Dead Space and Siren are the best that year followed by Condemned 2 imo when I comes to scary. SH Homecoming was pretty fun, but the monsters never scared me aside from the smougs (aka don't fight these)!

I feel like 1990's - 2005 game studios knew how to make good horror games in mass and is likely the golden age of horror games. I can't see 23' being number 1 due to DS1 and RE4 being just remakes of the originals and as I've played the OG's many times I knew what was coming most of the time and wasn't surprised. I will say though it is a good list and think Fatal Frame 2 or any Onryo ghost game is scary imho. I used to be scared of the early Silent Hill games, but have become desensitized to it all. Dead Space Remake is scary (DS 2 is the scariest tho). Also any game where I can't fight and have to hide is inherantly scary which is why I couldn't beat Amnesia. 2003 FTW for me due to SH3 and FF2. Just two 10 out of 10 games back to back in the same year nothing ever hit me so hard.

Fatal Frame 2 and SH3 are still to this day the only two horror games that actually scared the shit outta me.

I think 2017 was it for me 2013 or 2005 cause 2017 had re7 prey and the evil within 2 which I think the evil within series is really underatted but then 2013 had the last of us cause that is my favorite game of all time the 2005 had re4 another one of my favorite games of all time but I forgot to mention 2020 cause the last of us 2 which is also my number 11 of all time

1999 actually considered as the BEST year for Survival Horror because we have 4 games launched at same time and it was the last year before new millenium incoming. The most game I replayed back then was RE3 and Dino Crisis 1 because this game is not only hard but also depend on the RNG to make a good run. Silent Hill was the tough contender, but it falls very quickly once you know the enemy pattern and map exploration, RNG barely exist in that game. Parasite Eve 2 is a bit disappointment because not only the game was easy on higher difficulty, but also lack of horror and tension after playing it again. RE3 and Dino Crisis 1 have their own unique choices to make like Rick and Gail route will affect your route and tasks while in RE3, you have Fight or Flight choices and those will affect the route too. Thats why these game rocked so hard back then but Dino Crisis 1 less loved because of tedious Puzzle and annoying enemies.

Yeah 2017 with Evil Within 2:and Res 7 that is a terrifying year not looking forward to experiencing that at all. Errrrm or Alien Isolation. Tho yes , Dead Space rocks 1,2 and 3 are vicious - playing these on impossible are THE DOGS

Alan Wake 2 wasnt all that good imo. Alans campaign was good but Sagas was a slog. I really wish they would do their own thing instead of copying RE so much.

I don't see how Alan Wake 2 copied Resident Evil so much when they only thing that's really similar is the gameplay itself. The story, the enemy type, the fact that they decided to go Semi-Open world, the light mechanics, the unique changing of reality with Alan's right and the mind place with Saga; all of these features are unique to Alan Wake 2 and not Resident Evil. Just because a game takes a lot of inspiration from Resident Evil in it's gameplay doesn't mean it's straight out copying it. If that was the case, then just about every single Survival Horror game that released post Resident Evil (or hell, Resident Evil itself since it borrowed elements from both Alone in the Dark & Home) would be copying from something that released before it..
