Every time the show gave her a choice between the Doctor and Rory, she chose Rory. She puts what she thinks is his best chance for happiness (having children) above her own desire to be with him. She even remembers him subconsciously and spends half a season grieving him when he gets wiped from existence. Sure, Amy is a flirt. But it's pretty obvious it's just her nature, like River, and it usually doesn't mean anything. The most obvioy proof of this is that we never see her with anyone else, even when she and Rory are divorced or he no longer exists. She doesn't fall in love with the Doctor during these time periods, and she's happy to keep Vincent as a friend, even when he pursues her and we can see she cares for him. The only time Amy ever *actually* makes a move on another man is at the end of Flesh and Stone, in a scene which is clearly set up as being an unhealthy coping mechanism for the trauma of the previous two episodes. In a season (season five) in which we're explicitly told that the crack in the wall and the Doctor's twelve year abandonment of her did such a number on Amy she had to see multiple PSYCHIATRISTS, starting in childhood! We're also told the treatment didn't work, because no-one would believe the Doctor was real and so Amy wouldn't engage. It's all pretty fucked up, and the Doctor himself acknowledges that and tries to fix it. Amy is far from heartless, and her relationship with Rory isn't half as one sided as her detractors like to pretend it is. I don't know how anyone could watch an episode like The Girl Who Waited and come away thinking Amy doesn't deserve to be with Rory.

Its been two years but im still not over how wrong this description of roses character is. She grows so much in season two, people who says her only trait is being in love with the doctor are simply purposefully misreading her character. Rose in season two takes leadership specially when the doctor is not around and moves the plot by doing decisions related to trying solving the mysteries herself (tooth and claw, rise of the cybermen, age of steel, idiot's lantern, the impossible planet, satan Pit, Fear Her). She is also much more confident in alien and time travel related stuff than season 1 Rose. Her conversation with Jackie at the beginning of Army of Ghosts is literally about how she changed so much that even her mother finds her barely recognizable. The male audience of doctor who and their never ending "oh no they made my doctor who about girl stuff now :[ " idea literally blinded y'all to how well written and deeply developed Rose's character is and honestly how her season 1, 2 and 4 character arc is a full circle. As RTD said himself, Rose and the Doctor's love story is about the doctor becoming more human and Rose becoming more time lord. People just usually fail (not by lack of reading ability but by lack of desire to) to see this.

Big respect for Clara #1, I agree. Since my flatmate told me to watch the season (now on third run through), I have always said Peter Capaldi is my favourite Doctor as he represents what the character means to me. Clara is his perfect compliment, and her character development from when she meets 11 to the end of her tenure with 12 is fantastic, she is her own doctor. They are real partners in crime, and I was devastated when the doctor lost his memories of her
@_somerandomguyontheinternet_2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Personally, I *loved* Clara as a character, and the only thing that really made me a bit frustrated was her ending being undone. She’d had such a fantastic ending. At the beginning of Hell Bent, I assumed that Twelve was talking to one of her duplicates, and I thought that would be an interesting way for Twelve to cope with her loss. So like, imagine this alternate ending: Clara realizes what the Doctor’s doing and says she needs to get back and that he needs to let her go. There’s an emotional goodbye with the General (who I rather liked) watching and making sure nothing goes wrong. She’s put back in her time and the Doctor turns away as he hears her scream. The General looks at him in sympathy, and gives a sort of comforting nod. He then asks what Gallifrey needs to do (as the Doctor is still technically president), and the Doctor decides he doesn’t want to be in charge, making the General acting president and saying he’ll be checking in from time to time. The General asks if there’s anything they can do for him before he leaves, and the Doctor says “There is one thing.” We then cut back to him talking to “Clara” and she asks what that one thing was. He says they helped him find a friend of Clara’s - a sort of sister, almost - and that he was on his way to see her when he stopped by. She tells him that she hopes he finds her. She says that it sounds like he’s going through a rough time and she hopes he’ll be alright, and and he says “Yes, I do think I will.” He then slings his guitar over his shoulder and walks back out to the truck, which he drives to the Tardis. He walks inside and sits down, starting to play Clara’s theme. As he does, the camera focuses on his face and we see him crying, but the corner of his mouth turns upward, and it fades to black. That would have been an amazing conclusion to the season, instead of Moffat Moffating himself into knots in order to find a way for Clara to survive.

She was easily the most 3 dimensional companion in the entirety of New Who and had a completely unique psyche that I guarantee you won't find anywhere else. Even her echoes didn't have the exact same thought processes and mannerisms as the original Clara. Whether you like her or not is completely independent from the fact that she was an extremely multifaceted person. Jack Harkness is the only one who comes close to Clara's level and that's mostly because he was fleshed out in Torchwood, which worked almost completely independently from Doctor Who. Harbo, I disagree with you about a lot of things, particularly your distain for Steven Moffat fans, but I love that you put Clara at the top of this list. She's my favourite companion too. I haven't seen enough of Classic Who to judge all of the others but I'll list off my favourite New Who companions here. 1) Clara Oswald The most complex and multifaceted companion, Clara is my favourite largely because of her psychology. People have said that she's inconsistent but I never saw it that way. She's got layers that get stripped away slowly throughout Season 8 and then in Season 9, she rebuilds herself to be like the Doctor. She has the most fleshed out character arc that a companion has had in New Who, perhaps even the entire series because we see Clara reach her lowest point in Dark Water and then pull herself out of it until she reaches the end of Hell Bent, which is a criminally underrated episode that was overshadowed by Heaven Sent. I also feel that Clara doesn't get enough credit for carrying so much of Peter Capaldi's era. For me, Capaldi was a nightmare in Season 8, an overrated actor who spent too much time playing the Valeyard, whether he intended to or not, instead of the Doctor. Clara balanced him out and without her, Capaldi's era would have crashed and burned within his first season. 2) Jack Harkness This might be cheating a bit because Jack relied heavily on Torchwood to flesh him out, since he was basically just the bisexual immortal man in Doctor Who itself. However, he was not only groundbreaking for being a bisexual time traveller long before it was cool but he was given a 3 dimensional personality. His shameless flirting with everybody around him was fun to watch but it didn't overshadow the fact that he was a man who was struggling with the pain, boredom and loneliness of being immortal whilst everybody he loved kept dying all around him. This also explains why he was in love with the Doctor - yeah, I think we can safely say that he was in love with him due to waiting for centuries for him to come back without growing resentful and building Torchwood in his honour - since the Doctor was the only person he knew who would truly understand how miserable it was, which is actually more relatable than Rose and Martha simply crushing on David Tennant because he's handsome. 3) Wilfred Mott Rest in peace, Bernard Cribbins. I kind of wish he'd left Wilfred alone after The End of Time because Doctor Who is in such a sorry state now that I'm afraid his final performance will be ruined by the writing and baggage of Chris Chibnall's era. However, it's undeniable that the man brought incredible heart to Wilf. He could be the goofy and bubbly grandfather who lit up any room he walked into but when he was crying, it was heartbreaking to watch and it was such a cruel twist that Wilf turned out to be the man who knocked four times. 4) Billie Piper Yes, there's a reason I'm calling her Billie Piper instead of Rose Tyler and that is to nail down the fact that Rose and the Moment were two completely different characters. I agree with everything you said about Rose in Season's 1 and 2 - she started off great, then just became the Doctor's lovesick puppy - but when Piper returned as the Moment, she delivered what I consider to be the best performance of her career, which also elevated her previous performances as Rose in my mind. Going toe to toe with John Hurt is no small feat and it was a nice reversal of Rose's relationship with Christopher Ecclestone. It was also clear that Piper had matured because despite her goofy and bubbly demeanour, the Moment still carried a sense of age, power, wisdom and authority. 6) Amy Pond Yes, Amy was a total bitch in Season 5 but that was the point. She was a woman with severe abandonment issues, so allowing herself to grow close to anybody terrified her. Was it inappropriate of her to throw herself at the Doctor at the end of The Time of Angels? Fuck, yes it was! But every single one of us have done things that we don't want the rest of the world to know about. I like that Amy was allowed to be a person with severe flaws and issues despite the risk of people hating her because it made her a more 3 dimensional character. It showed that despite Moffat's fairy tail approach, he respected the audience enough to let them watch people with all their flaws on display, instead of just characters who represent the best of humanity. 7) Alex Kingston Again, I'm using the name of the actress rather than the character because River Song spent most of her time being a Mary Sue. I'm especially annoyed that Moffat gave her the ability to regenerate but I think River was a real learning experience for him as a writer, because he was careful not to fall into the Mary Sue trap with anybody else except Tasha Lem. Despite all the flaws in River's writing, Alex Kingston was so charming and having so much fun with the role that it was infectious. Without her, River would have been unbearable. She holds a special place for me, partially because The Husbands of River Song was the last complete episode of Doctor Who that I ever watched. It also rescued River from ending her story as a Mary Sue by exposing her insecurities about the Doctor not loving her as well as having her be completely oblivious to his presence, which was funny because we're so used to the Doctor being the one who's in the dark whenever River's around. It helped to balance them out after years of portraying River as being superior to the Doctor.

watching many of your videos in the past week gave me the impression that we share the same opinions and having Clara as number 1 proves it! I also liked the part where she was brought back to life and given her own Tardis simply because I had trouble accepting that she was dead to begin with! Also I love how you often refer to her as 12's "Platonic Soulmate" as opposed the seeing her as his romantic interest like a lot of people do. With all that said, I would have included Amy Pond on this list. I understand that her personality might not be everyone's cup of tea like how she used to treat Rory at least at the beginning, but I firmly believe that her connection with 11 being "the first face his face saw" and how big of a role she played in his life and the impact of her death on him makes her one of the most important Doctor's Companions of all time

3:09 - Wilf is actually named Tom Campbell, a former police officer who stumbled into the TARDIS believing it to actually being a police box so he could call for backup following a jewelry store robbery. He then met a man named Dr. Who, who wasn't an alien called a Time Lord but a human inventor who created the TARDIS and was about to travel into the future with his niece Louise and granddaughter Susan. They arrive in London in the year 2150 to see that it has been invaded and taken over by the Daleks.

Y'see what you describe as being a plus for Clara is exactly why I can't stand her: she's written to practically become the Doctor, and I can't stand that. It felt like the show was starting to revolve around her and that's not what the companion is supposed to be. It's not what the show is supposed to be. Granted, the writing took a nose dive around series 6-7 time anyways so I don't place my animosity toward Jenna Coleman. Just the character of Clara. Coupled with the "born to save the Doctor" bullshit (which I find weird that you don't despise in the same way you say you don't like the most important woman in the world arch) and the fact that Steven Moffat didn't know when to let the character go just made her unbearable to me. I'm kinda disappointed you've put her at number one because if asked who I'd wanna see at the top of these lists my answer is always, "I don't care as long as its not Clara." Just a differencing in opinion though, it happens.

You’ve 100% hit the nail on the head there! Clara is so smug, it’s unbearable to watch. I get the idea of trying out a ‘toxic’ companion who’s bad for the Doctor, but realistically it’s just not pleasant or enjoyable to watch as an audience.

I agree with you, Clara deserves the number 1 spot, she was the companion that was traveling with the Doctor when I started watching Doctor Who (11th Doctor/ Series 7, first full episodes I watched were Hide and Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS, loved them), while in my opinion, the connection between the Doctor and Clara in Series 8 was broken apart (Last minutes of Kill the Moon, anyone?), by the end of Last Christmas onward, the Doctor and Clara's connection was fixed, and I overall love her ending, because in a way, she really is the Impossible Girl because who else just says they are frozen in time and travels around the universe awaiting the time when their time restarts and they die.

idk why people don’t fw clara. AS A COMPANION she morally challenged the 12th Doctor the most which reset him as a character since the death of amy and rory and the impact it had on the 11th Doctor. remember the 11th Doctor vowed to stop travelling through time until Clara “impossible girl” Oswald came along. and her set up in that Dalek story way before she was actually introduced as her own character caught me off guard like for real. she deserves more praise tbh. oh oh oh and let’s not forgot her relationship with the TARDIS like the TARDIS’ arch throughout clara’s run was to be able to trust anyone other than the doctor like LOL

Jack holds a unique place on the companion list. He understands better than any others what it means to live the life the Doctor lives. River has become a love her or hate her character, but one does have to appreciate that she also has unique insight that other companions do not. I do also appreciate Nardole. He didn't take much guff off the Doctor and the idea that River bequeathed responsibility for the Doctor to him makes him another special figure that deserves recognition.

(Forgive the New Who favoritism; I'm still getting through the Classics) - Adelaide Brooke, for excellent characterization, backstory, and development, even if she was only in one episode - River Song, for a unique concept that sometimes brought out some amazing character moments for both her and the Doctor (although I personally feel like she was best in Silence in the Library and mostly got more one-note the further Moffat went with her) - Bill and Nardole, for playing off each other very well and creating my favorite TARDIS Team with multiple companions - Graham O'Brien, for being the only reason I've been able to put up with the Chibnall era so far, mostly due to an excellent performance
