Hey, everyone! Austin here. While there's a lot in this video I'm still proud of and stand by, I do feel a bit of addendum is in order. If we’re talking Wilder movies, as in his unique authorial flavor and what makes a Billy Wilder film a Billy Wilder film, “The Apartment” should certainly be #1. It’s not my favorite of his, but I feel I did him a disservice by not underlining that it is his definitive work. Also, “Some Like It Hot” > “Sunset Blvd.” I’ve grown as a man and seen the light. Cheers!

It's fine, I watched this video around a year ago and I has been very helpful. Now I have watched most of the films in this list and I'd say that all of them are woth watching. Thanks for your guidance, the placement of each movie doesn't matter that much. I personally would put The Apartment at number one, but I can perfectly understand someone choosing Double Indemnity or Some Like It Hot or even Witness for the Prosecution. Even after multiple watches I don't love Sunset Boulevard as much aa the four mentioned previously. My biggest issue is that at the beginning we already know what happened, I genuinely think I'd have enjoyed it more if we didn't know what is going to happen.

My all-time favorite is, of course, “The Lost Weekend”- its screenplay is far out. YES, I read the Lost Weekend in novel form; Don Birham doesn’t quite give up liquor at the end; he’s having it less and less though … 😊

For me, Billy Wilder is the best ever. I mean: the guy made Some like it hot, Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Stalag 17, Double Indemnity, The seven years itch. Hitchcock was beyond believe, but it was technique. Wilder had feeling as well, that's what makes him better. And I am always so moved by the fact that he was a jew who escaped Germany when Hitler came to power and tried everything to get his relatives to come to America, but they wanted to stay in Germany. They didn't survive. And still he had the lust for life to make comedy's and make the most of his life. I could never have done that. I would have lived beeing as dead as they were. Billy beat me like he beat everybody else and make the world laugh and cry with his movies. The first "grown-up" movie I ever saw was Some like it hot when I was 12 years old and I was hooked. He made me love the movies, and made me realize that it was a special place for dreams and escape and I still thank him for that. Billy - you were beyond believe!

"The Apartment" is actually my favorite Wilder film. It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly why, but it's probably the turn about halfway through the film. It's like a shock to the heart to see just how fast everything falls apart and while it is a little TOO fast pace, seeming to almost glance over at least one major character arc, I appreciate it for how it treats the situation the characters end up in while never really straying too far from the overall tone of the film.

My experience with classic films has shown that some of our best pictures have been guided by foreign directors. Think of Fritz Lang, Michael Curtiz, Robert Siodmak, Otto Preminger, etc. There’s an edge to them that give the films something more, a gutsy quality perhaps that makes them richer and deeper and, hence, more satisfying. Thank you Billy Wilder, et al.

I get the sense you don't enjoy Billy Wilder films which makes it makes it strange that you watched so many of his films and make an entire video about his filmography. Also thought the body shaming of Marilyn Monroe was very weird! (saying she's not a good role model while showing a censored naked picture of her).
@themediabinge11 ай бұрын
I also feel very weird and embarrassed about my comment on Marilyn there. Not my finest moment. Might see if I can edit that out. As for not liking Wilder films, I think you’re actually right. At least, the 19 year old version of me who made this video didn’t like them. Wilder made several undeniable classics with broad appeal that compelled me to dive deeper, but I don’t think I was ready to appreciate his humor or sensibilities at that point in my life. Years on, I’ve come to appreciate him a lot more. Yeah, he’s a great technical filmmakers, but he’s also so cynical and witty. I wish I had time to watch all of the less popular works over again.

Thank you, Mr. Media Binge, for an entertaining and thorough look at the films of my favorite Hollywood director. You did a wonderful job... There are a number of films I have not seen (much to my surprise), so I will definitely look up Five Graves to Cairo and Ace in the Hole. I want to mention two Wilder films that you did not mention here. But first I want to thank you for expressing what I have always felt about The Seven Year Itch. I actually did not believe it was a Billy Wilder film because when I first saw it (on TV) I thought it was one of the worst films I had ever seen. (I've never gotten through it) The same thing can be said for Irma La Douce, despite the amazing Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon. Simply awful! The two films I want to mention that I love and respect are A Foreign Affair (1948) with Jean Arthur and Marlene Dietrich and Kiss Me, Stupid (1963). Sometimes I think people don't bother to look at films for themselves; they just go by reputation or reviews written when the film first came out. Although Ray Walston is weirdly stalking his wife (something that probably grows even more uncomfortable as the years go by) this film's ultimate message of how women are treated based upon how they are seen/labeled/categorized vs how they truly deserve to be seen and respected is (to me) a humanizing insight way ahead of its time. A Foreign Affair has many layers to it and it's important to understand that Billy Wilder was one of the filmmakers in Europe as part of the Allied forces in WWII. He witnessed first hand or learned from other eye witnesses, the atrocities of the Germans and later the Russians who "liberated" Eastern Europe. He begged the Hollywood studios to fund a film about the holocaust. What a documentary that would have been! They turned him down and that is a sad loss for history. My theory is that he put in portions of what he would have wanted to express and focus upon in A Foreign Affair. If you watch it with a little bit of that perspective, it deepens the whole experience. Cheers to you for making such an excellent film (video) yourself!

I really couldn't disagree more about the Seven Year Itch. It's definitely a ridiculous movie, but Marilyn Monroe's character is only an airhead on surface level and Tom Ewell's (SPOILER) crucially decides not to have the affair in the end (which Monroe isn't even down for from the start). Nicely produced video, but I disagree with one thing the commentator in the video said. Horst Buchholz was a very good actor. He was sometimes miscast, such as in "The Magnificent Seven", but he won a best acting award at the Cannes Film Festival in the 1950s and he was great in several films, such as Tiger Bay. I thought he was good in "One, Two, Three" and I enjoyed Pam Tiffin in that film as well, even though I'm not really a fan of the movie. A director in the class of Billy Wilder (or David Lean who wanted him for "Lawrence of Arabia") would never pick someone they believed was a bad actor. My favorite Wilder films are "Double Indemnity", "The Apartment", and "Sunset Boulevard"--the first two films featured Fred MacMurray, who was an inspired choice by Wilder for both roles.

"The Apartment" is possibly my favorite movie of all time. BW directed many classics, but for me this one hit on so many levels. I would have put it first. I don't think Jack Lemmon or Shirley MacLaine were ever better (and I love "Days of Wine and Roses"), and Fred MacMurray as the ultimate philandering selfish lying narcissist (replacing Paul Douglas, who died of a heart attack before production began) was not too shabby either. Throw in Jack Kruschen as Dr. Dreyfuss. the conscience of the movie, Naomi Stevens as his yenta-ish wife, and at least half a dozen fine performances by other supporting players, and it is cinematic Eden for me, a must-see every New Year's Eve. And Shirley MacLaine's final line in the movie, spoken to Lemmon, in my opinion tops even that of Joe E Brown (also spoken to Lemmon) in the previous year's "Some Like it Hot."

Regarding the movie “ Ace in the Hole”, I wonder if Wilder and Kirk Douglas watched the episode years later on the” Andy Griffith Show” - when Andy and Helen were “ trapped” in a cave and Barney was so focused on their rescue he had them out of the cave in less than ONE day; not botched like that Tatum character, who delayed the cave rescue for days and days until that poor guy died in the cave … The movie’s alternate title was “The Big Carnival”- after several days hundreds of people were showing up and being entertained with carnival rides … 😮😮 I see Barney as a hero, but Tatum is a disguised “killer” …

Very interesting list. Of course, I would have ranked it differently., but I really appreciate the time and energy you put into this. You make a few points that I disagree with, though. For example, I think that almost every Wilder movie has at least a few scenes that are just great, no matter how good the rest of the movie as a whole is. The scene in "The Emperor Waltz" that you despise so much, to me is one of the funniest things about this movie. Maybe, being German like Wilder helps to appreciate this particular send-off of Austrian and Southern German clichés. My biggest disagreement, though, is about the way you assess Wilder's tone as a whole. At one point in your video you say that you wish that Wilder would have used darker tones a bit more and you characterise hiis work as satiric with a great warmth. I have to say I wholeheartedly disagree. In my opinion, Wilder is one of the most cynical writers and directors ever who mainly states that this existence is only barely acceptable if you look at it as a joke. I guess, probably his Jewish heritage might have had an influence in that. Almost all of his characters are morally corrupt or corruptable. Whether he uses this for drama (Double Indemnity), satire (Ace in the Hole) or comedy (One, two , three). They throw out there values at the first chance if they are sure to get away with it or if they can find personal gain in it. Wilder's look at life is particularly acidic when it comes to men and women having to and choosing to be living together. None of the couples in his movies are downright happy at the end, and even if they are happy in there own view (like in "one, two, three") it is mostly because they are too dumb to see the discrepancies. I don't want to make this comment too long, so I will try to finish it here, even though I should probably have gone a bit more into detail. I think Wilders main themes are identity (particularly the way people want to be seen vs how there are viewed be others), men and women and the impossibility of them living together and the bigotry of humans when it comes to there values. While there is often some warmth in his pictures, to me this is still usually undercut by a certain reluctance (mostly from the male protagonist) to really accept the ending, if he survives it. I haven't seen every single Wilder film, but I think the only male protagonist who appears truly gleeful at the ending of a movie is Sir Wilfrid at the ending of "Witness for the Prosecution". Even though he just found out he has been duped, he is extatic, because he enjoys the challange. While he may be surprised by the outcome of the case, he does not suffer long, because this is basically how he views life in general. For me, Sir Wilfrid is in many ways a stand in for Wilder himself and that they share a lot of views about life. You just have to accept the compromise and live on with your life. Maybe looking at his work through this lense helps a bit with appreciating him even more as a director.

One thing you "film critics" always flounder around with is: is it the script, the director or the actor? How Wilder can make brilliant films like Double Indemnity and Sunset Blvd and then put out schlock like "Some Like It Hot" (which I admit I have never been able to get through) remains a question of behind the scenes studio politics. Even in the the films that he wrote or co-wrote, and even if you claim he had full control over the film, he had no way of knowing how it would be received. Most audiences want a nice plot, a nice twist, an exchange of clever lines, some romance between beautiful people and a good or memorable ending. Now, tell me where his bad films went wrong.

Only 1 quibble. If you could watch “Kiss me stupid” and not think it is Wilder’s worst movie, I can’t help you. Awful, dull, unlikeable characters and a terrible premise. (And I liked “Buddy Buddy”) 7 year itch? A classic!

Kiss Me Stupid has some defenders. I thought it was bad with a few redeeming moments.

About "Buddy, Buddy". Hollywood is horrible when trying to remake a French comedy. The 2 I kind of liked had Martin Short.

Great filmmaker. Too bad he sold some of his colleagues down the river to save his own ass during the McCarthy Era.
