My first dog was a mutt, cocker spaniel mix. She was a rescue, and we think she was about 2 or 3 when we brought her home. She was such a lovely dog, loved kids, acted like a momma dog to a puppy we got about 10 years later. She lived for a very long time, we had her for about 20 years, so we think she was some where around 22 give or take when she passed away, she even died peacefully in our home, just stood up, looked confused for a minute, took two steps and fell over. Our second puppy (bischon poo mix) was raised by her for 8 years and was visibly greiving after his best friend died. We miss you Zoe! You live in my family's hearts forever and we will see you again someday. She was one of the best friends I had as a kid and all the way through my 3rd year of college. She walked my sister and I to both of our first days of school, and wagged her tail at the door when we came home from college to visit. Keep your heart open to rescue dogs. They are wonderful companions. Sorry for the long comment here, and thank you if you read this far. Shes been been gone fir almost 10 years now and I still miss her

My family's first dog was a Cocker Spaniel, who we got when I was 6 years old. He was seriously the best dog ever. He loved everybody, was super playful, and great with kids. When I was in high school and didn't want to get up for school, he'd stand at the side of my bed and lick my eyes until I got up. He was almost 15 years old when he passed, and the vet said they could tell he was really well loved. Every Cocker I see, I have to pet and rub their ears (Cocker's have frequent ear infections, and every Cocker I've met has LOVED when they have their ears rubbed).

My first pup is a Bichon Frise that I recommended to my parents at the age of 14. I researched extensively for a breed that got no bigger than a cat, great health record, and a good family dog with young children and with special needs. He’s always love being around people and follow us wherever we go. So happy to have him for 11 years and hopefully many more ❤️ Though quick shoutout to Pitbulls cause they are big babies that just want love! Hoping to get one as my first personal dog in the next couple years ❤️

Grew up with Shepherds, Spaniels, Terriers, Collies, and Poodles, and Retrievers. My first dog on my own was a SAMOYED. Best dog ever. Great with kids, no biting, no aggressiveness, loyal, and the best smile ever! The only drawback was the shedding in the summer. My ex was brushing our dog at a park during a summer and maintenance was complaining with the hair all over the place. She lived well over 15 years…almost the lifespan of two Great Danes. Miss you girl.

My first dog was a boxer, such a sweet dog. My parents had him since before I was born and they always told me how gentle and protective he was. We got a mix between a boxer and an Argentinian Dog after that, who sadly passed away recently due to cancer, but he was the sweetest dog ever. Too strong for me to take on walks, but insidr our house he was a friendly giant. To people who didn't know him he looked "dangerous" because he was big and strong, but he was such a loving dog and I'll always miss him.

We're on our 3rd pair of Greyhounds. We've always adopted them from the race track when they retire, and they have been great dogs (except they sometimes think they are an 80lb lap dog). Our current two were adopted right as the tracks were closing, so they were just 1 and 2 years old - a bit more energetic than our others :) One note though: Greyhounds work best if you have a pair, rather than one. And yes, they are 40-mph-couch-potatoes. After a 5 minute run, they'll lay around for 8 hours. And they rarely bark.

Me as a trained animal keeper.....are you sure about some of these dogs...cus you are going very stereotypical and please keep in mind, Great Dane are dying "quite" young, pugs have breathing problems and not even get me started on the bernese mountain dog (Berner Sennenhund) they have ED (elbow dislocation, hip dislocation, eye infections, ear infections, need a lot of care on their fur, and have a tendency for overheating in the summer). I do agree with some breeds like golden retriver, and Labrador but please inform people on the health problems these breeds get easily or are at this point even normal (german sheperd and hip dislocation like...yikes arthritis)

Good points. Dachshunds often can have back problems unless they are trained not to jump up and down from the sofa. But they can be quite long-lived; both of our mini-dachshunds lived to nearly 16. We had a Labrador Retriever when I was a kid, and he was crazy; he attacked my little sister (she was five years old), and he used to try to run through the sliding glass door, banging his head into the glass over and over. There was something very, very wrong with that dog. :(

I never had a dog, until my daughter decided to get one when she started medical school. But soon, she figured it was not easy to take care of the dog while in medical school. So, I ended up with a most beautiful dog called Bellissima. But may be that's just my perception. There is a picture of her on my Channel. With the first light of the day, I could hear her shaking herself, and waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs to celebrate the arrival of the new day. Just seeing her expressive eyes, and her long ears moving side to side, warms my heart. She is not only beautiful, but also very intelligent. She knows when I put down my reading glasses and pick up my regular eye glasses, it is time for a walk!

My first dog was a Lhasa Apso named Marcie! I still remember the day we adopted her from a puppy store the summer of 2002 before I entered the 4th grade! She was a very sweet girl whose favorite thing to do was hiding under my parents bed when she wanted some alone time! Two years later my parents surprised my sisters and I with her little brother Murphy as an early Christmas present (they came from the same mother Sandy but from different litters)! He was a very energetic and playful little guy who loved chasing me down the hallway every chance he got! Anyways we had 7 wonderful years with Marcie and 4 great ones with Murphy until one day in 2009! A few days prior my sisters and I started noticing that our dogs and their things were gone but we didn’t say anything about it until our parents sat us down in the living room for a family meeting! Our mom said that Marcie and Murphy weren’t behaving normally towards her lately so she called the owner of their (the dogs) mother Sandy for advice! And she told her that Lhasa Apsos get more aggressive the older they get! This was the time where we didn’t really do much research on dog breeds like we do now! Of course I remember getting bitten by them a few times but I thought that was just normal and no big deal! Anyways after that phone discussion my mom and dad made the heartbreaking decision to give away Marcie and Murphy! At the time I was really mad and sad because I never got to say goodbye to them! Also because of my autism it wasn’t always easy for me to make human friends so my little Lhasa Apsos were like my only best buddies to me for a majority of my life! I still have pictures of them that I look at once in a while to remember them by and I have since adopted a rescue mix named Kalee and an English Cream Golden Retriever named Gypsy! So yeah I think dogs will always be my number one favorite animals because of my experience!

My family has always had german sheperd dogs since before I was born, and they’re awesome…but, objectively not the best dog to have as your first - they can be stubborn, and once they learn something no matter what you can’t make them unlearn it (at least that has been the case for the ones we had). Also, I totally agree with what the video says about Bernese Mountain Dogs: I have one and, based on my personal experience with him, they’re super playful, super affectionate and super gentle. 💖💖

our first breed was a maltipoo, he was sooooo tiny when we got him, but he grew to be knee high. we now also have a second one who was a stray when we found him. no chip or anything. that one is a pomeranian, and he’s a cute little fluff ball. his tail, when not wagging it looks like those curly fries. he’s actually a love dog, very playful, and he loves to love all over you if he meets a person of a friendly nature. just be careful, he’ll try to give you a bath.

You can't go wrong with adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group. Many rescue groups work with foster homes and the foster homes can give you all kinds of information on the dog's activity level, their personality, whether they're okay with other animals, etc. You'll find absolutely wonderful, loving dogs coming from both a shelter and from a rescue group. If you want a specific breed, you can also find many breed rescue groups.

I agree. A lot of breeds have health issues because of closed gene pools (ie inbreeding) which is why mixed breeds tend to be healthier. English bulldogs are probably the most extreme example where some of the traits that were purposely bred into them are harmful, like squished faces which make it harder for them to breath.
@batgurrl
@batgurrl 2 жыл бұрын
@@meredithwhite5790 well said, I love all animals, but as a disabled person, I couldn’t handle taking care of a dog. Cats were more ‘my speed’. Funny that you mentioned the dogs with the ‘squished faces’ was spot on. I do not like them at all, same thing with the flat nosed cats. They think they look more human, but they are creepy to me😱

I've worked as a trainer/minder and the main reason (not the only one) that always recommend mixed breed dogs is because they are more usually more "happy" or adapt better to have a "pet live". Keep in mind that humans have been breeding dogs and selecting dogs for very specifics jobs since prehistory. Some pure breed dogs really crave a job, and will "invent it" if the owner does not challenge them physical and/ or intellectually. If it's true that you can avoid many genetical illness getting a mix breed, that doesn't have to mean that an specific dog will live longer or healthier.

I'd strongly recommend a Border Terrier as a first dog. They are extremely loving, are a small dog but can run all day, easy to train, very easy coat to look after and any dirt just never seems to stick to them. Brilliant at vermin control and are a very funny breed. I can't recommend this breed enough, they are everything you could want in a pet and a first time owner would have very little trouble in training them.

From my personal experience, I’d recommend a Maltese as a great first dog. My pup Grogu is a year old and has an amazingly sweet personality, friendly with literally everyone he meets. He doesn’t need too much exercise, but he’d gladly run around a field with you. Maltese are also hypoallergenic, intelligent and don’t shed or drool, meaning your house would be relatively clean. They can be slightly stubborn and picky eaters though

Actually, this is a pretty good list of "easy" dogs (the easier the dog, the better for a first dog). I did want to add that you had a variety of dogs in there and grooming requirements for, say, the Great Dane, is quite different from that of the Shih Tzu. The ShihTzu is likely going to need to be groomed professionally every four to six weeks (or you're looking at a dog with that really long hair you see in the show ring). Same for the poodle. And that can be quite expensive (in addition, you'll need to groom them every day at home). The activity level is also very different (which you pointed out) and be sure that you don't get a Great Dane if you want your dog to go on 20-mile hikes with you and don't get a Papillon if you don't want to give the dog plenty of exercise (these are often called Pocket Rockets), they are extremely fast and athletic and have a huge requirement for exercise. Looking for a small dog and want to get involve in the sport of agility? The Papillon is perfect for you. My husband and I have had Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds for many year--and we were heavily involved in Dane and Wolfhound rescue for many years. And also wanted to mention that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have had some issues in the past with many genetic conditions! If you want a Cavalier, research the health issues these dogs can have and go to a breeder and ASK them point blank if their dogs have ever had any of those issues. If they hem and haw, go elsewhere. If the say "No, absolutely not", they're probably not being honest, either. These dogs can have genetic issues that kill them before their first birthday, so buyer beware. That's also the case with Danes and Wolfhounds--make sure you know about the genetic issues and be sure you don't get a puppy that has any and Danes and Wolfhounds don't live very long--you're LUCKY if they live to be 10 years of age. Most die in the 6 to 8 age range.

As someone with two whippets, let me say: they are lovely dogs who need a lot of exercise, whether running after a ball repeatedly or enjoying a long stroll on the beach. They are also sighthounds, so the moment they see something, they’re off, and it’s very difficult to dissuade them from pursuing their target. They have unique personalities. One of my whippets loves to be cuddled and to curl up with you wherever you go. The other is affectionate but likes his own space. He doesn’t enjoy being cuddled or overly pampered and often sidles off upstairs for some alone time. He’ll also let you know he wants to be covered and tucked in-yes, he will yelp if you don’t. He’ll yelp louder and louder until he’s been covered and tucked in. They are notorious food thieves; they will swipe food off your plate or from your worktop (if they can reach) whenever you aren’t looking. They genuinely wait until you have your back turned and then go for the food, so don’t leave anything within their reach or unattended-even for just 30 seconds. I once went to get a glass of water and came back to find my kebab remnants on the floor 🙄. They get on well with my two Jack Russell rescues as well. They are fragile due to their streamlined shape and thin skin, making it easy for them to cut themselves on brambles and other shrubbery. They aren’t aggressive at all and don’t have the sassy personality of my Jacks (which I love in their own way), but the whippets have very sharp teeth and can sometimes accidentally cut you when playing with their toys. They’re also bony, and it does get uncomfortable when they sit on you in an awkward position. You need to get them out of the habit of walking across people on the sofa, as they will happily do so with little regard for anyone’s personal space.

The number one thing I would recommend if you are thinking about getting a dog is DO YOUR RESEARCH many people just get dogs for the aesthetic but it’s actually a lot of work, time, and money to invest in a dog. So make sure you do your research on the right dog for you and make sure you have the time and money to be able to take care of the dog.

Shih tzus are great dogs. I grew up with them and my family (parents, grandma, aunt, and I) have had a combined total of 19 in the past 50 years. They really are wonderful, sweet dogs. They need humans who are willing and able to enforce boundaries - they can be stubborn. They’re great for homes with less space, and though they like walks they’re also happy to just loll on the couch all day. Grooming is crucial and whether you grow their hair out or get them shaved, there’s still a time and financial commitment, especially if you keep their hair long. My current shih tzu has a full coat and I do spot-combings a couple times a week when I notice tangles developing, with a full 90-minute - 2 hour comb once a week. It’s also extremely important to maintain their topknots if you keep their hair long; they can be prone to eye ulcers if their hair is allowed to get in their eyes. Also, be prepared to shell out a lot of money on dental cleaning, though it varies. We had one shih tzu who was a hard chewer and only needed his teeth cleaned once in his entire life, but we had another one who preferred plush toys rather than hard chew toys and he needed annual teeth cleanings to the tune of $600 a year. Finally, if you’re looking for a shih tzu make sure you go to a responsible breeder. Standard, healthy shih tzu weight ranges from 9-16 pounds. “Teacup” and “Imperial” designer tiny shih tzus should absolutely not be a thing and can result in serious health issues (if you don’t believe me, ask a vet). Ask the breeder how much the adult dogs weigh and move on if the dogs are below standard. Finding responsible breeders takes some patience, but these beautiful, sweet, playful companions are absolutely worth your dedication!

Currently I have a 9 week(?) old XL Bully, and currently she is the best pet to have in my opinion. She likes to play and sometimes might nibble on your palm. She never has bit me out of fear or anger but rather because she was excited to see me after being gone for 7 hours

I am really happy to see the Great Dane on the top ten I grew up with two as a kid they were both very loyal to us but I don’t recall them slobbering too much but guess some do and some don’t. I currently have a Jack Russell as my very first long time dog though he’s very loyal to me but he’s also very strong willed and can have his own mind. You should do a top ten on high energy dogs I’d wager the Jack Russell would be tops

MY FIRST DOG IS BAILEY, MY CHIHUAHUA/BEAGLE MIX; CHEAGLE. SHE'S MY BESTIE. THOSE EYES!!! I'M A SENIOR AND BAILEY GETS ME OUTDOORS AT LEAST TWICE A DAY AND WE HAVE FUN. SHE'S GOOD COMPANY FOR OVERCOMING DEPRESSION. SHE WAS A WILD PUPPY BUT PRETTY EASY TO TRAIN. SHE'S GOT ATTITUDE AND DOESN'T CARE FOR OTHER DOGS. HER BUDDY IS MY 11 YR OLD CAT, PEACHES. BEING A DOG PARENT IS A SOMETIMES EXPENSIVE, BIG RESPONSIBILITY WITH A HUGE REWARD. ON THOSE HARD DAYS BAILEY MAKES ME SMILE. YOU WILL NEVER FIND A BETTER FRIEND.

My first dog was a beagle, a good family dog and good with kids (I was 3 when he was homed here) everything was fun when he was around! He was smart, cuddly and did not bark at the family! (Ok, he barked at other dogs but…….) HOWEVER, there are obviously some things you have to look into before getting one: IF you have a garden and will let your beagle free in there, make sure the barriers don’t have any holes or anything because beagles tend to escape (mine was almost constantly outside and when he would run away, he would come back on his own) and the second point is: beagles eat whatever they see so if you have some kind of addiction in giving food to animals every time you see that their bowl is finished, try to pace yourself, and say that to your beagle too :D PACE YOURSELF BEAGLE, PACE YOURSELF!! ^^

That is the downside to Beagles. They're great kid's dogs, but can break a kid's heart from "running away" and getting out and getting hit by cars.

I had a Beagle when I was young. A beautiful tricolour dog , he grew a bit oversized for the breed and was a strong dog. If a hare got up in the field where we were walking he sometimes slipped his collar and ran away for hours. He could be nasty if you say took a sock off him that he had stolen. He bit my granny's foot when she did this.

Bernese is a good callout. A bit rough while they are adolescent but after that the sweetest dog breed ever. Really good and sensitive with children. Mine is a higher energy one than usual, but after a walk he will just lay around and come cuddle you. He is a male one tho and not very good with other male dogs, but that isn't a usual trait.

German Shepherd! Great family dogs, love kids, very protective and love to play. I have so many stories of one of my GSD'S dragging my daughter around the yard by her hand. She used her mouth but never ever left teeth marks. My GS, Ella, right now is 2½ and I have a 7 month old grandbaby, she absolutely adores. I can't wait till he starts toddling around so they can really play together. German Shepherd's...best dogs ever ❤️❤️❤️

I love Whippets! I work with dogs that have behavioral issues and I almost never get calls about Greyhounds and Whippets. The calls I get for Greyhounds are from ex-racers and ex-blood donor dogs that can have issues due to their poor start in life, but I don't think I've ever had a call about a Whippet. They're so sweet!

My first dog was a lab mix, I got her from the humane society when she was a puppy, she was a mix with a terrier and the other puppies were smaller, she was called the queen of the litter, she was larger and fed more. My lab mix was sweet, loving and smart. I took her to an obedience class the humane society offered and one of the trainers pointed her out as a dog eager to please, while a full blood terrier was pointed out as harder to train. I have has many dogs in my life and most were from the humane society and were mixed breeds, I think the mixed breeds sometimes avoid some of the physical problems and illnesses common in some pure bred dogs. Check out your humane society, save a life and have a companion that will give you unconditional love!

Border Collies: Smart, sweet, affectionate. Where were they on this list????
@janhankins911
@janhankins911 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think Border Collies are generally recommended as "first" dogs. Not that Border Collies aren't great dogs--they are! But Border Collies are extremely intelligent and NEED a job. They are NOT content to lay around on the couch all day. If you want a dog to train for a marathon with you, a Border Collie will be a great running buddy. But if you like coming home at the end of the day, kicking off your shoes and relaxing in front of the TV, a Border Collies is NOT for you. Border Collies NEED a great deal of exercise and mental stimulation. If you give them the exercise and mental stimulation they need, they're absolutely wonderful dogs. If you don't give them that, then they'll get their energy and need for mental stimulation out in ways you may not appreciate--like eating your couch, eating your expensive new shoes, spreading garbage all of the house, etc.

My first dog was a Puddle that I named Cleo. She was an amazing dog I had her for almost 10 years until she passed and I named her after the poodle from Clifford the Big Red Dog. I even have a pitbull named Clifford. Pitbulls are great dogs too. I know that pit bulls get a bad prep for being bad dogs or whatever but honestly it's best to get them when they're puppies because there's so much easier to train when they're puppies. So when they grow up they're not going to be as aggressive as they get older.
