Netflix cancelling their shows too soon is another reason why some people are losing interest in Netflix. Spinning Out, a figure skating drama where the main character Kat struggles with bipolar disorder, was so good but Netflix cancelled it after only one season, despite it ending on a cliffhanger. The suicide in 13 Reasons Why wasn’t surprising for those that read the book. The only issue I had with it was that that Netflix changed how Hannah committed suicide (in the book it’s pills)

Netflix was worth it to me 12-15 years ago when cable was still predominant. Between Netflix and Hulu, I was able to watch my favorite TV shows and movies at a fraction of the price of cable. Fast-forward to 2022 and it's a different story. When you consider all of the streaming and sub-streaming services (Netflix, base Amazon Prime Video, base Hulu, base Disney+, Peacock, Apple TV, HBO, Paramount+, AMC+, etc.) that now exists, you quickly realize that the cost is now equivalent to or greater than that of cable TV.

Hannah's suicide being so graphical in series never made sense to me . In the book she takes her life by drinking pills and I'm pretty sure she specifies that she didn't want her parents to find her covered in blood and to be terrified by that ( i read book years ago so might be worng)
@muttgooch2 жыл бұрын
I think has something to do with it being more visually dramatic than say taking pills. A case in point would be the book a Beautiful Mind. I probably sound like a granny saying this but when I was a teen, there was this manga I really liked called confidential confessions but it was a very messed up manga. One of the stories was about an actually bullied girl (not like Hannah) who left behind some notebooks I think detailing the cruel things her bullies had done to her and talking to them in them and how nobody cared. Because of the number of people who wanted to confront their bullies after death, this manga series was banned at least in the area I was. The Netflix business model is not sustainable, and while I don’t believe they would go completely belly-up, they are definitely destined to be a more minor player in streaming. They seem to think their content is a lot more original and high-tier than it is, and consumers are realizing they ditched cable only to have five or six different streaming services that added up to the same amount of money. Netflix simply isn’t worth the price in 2022, especially when Hulu and even hbo max are cheaper and offer more variety.

What you need to remember is that where as Hulu and hbo max are avalible in the us the rest of the world cant access them unlike netflix. "Glamorized" may not be the correct word but they did change the suicide scene to make it more dramatic, more gory - because that draws an audience. I'm still bitter about Netflix pulling the plug on 'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance' series. I know that there are the factors of COVID or maybe it was too expensive to produce, but the show had won an Emmy the day before it was cancelled.
@AllyGatorAnimator2 жыл бұрын
Apparently it was mostly a cost thing (at least from what I saw), but the funny part about that is that the puppets and sets already existed after season 1, so it wasn't like they would have to remake them and pool in a bunch of money again to build everything from the ground up. There'd probably be new additions of course and obviously costs come from elsewhere too, (like the wages of the many staff who worked on it for example) but still, it's kind of ridiculous thinking that everything is right there, available and ready to go, the story is planned and the characters are established and Netflix basically just decided to shove it all in storage and scrap the entire thing.
@sws2122 жыл бұрын
@@AllyGatorAnimator It's cost and viewership; if it costs 2 dollars to get one dollar worth from views, that's too expensive. Everything you added has a high price and even the old puppets have to be repaired or restored to some extent so it's not like they costed nothing. Even with reviews, Dark Crystal was always a bit of niche show so probably wouldn't worth the effort to continue.
@AllyGatorAnimator2 жыл бұрын
@@sws212 I'd say specifically new viewers to add to that too. Netflix has always had a very big focus on what pulls in new subscribers rather than just because a show had a lot of views. The Claire Foy one really isn't a scandal. Short term memories? Matt Smith came off of Dr. Who at its height in popularity, a phenomenal Doctor in his first two seasons. He was being linked with role after role (sidenote: shame movies were hesitant because he played a more campy doctor, phenomenal dramatic scenes during his Who run) Claire Foy had nothing notable at all before. Smith was a big draw, a bigger actor with more recognition, and acclaim, that's why she was being paid less in the beginning, not complicated at all.

I'm glad I got that college student discount cause $19.99 a month is ridiculous for that mediocre, BS they call content. Netflix needs to step up their game and give potentially good shows a change, rather than cancelling them after one season and stretching out trash ass projects.

The film went over your head, that’s fine. It was made by a Black Muslim woman who was drawing from her own experiences and all the kids involved were in therapy throughout filming. You were meant to be uncomfortable. The culture that teaches kids that sexualization is their primary access point to being loved or liked should make everyone uncomfortable.
@hydrokineticpowerhouse2 жыл бұрын
@@arianna5270 I’ve heard all those excuses and they don’t change the fact that the children were exploited to make that movie just like children are exploited on dance moms and in pageants. I’ve saved a whole playlist about this look for it.
@arianna52702 жыл бұрын
@@hydrokineticpowerhouse I don’t agree that children were exploited to make cuties and dance moms is not at all comparable. Exploitation implies that they were taken advantage of or weren’t given the tools to understand what was taking place. Clarity and communication were central to the process of making cities. Dance moms is literally about traumatizing kids for entertainment very different.

Regarding the animation one; Jorge Gutierrez (creator of "Maya and the Three") was bragging about how Netflix was unlike any other studio as they allowed him to do whatever he wanted as a response to yet another "SUPERHEROES AND SEQUELS ARE RUINING CINEMA" take on Twitter. I mentioned to him that Netflix was not any better as it had cancelled many of its own shows too prematurely and not being as supportive as they claimed to me. He blocked me on Twitter after I said that. Now his show is at the mercy of the weakened Netflix gods. I would laugh and said "I TOLD YOU SO!" but considering Netflix DID have some of the best animated content yet (including all the amazing animated features from Sony, Cuphead, Arlo the Alligator Boy), I legit feel sad about it.

interesting, I'm the same way, have actually been hospitalized and have dealt with self-injury since elementary school, I think it depends on the person and their mentality and perspective, I did not see it as that, what I did not like was that they changed her suicide from the way it was depicted in the book (I'm a book geek and don't like it when films stray too far from the book) but if someone else has a hard time with it, I'm not going to argue with them, I just think it is all perspective and everyone's individual mentality...I do think people went a little overboard with it which in turn made people think it was more glamorizing than it may have been

I've never understood the rage against "controversial" films/series. If we ban everything people may get offended over, there's not much left. Netflix is struggling because of a combination of issues, like killing series too quickly, the covid is mostly over (people stream less), the competition from more and more streaming services, and less contents due to losing contracts with other companies. In other words, it's not a single issue, there are several. Btw, I just checked my own Netflix account. Turns out I pay 50% more than I need to, because I don't need 4k, full HD is enough for me, so I've changed that now. Something to be aware of for others who may want to save a little money.

Well Netflix is losing subscribers for a multitude of reasons, and I think one of the main reasons is they keep canceling their series too soon. There have been a few series that have exceeded their metrics but we're not renewed. Netflix doesn't give any closure on series that people are invested in that they cancel after one or two seasons. Of course losing major licensed shows like the office and friends were major reasons for several people. But the rise of other streaming services as well is causing a major rift with Netflix subscribers. When Netflix had to deal with Disney, they increase subscribers but now we have Disney Plus so people are dropping off Netflix to go to that because Netflix no longer has those Disney shows. With other companies like Paramount etc picking up those licenses for shows like the office and friends they're going to get subscribers that way. As for the password sharing thing, they're going to have a hard time cracking down on that and I do feel like some measures that they may implement is going to lead to a class action lawsuit. Like my mom lives across town from me, they can't say that I'm not at her house watching a movie with her. If I go on vacation they can't say that I'm not in Seattle or Detroit or wherever I'm at watching a show. Are they going to try to do the same thing Google does, where are you log into and account somewhere and they make you verify on your phone? That's going to be annoying every time I turn on my TV to watch Netflix I have to go in and verify that I turned on my TV to do so. That's going to make them lose customers, and like I said probably make them lose money through a class action lawsuit
