This! I've read somewhere that most viewers didn't like that Kevin and Winnie didn't end up together once they became adults. I wish more shows don't normalize main characters ending up together so that the show would be genuine and not sugarcoated

It may be the case that they would not have been suited to be a couple in the end. Even though they were childhood sweethearts, and had some good times together, as adults, they grew apart, they had different life goals.

I can identify w/your statement even though in my case it's not 100% true. I really didn't have a childhood sweetheart, nor one in high school. Didn't go to college till partway through my time in the USAF. Seems like being born "late" has followed me for a long time, starting with the delay in snagging a true girlfriend/fiancee. Not till 1977 as an adult did I "find" Susan, so she's like a childhood sweetheart in my mind. And it's bittersweet all over again--we're 0 (wins) & 2 (losses). Hmmmm.........

One huge moment is missing. At prom night, many couples dancing. Kevin and Winnie enter the floor, trying to find one another, but can't. They just walk right past each other. And the narrator goes: "All our young lives we search for someone to love. Someone who makes us complete. We choose partners and change partners. We danced to a song of heartbreak and hope. All the while wondering if somewhere, somehow, there's someone perfect, who might be searching for us.". Just beautiful and heartbreaking.

A mí me gustó el capítulo que bailan agarrados y luego se van en el coche y el de la puerta de la hamburguesería que se comen a besos. Yo era muy fanático de esta pareja. Cuando discutían o rompían lo pasaba muy mal. Quería mucho a Kevin y a Winnie.

Came here exactly to see if the Accident episode was number 1 after a second rewatch of the series. While the theme of the series is the realistic world, every main character was portrayed as the average realistic person except for Winnie who was portrayed always as the perfect girl until the accident episode. It was the episode that showed that Winnie is just human too.

I find the scene itself to be metaphoric Kevin is on one side of the window out side, looking in to the perfection he desires. Throughout the series he becomes angry at adversity or what he believes is non-perfection. He is always out side looking into the perfection. Also, with him and Winnie they can see each other perfectly but there is still something between them.

There's an air of sadness and tragedy about Winnie. A lot of things happen to her, death, divorce, car accident, moving. She subconsciously pushes him away. He wants to take care of her, but theres a push pull dynamic. I think she has a lot of trauma and can't deal with her feelings. Because maybe if she lets herself love him, he might leave her too.

They perfectly catch how we all feel at certain moments of childhood.. our first best friend, our first kiss with our first girlfriend, school dances, our first breakup and how it absolutely demolishes you but you soldier on, our first makeup, and how certain things seem like theyre earth shattering at the time and not so bad only a week later. This show could deliver more angst in a single sentence, spoken by character or narration, than many acclaimed dramas could deliver over years. The happy family and title are misleading that this is a light hearted story of youth. Winnie, especially, is one of the most complex character I've ever come across in television, movies, and books. The depth of this show could give the Bronte sisters a run for their money and I'm completely incense they've remade because it's not a typical TV show. The way this show could explore complex and seemingly intangible topics is what made it compelling. In the first episode alone it takes on war, death, the grieving process, young love, and growing up. In another episode it takes on the father-son relationship, in another it takes on politics when the kids participate in a walk out to protest the Vietnam War as a form of civil disobedience since they're too young to vote... so I just don't see a remake striking the same emotional cords much less being able to artfully balance between kids losing their innocence that isn't cynical yet they maintain a youthful optimism that isn't simply childhood naiveté.
@kendallrivers1119
@kendallrivers1119 2 жыл бұрын
This is a very astute comment. And to be real the remake at least didn't try to just race swap The Arnolds of Winnie and Paul. It is a different family. It actually looks decent but the problem is they were too chicken to just take a chance and give it its own title. Naming it The Wonder Years has only hurt that show not helped it. You just can't compare to how original and iconic the original show was.

U hit many nails on the head,and your post is by far the most poignant and informative. My take on this show is dat it was a drawn out Vietnam war protest-- after seeing the dad and Wayne on the tarmac and the final line telling Wayne dat the army ( and by extension , the government -- Nixon) is lying ,to get recruits ( can't remember the exact script, but dats the message). Another example was when Karen flashed the peace sign at her graduation ceremony. The other main evidence for my statement is none other than the very first episode,when it was revealed dat Winnie's brother got killed in 'Nam. Dat one hit like a brick. Talk about being broadsided. When the first and last episode were both about Vietnam, and the fact dat its setting was 1970-- at the height of the war, leaves little doubt .... I think dat the producer(s) had a personal, lifelong vendetta against Nixon ( and rightly so) , probably because offspring may have been lost directly due to him lying to Americans,and intensifying the war . This show had tremendous depth and I was left awe and dumbstruck after more episodes dat I can remember. There will never be another wonder years, as I've long said dat , since 1950, the morals and intelligence of each succeeding american generation has decreased exponentially, until we're surrounded by the excrement dat passes for people, music and entertainment of today. The slightest hint of scandal would've doomed one's political career--compare dat with Trump/Stormy stripper and Biden/ Hellboy Hunter..... Thank u 4 your excellent post. I hope I manage 2 give readers some insight as well.

Unfortunately it was planned but in 92-93 fred savage and Jason Hervey had a false accused sexual harassment lawsuit from one of the shows costume designers. Fred, Jason, and the rest of the shows cast and creators denied ever doing or seeing what was accused. Unfortunately the show was cancelled early because they didn't want backlash and bad publicity from it, but it is a regret from the show runners and cast canceling this legendary show. She lost the suit as it was dropped, and fred and Jason were never charged with anything because she admitted it was a lie after lack of evidence and all the refusal. Her interest for money and attention cut short a great show.

Interesting how the first episode had Kevin and Winnie have their first kiss...and the last episode they have their first passionate hug in the barn.

Went here exactly to if the accident episode is number 1. After a second rewatch, that episode became my favorite because it was the only episode that highlights Winnie is also just human and also makes mistakes. All throughout the series, all of the main characters were portrayed as the average and realistic person and although they have their stereotypes, most of them were able to show a different dimension of their character in various episodes except for Winnie who was always portrayed as the perfect girl until the Accident Episode.

My 1st childhood crush. I loved Fred Savage and Kevin Arnold. I was always sad that he didn’t like Becky Slater the same way and if Winnie Cooper didn’t want him I’d take him 🤷🏼‍♀️❤️🥰

Cara from The Lake and Back To The Lake was probably my favorite of all Kevin's "girls." Seems like the one I would have gotten on with best myself. Well, her and Denise The Grease Lavelle. Who doesn't love a sexy, shapely gearhead blonde who's also literate and reads and cherishes classic 18th century poetry? No disrespect to the lovely Winnie Cooper, of course. I'd like to imagine that Cara and Kevin reconnected later and that when he meets Winnie at the airport with his son and wife, (final episode) his wife was in fact Cara. : D : )

that was an AMAZING episode. Kevin spent the entire episode in the museum with Madeleine stalking him and afraid Winnie would think he was going to dump her ....and then Winnie dumps him. the joint field trip between the 2 schools and the very last scene is the 2 busses leaving and going home and splitting on the road going in different directions. Very symbolic. My heart broke in that episode.

I find the I love you scene itself to be metaphoric Kevin is on one side of the window out side, looking in to the perfection he desires. Throughout the series he becomes angry at adversity or what he believes is non-perfection. He is always out side looking into the perfection. Also, with him and Winnie they can see each other perfectly but there is still something between them.

All formidable chapters. But I liked the happy moments of Kevin and Winnie the most. Episode of the first kiss, episode when Winnie says I love you to Kevin in the moving truck and they hug. Episode when they leave school and Kevin tells Winnie "I like you" and they become friends. Kissing room episode and ends with Winnie kissing Kevin on the bridge in an intimate place. Winnie's accident episode with the window scene. Episode of the dance they grab each other and leave with the car. Episode of the restaurant door that they eat with kisses. Chinese food episode where Winnie surprises Kevin with a message and gives him a surprise. Final episode in the barn.

I agree with the list, especially the top one. Still makes me tear up to this day. The only missing that I might add is the one where Kevin and winnie wonder around the dance floor looking for each other.
