In my opinion, the striker is the most important thing. Every fero rod I have, some expensive, some cheap, work about the same with a good striker. I have never failed to get a fire going with any of my rods (knock on wood). Thanks for going to the expense and time to show us your comparison. I appreciate it.

I Totally Agree 💯% I Think There Are Differences in Hard vs Soft. And Amount Of Magnesium / Cerium etc. I Think You Can't Beat a Dedicated Striker. I Also Think You Can't Beat A HSS Square Lathe Bit For A Striker. I Wanted To Try Do A Comprehensive Comparison Test With What I Am Familiar With. I Would Have Added Other Good Rods If I Knew Of Some. I Also Think Technique Is Also Important. Thanks For Stopping By. I Appreciate Your Comments and Opinion. I Think That Is The Most Important Part Of This Video Is The Comment Section, Where We Can Draw Knowlege and Wisdom From Each Other. Then Explore That and Apply It To Benefit and Grow in Our Skills.😊👍👏👏👏👏👏👏💥💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

For the last nine years I have used two different ferro rods, the one I use the most is Nathan’s and I also use 4db. Chris was my first sub on KZbin. I didn’t know he was leaving, I would have bought more of his product. Thanks for sharing. Tony.

very nice comparison mate, scrapers make or break the rod, and to be honest I don't think it much matters these days as far as ferro rods go. As you note they are all made in China. I love the 12% cobalt HSS scraper, they rip the spark out of a rod.

The Dave Canterbury one didn't impress me much for his hype on it. I thought the bayite and ericX seemed to soft for my liking the rest were pretty close. And as you say. A good striker is essential. And cobalt added to the mix is the cream of HSS strikers. That hardness can elevate a cheap rod to useful ripping out globs of lava.😂👍💥💥💥🌋🌋🌋👊💯💯💯

I agree with Dean. The scraper is the key. All brands source their rods from somewhere. It would be interesting to know where each is made. I love Dave Canterbury but he is a master marketer with a top selling brand he has been working on for years. I’m continually amazed at the money these celebrities make from their schools teaching courses that are available free on KZbin. Ha. I’m sure it’s the experience of being around these guys that makes it worth it. If I were to fork over cash to go to a school it would be with Cody Lundin. I’m not sure if he is still instructing. Great demo Jason. Take care.

Canterburys rods are made in China with his own branding. I can get ten of exactly the same rod directly from China for the same price as one of his. Personally I wouldn’t line the guys pockets.

@@QuantumMechanic_88 A little bit of research and Googling, I can get a minimum order of 200 standard size rods with wooden handles and strikers for $122 USD. Makes you realise how much profit these guys are making, especially when the supplier pays the shipping costs too.

I’m still a big believer in the striker is the most important thing! A good striker can be all the difference between good results and assuming the rod is bad. Nice review and comparison brother 👌🏽👍🏻👍🏻😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🥃🥃

Thanks Joe! They are all made in China i believe at 3 or 4 main factory's with minor variations on there recipe. Soft to hard and magnesium and cerium etc. I love Ferro rods. So i have been wanting to do the best major brand comparison i could for You Tube. It was interesting. 😝👊💥💥💥💥😎🤘 always great to see you brother!🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲💯💯💯💯

Nice comparison. I use the bayite rods because I like the softness of them. I can rip off gobs of lava with mine but they won’t last as long. Hope you’re having a great weekend brother stay safe. 👍👍🔥🔥

As an advantage over flint and steel, all of them are better. Each ferro rod may differ in composition but all work well for intended purpose. A dedicated outdoorsman would find an advantage in a particular rod or two but to the average user, each is better than rubbing sticks together. Great demonstration regarding the products available on the market. People can become frustrated with the technique and ease of use when attempting to starting a fire this way. Some choose inappropriate tinder to catch the spark, sometimes the moisture content is just too high. As a back-up fire starter, it has no moving parts and sparks every time, once you learn how to use it properly. Get one, learn to use and keep in backpack. Never be without the possibility of fire again. Enjoyable video, interesting content. Subscribed. Cheers !

@@jasonedwardledburynewzeala9897 Thank you for the reply. Scotland is a beautiful country. The reason I prefer ferro rods over flint and steel or rubbing sticks, is that both of those methods generate an ember which you then have to process into fire. With a ferro rod and correct tinder, as you proved here, we bypass the ember stage and goes straight to flame. Rods have the advantage. Videos on the choice of tinder bundle materials, preparation, and explanation of possible moisture content difficulties make for interesting viewing. Just a tiny bit too much moisture, even the best tinder will fizz and not flame unless you "work the bundle", and that is where the practice and skill come in to play. With fire you can stay warm, cook food and see in the dark. Without fire you are cold, hungry and blind at night. Fire, possibly the first invention of nature that humans mastered, have never forgotten and have used every day since. Cheers !

@@zipfry you make a Fantastic point about Tinder. Both Methods are Difficult like you say, without well prepared Tinder Material. That is such an under addressed important fire making point. So i might see what i can do to address that with ideas in a video. I will have to do some homework first. Any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks for your feedback, very much appreciated brother. 😎🤘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💯💯💯👍🍺🍻🍺🍺

looks like the Uberleben and cheap Chinese Generic win, with both strikers. To me based on what i would expect for the price - China wins hands down bang for buck. If they are the same price then Uberleben all day.

Interesting comparisons, that second rod definitely sounded a lot harder material than the others. The supplier of the rod isn’t necessarily the manufacturer as you know, they will all buy them in from somewhere and sell them on with their own branding. From my own research I’ve found European ferro cerium to be better than the stuff coming out of China. After years of buying different rods I have settled on the TBS Fatboy, I’ve got no way of determining the country of origin for the metal, but they suit me and the way I use them. Once I settled on my rod of choice I bought half a dozen so I’ve got plenty (more than I will use in my lifetime), like anything the material could easily change in the next batch as companies try to make savings and cut production costs.
