I got the Shark Zero-M based on your reviews about 3 years ago and I absolutely love it. I have 4 cats and mostly carpet, and it fits all my needs, and the zero maintenance claim is pretty accurate, I have only needed to change out filters as they get dirty. Thanks for the great videos showing what's out there!

I am a professional housecleaner. I have Sharks and Dysons. I would recommend Dyson over shark. Because: 1. Dyson has wider cleaning path. 2. Dyson has a better dusting brush, which let me stop buying swiffer dusters. I do all my dusting with Dyson vans dusting brush and microfiber cloths. Shark dusting brush is horrible, bristles are too short, to stiff, angle is wrong, handle is not ergonomic, your hand get tired too soon, etc. No go. 3. Dyson head is easier to clean. 4. Dysons hose is not shaking side to side when you vacuum, unlike shark. When you vacuum a lot, it drives you nuts. Good things about shark: price, filters are cheaper and easier to remove, canister can be opened from both sides, which makes cleaning easier. That is it.

Honestly, I have to agree with this I bought the vertex back in April of this year and I do heavy commercial cleaning with it in buildings with excessive amounts of dirt and debris with a mix of carpet and hard floors, and while I don't love every aspect of this vacuum it does a great job. After all this use I would say the Pros are: versatility no hair tangles suction the Cons for me are: weight cord length repairability There are a couple of other things I would add, one is that if you are using this in a commercial setting the typical rugs that you find have a tendency to get the edges grabbed and stuck in the rollers which is really annoying, and due to this happening too many times the belt that turns the front roller on my vertex broke. This wouldn't have been that big of an issue for me if the replacement parts were available however if you do a search for the number that is on the belt you will not find anything anywhere. I ended up getting a belt that works for the apex and it worked on the vertex. The main brush roll on the vertex however is irreplaceable unless you want to purchase a whole new powerhead which is a third the cost of a new vertex and after the 6 months of use I have on mine, it is on its last legs, also the small wheels that keep the head from dragging on the floor have the same fast wear out time as the navigator series because they are the same wheels. Thankfully they are easy to come by. The other annoyance for me is that if you want to use the wand you have to have All the cord off the winder that's on the vacuum. That being said for someone doing regular residential vacuuming these few things should not be an issue and I have no doubt that this vacuum is the best at this time.

As a vacuum service technician, I honestly have to back this up. Sharks may work great out of the box (if you don't mind bagless). However, they are the most unrepairable machines on the market. I can rarely get anything for the Shark brand. In addition, even if you had parts available, the design of the machine hinders repairs in multiple ways. In my honest opinion this has to be by design. Thus it gives Shark the nickname of being the disposable lighter of the vacuum world. I side with brands like Sebo, Riccar, and Miele just for the fact that they are machines that perform well, are durable, and can be repaired relatively easily if/when something happens. Ultimately it depends on if you mind spending $200-$300 a year on a new vac or spending the $700+ on a vacuum that could last you a decade or two. Just my 2 cents.

@@Ruluaman okay. Another vacuum technician here. I love sharks. But I do agree with the repairability. They just aren’t easy to repair at all. Unless you really know what you’re doing. You can find spare parts. But not parts of parts. So you can find cleaner heads and bins. But you can’t find switches and certain brushrolls. I wouslnt say $200-$300 a year though. They will last if you take care of them. That goes for all vacuums. I have a shark that will be 10 next year and it’s still going well. And I even own 6 sharks. They are actually pretty good machines. I own 3 mieles and 1 sebo. Truth is. I don’t really like them. I like the Miele for maneuverability. But it’s heavy. And bags are very expensive. The sebo I just did not like. It was quiet. But the automatic height adjustment just didn’t work right. And brushrolls don’t really last forever. Bags can also get a bit pricey. And the hard floor performance on both the Miele and sebo are bad. I actually have videos of all of this on my KZbin channel here if you want to go look back at come of them. I like the sebo for commercial cleaning. But just not for home use. I recommend the Miele if you want a bagged upright. But it just didn’t Excell in any test I did. Not better than anything I did. And it’s expensive. So they are good vacuums. But if you buy a shark and take care of it. It will last and it will overall give you a happier experience. But if you want bagged. I’d go with Miele. Sebo just ain’t for me. And I’ve seen a lot of people complain about them. But please let me know what you think about my thoughts. I love hearing from people.

When the time comes to get a new vacuum, I'll be getting the Shark Navigator. Not because of the review but from watching the torture my mother put her Navigator through. She would never clean it or empty the chamber. That thing was packed tight. If I didn't clean it, it didn't happen. I had to use a fork to dig out the dirt and the roller was so thick with hair you couldn't see the bristles. But despite all that, that little machine kept working amazingly well and unbelievably never lost suction.

I would love to see your spreadsheet. I have the kirby avalair or whatever it is. It's great for carpets but I do have some complaints 1. I would like a hose quick release for vacuuming up cereal or big items. 2. the way the air hose comes off the motor base makes it impossible to run one side of the vacuum up against a wall. I think it's great if you have large rooms of carpet but I think that most people would hate it for the above 2 reasons plus it's weight. All the extra things it can do aren't really a factor because most people will never take the main vacuum head off and use it for anything else. I did use it to scrub my kitchen tile floor and it did a decent job cleaning but left a lot of water and soap behind. I think a really good steam mop would do just as good with a lot less mess and fuss.

That's pretty epic. I just took delivery of a Dyson Small Ball 2 a few days ago and as I have wall to wall carpet everywhere I'm pretty happy with it. Though, I have to say that using the detachable wand is a pain in the ass. The telescoping tube won't stay stretched and keeps dragging on the want while I try to use it and the machine also seems to greatly reduce the suction power when the wand is deployed which I find annoying, especially if I want to get dirt lodged in narrow crevasses. Also, when I see vacuum tests I often feel that something is missing. The dirt and hair etc that is laid down for the test is pretty sterile in a way. even if it's trampled on for effect. Actual dirt bonds to the carpet fibres more as it absorbs moisture from the air then dries in contact with the carpet either on top of it or in between the fibbers lower down. This means that a vacuum's agitation to loosen the dirt and suction to also pull it from the carpet fibres isn't something that needs to be done when dirt is just sprinkled on the carpets then vacc'ed up a moment later for the test.
@mjc0961
@mjc0961 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the Dyson upgrights have terribly tight hoses for the wands, they're more likely to drag the vacuum around than they are to stretch and let you reach farther away places.

Would love to see how a windsor versamatic stacks up. As an engineer I'm disappointed your testing completely ignores durability. I agree the sharks are great for people on a budget, but if you can afford a nice commercial grade vac you should buy it. Not messing around with a product that dies every 5-10 years is not only fiscally prudent, but you don't have to worry about it breaking or losing performance. The nice features of most commercial vacs- like flatter bodies that can fully go under couches/beds, better suction, and great hose/wand setups that turn off the brush motor, are totally worth it for me.

I use a SEBO Felix and think the height adjustment is a good thing to have. Allows me to use on a wool loop like carpet with the brush lifted up. Can use on very thick plush carpet easier with the height set high as opposed to gravity on the 'automatic height' adjuster brands. On low pile I set the height low and it deep cleans lovely. With regards to big items, when the height is set higher up, it won't suffer snowploughing like some.

I really appreciate the time you put into your tests and the kind of tests you perform. I really need clean floors; it grinds my gears when there is debris on the floor. I do not wear socks so things get stuck to my feet. I get a lot of tree and outside debris on my floors because I live in a highly wooded area. I just spent $600 on my floors; to get my hardwood and thick deep carpets cleaned. Because of this investment, on getting my floors deep cleaned, I am now vacuum shopping. I need a vacuum that has a good wand, that is easy to remove to do a quick corner sucking, giant debris sucking and then be able to get back to normal vacuuming. I have super deep carpet in my living room, so I will need really good suction, that also has good rollers to knock those chunks out of the carpet. I’m conclusion, I was at a loss of what to buy or to even begin on where to start looking for an unbiased review of vacuum cleaners. I am going to go with your number one pick as well. It seems to cover all of the bases I need and I do not mind maintenance. Keep up the great work and you have obtained a new subscriber in me 😊

Thanks for the detailed reviews! I had already ordered the Shark Apex which was going to be delivered today. All the reviews that I had watched made it look great, and when comparing to the Vertex, reviews said there was no improvement for the higher price. Amazon data was useless. I mean...right on the Vertex page advertising Lift-Away and DuoClean, the comparison chart said Vertex didn't have either. Then I found this review and the extremely helpful "cheap vacuums" video. I'm now seeing that the Vertex is the way to go. I cancelled just in time and ordered the Vertex. My primary concerns are suction both at the head and hose and reducing the dust that I'm breathing. Cleaning hard floors would be a nice bonus. (The current Bissell PowerForce Helix is seriously terrible at all of those.)

The Dyson Animal Ball 2 is by far the best for JUST medium/low pile carpet. It is definitely not the best if you have a high pile carpet as it’ll have too much suction and get itself stuck. I don’t care if my vacuum can pick up some spilled Cheerios on a hardwood floor I can sweep and mop. I care about getting those fine fine micron sized dust particles and other nasty stuff out of the deep crevices of my carpet.

Hey I love the channel. One suggestion I had for the future was to include comments on how the vaccum works on high pile carpets. For example, we have a Dyson DC40 that was terrible on our high pile carpet because it would suction to the surface so hard it could barely move, even though it was good from medium to low pile carpet and hardwood. This issue motivated us to get the Shark NV352 based on this video. Unfortunately, it had the exact same issue on high pile carpet. It was essentially unusable. We also got the shark Vertex, again based on this video, and that was able to handle the high pile carpet easily while doing a fantastic job. Anyway, I think others may find some value in a usability on high pile rug test. We are keeping the Vertex and love it.

There's a subreddit on Reddit dedicated just for vacuums so I've been researching and reading reviews. 😭😭😭 Its funny that you say that about the Dyson getting worse and worse because that mimics what the majority of people say in that subteddit.

Get a Kirby. They rarely break and if they do break, repair people can get the parts or you can get the parts and watch KZbin videos. They're so straight forward, I've fixed mine the couple of times it's needed it and I've had it about 25 years. Still going strong.

I initially really liked the shark apex. However, the wand connection with the bottom is now faulty, rendering the vacuum useless until replaced. Unfortunately the wand is out of stock everywhere and has been for quite some time.

For single home cleaning, I recently picked the APEX AZ1002 (Oct 2021) cause I didnt need that extreme full power of a VERTEX vacuum. Plus I like the placement of the APEX lights on both the vacuum head and the lift out wand. There seem to be videos on problems with the APEX Shark front wheels becoming defective and the rollers on some vacuums seem to stop working either intermittently or all together. So dont know the stats on these defects with the amount of APEX vacuums sold. I guess I shall find out over time. So far, knock on wood, the Vacuum works good. One APEX CON for me right out of the box is the short HOSE length they provide. 2nd CON there are no variety of additional attachments to use for the APEX other than the basic 3 provided in the shipping box. I do have some attachments that may work from an older smaller portable corded vacuum. They seem to fit snuggly into the lift out main wand. take care and thanks for the video.

I just bought a Shark Vertex Powered Liftaway based on this video. And yes, I did use your affiliate link (fair is fair, I wouldn't have purchased it without this review). My previous was the Dyson DC41. So far I like it but my biggest complaint is that the dirt bin is tiny! They claim "large capacity" but it's about half the size of the Dyson. It's 9.4 liters (1 quart) compared with Dyson's 1.7 liters. You'd think that means I have to empty it twice as often but it really comes out to more because the bin is so narrow, which means dust/pet hair gets sandwiched between the sides more. But I'm still happy I got it because the pros over the Dyson outweigh the small dust bin: the Dyson review had a lot of complaints that it was really hard to push over carpet because the suction is too strong. That was the main reason why I didn't get it. We have a lot of throw down mats to make it easier for older dogs to walk on linoleum without slipping. I vacuum them all the time and it would drive me crazy if they kept getting sucked up by the vacuum.

I REALLY love that you test the cleaning capabilities of these vacuums so thoroughly and map everything out, but Sharks sound like they are a disaster for longevity and repair and I want to know how you personally have been so successful with them for so long. I appreciate specifically that you actually test whether the vacuum is truly sealed and how easily the hair and dirt clogs it up. But I notice you don’t have much pertaining to how long a unit will last, how well it’s made, how easy it is to repair, or even how bagged vacuums stack up in all your tests. I suffer from allergies and want something that actually removes dust from my carpet without dispersing it into the air, and I want something that I don’t have an ordeal cleaning…I’m really wondering if bagged vacuums wouldn’t be better than bagless because there are no filters to neglect that will eventually cause its death like the bagless ones. I want something with good build quality and good repairability…your videos had me ready to go out and buy a Shark, but after seeing another channel (Performance Reviews) show how cheaply made they are, how easily they can fail rather quickly, how awful their customer service and warranty repair is, and how difficult to repair they are, I am totally stuck on what to buy. I really like what you do and love your videos here, and I really like getting the technician’s point of view from Performance Reviews-but I feel like there are serious prejudices held by technicians (PR sounds just like the owner at my local vacuum shop) and they don’t use data to back it up-while I feel like you have all the data to back up how well a vacuum lasts but are evaluating everything with rose colored glasses that gloss past any discussion of how well that performance holds up over time after a lot of use and how easy a unit can be repaired. So what’s your trick with Shark? Is it that you maintain them impeccably by cleaning things on the regular? One video you noted that you didn’t have the original hose on the one in your house…how old is that unit, how have you made it last so long? I can’t believe that you don’t pound on these vacuums if you run a cleaning business, so something has to be different. I know this is a lot of questions, I really hope this gives you some ideas for videos that will actually help people like me. I’d love to see you collaborate with someone who repairs these things so we can identify which products last, and what key maintenance has to be done to keep them operating like they did for years and years. Thanks so much!

If it can help you: i own a Samoyed dog. Google it you will understand. I got a Shark Navigator Pet 3 years ago. Yes the HEPA filters sometimes you need to clean them. I rinse them and you need to dry them as well. Yes under the brush head you need to remove the small wheels and get the hair out (like every other vacuum). The rest is impeccable. Super strong vacuum, the brush NEVER tangled once even with the crazy long fur of my dog. When i finish i feel the floor super clean and it goes well on the entrance carpet as well. I LOVE as well the bagless feature. Super easy to empty and clean. I did see the other channel as well. My family got a Miele C2 and to be fair, the Shark is better at picking up smalls rocks on the entrance carpet. The Miele head for hardfloor is nice to use. They have their own pro/cons. It is 3 years so far but i do not see any sign of slowing or any problems yet. I use it twice a week in a 1000 foot square apartment. You can google samoyed shedding you will lose your mind. We have big winters here so in the entrance we get a lot of rocks, salt and stuff from the winter as well. I did see the other channel, i saw the price tag (200 CAD) and i decided to buy it even if the other channel is literally destroying Sharks's name. So far i do not have any clue of what are the claims of Performance Reviews. With the price tag of Shark it is normal that more people buy them so it is normal more are in need of repair. It is just simple logic. Anyway, this is my unbiased opinion based on real life usage of my vacuum.

Just get a bagged corded canister or upright. Why are you overthinking this? This channel doesn’t really have much data - some of his parameters are super questionable - like how many online reviews a vacuum had. Like WTF? Why would you consider a vacuum tech as biased? Would you treat a car tech as biased? Someone who has literally physically worked on these products as a career?

Excellent work! Though, I do take issue with this review. I've taken apart a couple Dyson uprights, and also seen others taken apart. They're built like garbage with low quality parts. Their power switches, for instance, are a known point of failure. Shark's fuzzy rollers are great, and their performance per dollar is also quite good. However, I am also concerned by their potentially cheap construction. In addition, there's no scoring for bagged vs bag-less, warranty, repairability, or parts availability. Many, including myself, would argue that bagged vacuums are superior to bagless vacuums. What good is Hepa filtration if, when you empty the canister, a bunch of particles fly around your house again. Also, what happens if the canister doesn't seal properly, which can happen for a variety of reasons. If there isn't verbose part support for the vacuum, it might just end up in a landfill.

Fair points but bagged vacuums tend to be more expensive in the long run and you also run into the issue of the company no longer supporting bags for that specific unit. Most vacuums will have a usability life span of about 3-5 yrs anyway you look at it.

Best canister depends on the type of flooring that you have. If you have mostly hardwood, and some low pile carpet/area rugs get a Henry pet care. If you have more carpet then you need a canister that has a power head. Two of the best options are sebo e3 and miele c3, both made in Germany. You can switch out the floor tools, and turn off the brush roll on any canister.

I really dunno how dyson made the list, I have had 2 dysons in the last probably 10 years and they both overtime quit sealing very well which led to poor suction and poor performance. Yes, I cleaned the filters and tubes in the container regularly. They just quit performing very well and quit agitating the carpet as well, they were great in the beginning. The first one finally ended with broken plastic and the second one finally just hardly picked anything up and did almost no agitation. For the price of a dyson I was expecting at least a 10 year product. The other problem is dyson doesn’t support spare parts very long. I have a Riccar that was made in the late 1980’s and it’s in rough shape but works better than the dyson after 5 years of use. I finally took the plunge and got a new Riccar R40P and DANG I can leave footprints in my carpet again it’s so fluffed up! Plus my allergies don’t get agitated every time I vacuum anymore! I dunno much about the other vacuums you listed BUT I can say I really don’t understand the dyson making the list. We will see how my R40P holds up but if it crosses the 5 year mark and still fluffs up the carpet and works, I’ll be happy, if it crosses the 10 year mark I’ll be elated. Two 5 year dysons equals the same as one 10 year Riccar. I can justify that lol
