You know what I've been doing lately? I've been looking around and finding a lot of "TWO DISC SPECIAL EDITION" DVD's. A lot of them were in print when DVD was new but if you buy the movie now it's only one disc. I started doing this purely by accident when I found both "Die Hard", "Men In Black II" and "Armageddon" in a thrift shop about two months ago. That's when an almost 25 year old memory was triggered: This was a big thing back in the early 2000's and, technically speaking, most of those second discs just don't exist anymore. And if it doesn't exists any more then I want it so that someone has it and I'm more than happy to share.

My favorites: Conan, Little Darlings, Dune Part Two, The Hitcher, Arcane, Project A, Matinee

My #1 release of 2024, in terms of restoration quality, is The Hitcher by Second Sight....The amount of time & care they put into the restoration of this film is mind-blowing, and it's a sweet collector set....Watching The Hitcher in pristine 4K quality is an entirely different experience. In terms of the overall packaging, I'd have to give it to The Neverending Story, based on your unboxing video. I don't like the movie enough to purchase that, but good god is it tempting.

I’m glad I got at least one of these (Conan) and others are on my wish list. When Heath said it’s the best of times and the worst of times I immediately thought “yep, because you can get everything in the best quality but you can’t buy it in person with cash,” but of course I’m only like one of 10 people (under 80) that still think like that.

My releases of the year would be Conan the Barbarian, A Simple Plan, Chinatown, Red Rock West, Breakdown, The I Love Lucy tv series and Criterion No Country For Old Men.

@@CerealAtMidnight I've heard they have a lot of AI touches in this set. I watched a few episodes and the ones I watched looked great but the AI tries to touch up the background faces. If you don't mind that?
@CerealAtMidnight9 күн бұрын
I would need to hear from someone at Paramount that AI was used. Too many people pass these things around as facts, and they're often wrong. People trashed the Terminator 4K and it's the best the movie has ever looked.

4 audio commentary tracks for Conan the Destroyer? I really like Conan the Barbarian, but the drop off in quality for the sequel was absolutely massive.

Kino classics are killing it at the moment with the awesome Summer Rental and Hot Pursuit scheduled for release in the new year and now the hilarious Rhustler's Rhapsody just announced. Own all three on import Region 1 dvd and will definitely upgrade to the the new Blu's. Excellent Top ten review with some great titles in there! 👍

I really really want to see more obscure late '70's and early '80's comedies restored to blu-ray at least. I don't know what's going on with me but my love for horror movies just hasn't been as strong as it used to be. I hope I'm not dying, I'm only 45 years old.

LG was apparently in 5th place in player sales. It just wasn't worth it for them to stay in. We are niche. There isn't really enough money to go around for 5+ brands but it's profitable enough for 2-3. It's just the nature of our hobby. The only concerning part is players aren't like record players where anyone can make one. You need a lot of specific parts and disc pressing plants to make the media. As long as we continue to support the boutiques, there will be a market.

I have a lot of 4K discs. I am not a collector., I have them because the picture and audio quality is significantly better than streaming. I don't own any steelbooks because I dont care about the packaging. I wonder what percentage of people that are still buying discs are collectors, vs people like myself? I am appalled at the prices that discs are commanding today and fear these prices will continue to rise.

SLIVER is a 2024 release. I got my subscriber copy a week or so ago. Blows my mind that its on a ten best list, but I'll move it up in my to watch pile. It's a December 2024 release for Vinegar Syndrome. I'm ambivalent about the Hitchcock release, as I already have the Universal 4K releases, and I don't need additional biga$$ boxes. TALES OF ADVENTURE VOL. 4 can be currently ordered from the Grindhouse Video website.

The US Twister came on a 66gb disc whereas the UK steelbook collectors set had a 100gb disc it has a higher bitrate main reason it had a different distributor in the UK.

Universal did a Deluxe blu-ray Spielberg box set a few years back. It would be nice to get a 4K set of all his Universal films, but very cost-prohibitive.

Financially yes I should tap out, but I'm not. What is changing for me I cannot afford to renew my Vinegar Syndrome subscription next year. I will continue to look for rare movies out in what's left in the wild. I gave up the will and desire to meet women for movies. Movies are always there for me, they continue to be there for me whereas women well, like that song goes are 'cold as ice to me.' I won't even be able to recognize myself or who I am in a world without home video movies. I will go down with this ship. Physical media will never die. I'm sorry I never started a youtube channel to show off my own room full of everything from VHS tapes to blu-rays. I realize 4K is too expensive for me.

Surprised to hear how affordable the Capra set is, even though he is not one of my favorite filmmakers. But Twister? Sorry, but that film would qualify as one of the worst that year. NO Laurel and Hardy from Flicker Alley on the list? Thanks for the overall work this year, Heath. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I don't understand the appeal of the Super Mario Bros set. I mean, sure, it's a VERY well put together release, but it's no different than buying the best written and most finely printed encyclopedia on turds in history. Why couldn't they honor a GOOD film in this way? It's as if it's all a huge joke...
@nicholasthill71519 күн бұрын
if players were selling, LG wouldn't bow out and we would see more companies producing them. That is how growth works. We don't see more interest in player manufacturing at the moment because there is nothing there, financially, to entice such. We are a self sustaining hobby. We never talk about player sales. Without the players, the discs are worthless. It's hoarding hobby and those already immersed in this are keeping it afloat. In another comment, I noted there is already talk by some at Wal-Mart they will be cutting back more. There is no public visibility for hard media. It's going all online. That's not good. Out of sight is out of mind and out of mind doesn't generate interest. We already live in a culture where people watch more film on their phones than they did five years ago
