Taylor's X-Men Red was what finally got me into comics after years of trying, and solidified Jean as my favorite X-person. It holds a special place in my heart. I've not read a *ton*, but Morrison's New X-Men, and the initial run of Ultimate X-Men are some of my favorites, despite a handful of issues with both of them.

I’m glad to hear X-Men Red was a gateway for you! It definitely helped me appreciate Jean as a character more with her being apart from her Phoenix and Scott baggage. I just started reading Morrison’s New X-Men in full (mostly due to X-Men ‘97). It’s a real wild era

Hickman, Ewing, and Taylor are truly top tier modern comic writers. I remember when people were worried about Hickman doing X-Men and couldn't believe that sentinment was so prevalent. After what he did with FF and Avengers, while I knew it would be different I knew it was going to be bold at the very least, and he sure delivered on that. And now so many people can't see X-Men without the Krakoa era. Incredible lore builder. Ewing is so good at choosing casts for a book. I also feel they have the same character sensibilities as me as a fan of secondary characters. But Ewing books always have great character dynamics. They also are good about revisiting ideas introduced in previous books (even they have nothing to do with the current book). Taylor is just a great story smith. Even on books I normally wouldn't care about, I will get sucked in by what he comes up with.

Totally agree. I could do a whole list on comics I read because Hickman, Ewing and Taylor called back to them

For the Krakoa era, were there any series or arcs that you recommend skipping or are non-essential to get through the run? I am still early on in the era, but am intimidated by trying to be a completionist for an era many say is disappointing. I know there are good things though within it, I just don't know what (outside of this list :p lol)
@Soundout128 ай бұрын
Having read it all, going completionist isn’t the worst, but its A LOT I’d say the essential stuff is - Events (HOX/POX, X of Swords, Inferno, X Lives/Deaths of Wolverine, Sins of Sinister, Fall/Rise HOX/POX) - The Hellfire Galas - Both X-Men titles - Excalibur - Marauders - Trial of Magneto - Immortal X-Men - X-Men Red - X-Force - Wolverine Everything else can be considered non-essential tho some of my favorites include X-Factor, Hellions, Uncanny Spider-Man, Uncanny Avengers, Deadpool, and The two Sabretooth Minis

@@Soundout12 Much appreciated! After starting things like New Mutants and Fallen Angels I fell off for a bit, but now I think I'll use this as a baseline for my reading. Thank you!

Yea I liked both runs of x men red too, as for jeans best costume for me it's the Teal and Amber one she used in the one off giant sized X-men with Emma while searching storms unconscious mind that I'm flabbergasted they've not reused But her red and blue would come in 2nd
@Soundout125 ай бұрын
I'm lowkey mad the Teal/Amber color of that suit was a one-off. Like how did that not become her main look?

@@Soundout12 *sigh..all because they wanted that the X-men in their 70s look a mistake through and through

From the original 60s run, I’d recommend the Lee/Kirby issues, but then skip to the Roy Thomas/Neal Adams issues toward the end of the run. The in-between issues are a bit of a slog. It’s not hard to see why it was cancelled.

Good to know! I need to check that era out

The “only core X-Men books” is going to be hard for me to stick to. But here goes… (Please, everyone, just go read the Kyle/Yost run on New X-Men volume 2. Start with issue 20. The actual Kyle/Yost run! You do NOT need to read Academy X. That was a totally different creative team.) 10- Uncanny X-Men: End of Greys (The Shi’Ar come for Jean Grey’s family.) 9- Uncanny X-Men: Bright New Mourning. (First few issues following Grant Morrison’s “Planet X” finale) 8- Uncanny X-Men 337 (Great character building issue. No fights. Just breakfast) 7- World War Hulk: X-Men (A great showcase for all who were considered active X-Men at the time.) 6- X-Men: Unlimited 3 (1991) Classic 90’s era X-Men. Sabretooth is menacing like we don’t see anymore these days. This issue has always stuck with me. 5- Rise & Fall of The Shi’Ar Empire 4- House of M (And really, just read the Decimation: X-Men: The Day After TPB as well after House of M) 3- The Phoenix Saga (The original or include the Dark Phoenix Saga for extra credit.) 2- X-Men: Deadly Genesis 1- Giant-Sized X-Men 1

The reason they always fuck up the phoenix saga is because they're always basing it off the ultimates apart from the last one which was just embarrassed by its own source material

It would be fun to get in X-men comics but i will not. Because I promised myself, I would only get Spider-Man comics because there’s no way in hell Iam not gonna get any other Marvel or Dc comic books besides Spidey for me at least it seems very stressful getting into superhero comics those damn stories go on forever. So I decided to go hard-core. For only one Character Spider-Man and characters related to him. But yeah, I do enjoy the characters and teams like X-Men but in cartoon format or live action all the iconic stuff that happens in one simply format that doesn’t go forever. If only Wolverine & X-Men could come back 😢

That’s understandable 😆 I definitely want more X-shows

Technically that's the fun of comics. Each story has to continue.

Age of Apocalypse only ran for 4 months. No where near a year. It just took place over 8+books so it's 36ish issues long. Also, I literally forgot that Monstrous arc existed, and I actually read it as it was coming out. It has no business on anyone's top ten list, and definitely should not be ranked above AoA. Just facts. No Morrison? Whedon's Astonishing? Dark Phoenix? This list is bonkers.

Agreed and it’s mentioned it personal 😀 for me AoA it’s first, always, but all these personal lists inspire to read some new stuff what’s the purpose 😉

Silver Age X-Men is very rough going until Neal Adams joins Roy Thomas about a year before the book's cancellation. The Claremont/Byrne run owes a lot to that late sixties Thomas/Adams run.
