0:33-1:00 that was awesome. Old technique looks awesome now. It doesn't even look like straddle, it is more like hurdle. In men's event, there were Vladimir Yashenko and Valery Brummel with their straddle technique. In women, we have this awesome lady.

I think that is Eastern Cutoff, born in the day when the feet had to precede the head over the bar (no "diving"). A scissors-kick, with feet going over first, but the body laid out as flat as may be done whilst the bar is being crossed, thus lowering the centre of mass very considerably by comparison to a simple scissor kick. More efficient than scissors, marginally less efficient than Western Roll, very much less efficient than Straddle.
Thanks for sharing this. After all these years it's still a mystery to me how they manage to do that flop. I think it's a real art being a high jumper. My personal favorites were Kajsa Bergqvist and Hestrie Cloete. Kajsa with her blonde beauty made her compulsive viewing, and Hestrie with her wonderful winged approach made her look like an angel about to take off.
@juhajaara55256 жыл бұрын
I tried to be a bit more objective, and took into account 1) medals in major international championships (with special emphasis to Olympic success); 2) personal best result; 3) have you ever held a world record, and if so, how long a time (though this was not a major factor in my formula); and, SB statistics (a minor addition, too). Here's my top ten: 1. Stefka Kostadinova 2. Ulrike Meyfarth 3. Blanka Vlašić 4. Sara Simeoni 5. Anna Chicherova 6. Iolanda Balaş 7. Hestrie Cloete 8. Heike Henkel 9. Rosemarie Ackermann 10. Inha Babakova Bubbling uder: Yelena Yelesina, Kajsa Bergqvist, Mariya Lasitskene.
@puydolmint16446 жыл бұрын
haha Bergqvist not in the top 10, still a world record Holder with the second highest jump of all time....
@juhajaara55256 жыл бұрын
@@puydolmint1644 , yes, I too think that's crazy. However, my approach was to develop a mechanical formula that yields the ranking. How hard I tried, I could not find a way to set weights to success factors such that does not leave out someone I think should be on top 10. Or, that does not yield an ordering that otherwise does not make sense. Bergqvist's problem is poor success in Olympic games. And, Bergqvist's record is an indoor record; I put more emphasis into outdoor results. The rationale behind my approach is that we all tend to have our own favourites and those ones we do no like that much. And, some jumpers get more media attention that's not directly related to their success in sports. All this may affect our ratings, and I wanted to exclude such things, somehow try to be a bit more objective.

This video missed two of the greatest female high jumpers of all time: (1) Sara Simeoni got #1 in the Olympic Games in 1980, besides being world record holder with 2,01m between 1978 e 1983; and (2) Ulrike Meyfarth as the youngest olympic champion (in 1972) of all time and she would be gold in Los Angeles as well beating Sara Simeoni in one of the best duo contests ever seen. Rosemarie Ackermann comes also as the first woman to jump over 2 metres, she's won gold in Montreal. But it's hard to list The 10 Top Female High Jumpers of All Time when so many others made their way to place high jump as one of the most beautiful modality. Cheers for the video anyway! I used to be a high jumper from 1977 to 1983 (including a junior record in 1982 here in Brazil) and I just still love it indeed.

In what sense do you think Iolanda Balaș was the best ever not using the Fosbury flop? There are jumpers not using Fosbury flop technique whose PB is better than Balaș' one. For instance, Olympic champion Rosemarie Ackermann who used straddling technique. Of course, it's possible to argue Balaș was the best non-flopper ever as she was so devastatingly dominant during her career. But, rated by that criterion, she might be the best one of all, not just of non-floppers.

Considering her very small height for a high jumper (only 175 cm), and her jump of 208 cm, Kajsa Bergqvist is undoubtedly the most outstanding high jumper in history.

Balas should be number one with room to spare. The most dominant high jumper ever and, as you noted, the best jumper ever with the techniques and coaching available to her. 157 consecutive wins, two Olympic gold medals, 14 World Records, the last of which was beaten 10 years later and only after better techniques had been adopted. There is no metric by which you should consider her anything less than the best historically.

The interesting facet of the technique of most of the world's best female jumpers is that they technically jump similarly to the world's best male high jumpers who use the the fos. fl. technique. Insofar as they do not suffer a massive power leak like nearly all females. Meaning exactly what? With all power sports the athlete attempts to secure a power return as close to the level of power applied. So with high jumping great power is initially applied by running forwards. As the attack foot is stamped down to generate height one tries to use all of the forward energy used in running. Due to the laws of physics that is impossible as some loss of energy is bound to occur. But such must be minimised. This is principally minimised by jumping square to the ground, that is by creating a 90 degree angle as one gains height. Compare say the male record holder Soto.... with the female world record holder Kosto.....and they both do exactly that. They were both incredibly efficient in not losing energy, they both jumped at 90 degrees. Now look at the technique at all of today's female high jumpers: Where they leave the ground with their attack foot is as much as two metres away from where they finally cross the bar! That is they jump along the bar rather that directly over it. Why female high jumpers fail to properly absorb impact force I do not know. It's one of those mystery questions like 'why can't nearly all pentathletes be taught to efficiently throw a javelin?'

HELLO SOMETIMES I THINK THAT SOME PEOPLE THEY DON'T HAVE THE NOTION OF SHAME. I CAN ADMIRE THE BEST PERFORMANCES REALIZED. I CAN UNDERSTAND THE SYMPATIES AND NATIONAL PATRIOTISM BUT TO PUT SOMEONE WHO DID RECORDS AFTER RECORDS BY HERSELF (THAT MEANS CONSECUTEVELY) AND ALSO TO BECOME TWICE OLIMPIC GOLD MEDALIST ON SAND, ON THE 9TH PLACE IN THIS PRESENTATION IS ONLY MORE THAN NOTHING AND I CAN APPRECIATE ONLY THE FACT THAT HAD THE POWER TO RECOGNICE THOUGH SOMEHOW THE EXTRAORDINARY VALUE OF THE ATHLETE AND COULD NOT EXCLUDE FROM THIS. THANK YOU FOR THE EFFORT ON THIS

she had the most potential, but she seemed insecure and unable to deal with the expectations... Also, most of her competitors hated her and thought she was arrogant (because of her attitude, resting bitch face and that dancing after a jump) In the Bejing Olympics she caved under pressure against Hellebaut (who won gold), and she never really came back from that... it's a pity, cause when she was good, she was really good !

That record won't be able to get broken for a long time from a female... The expectations from them after that will be to high some can't handle the pressure before the jump knowing that will happem

Not sure why Iolanda Balas didn't use the other technique. She's jumping over the pole like it's just a hurdle! I'm sure that if she used the revised method she'd have an unbeaten record to this day
