#10 is flat-out wrong. Sega was severely damaged by their fumbles with the Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn. Those missteps damaged the company's reputation so much that the Dreamcast was doomed to fail. If you want to blame anything for Sega's fall, blame those pieces of hardware.

I think Sega knew that they were doomed no matter what, because of the possibility that Sony might make another PlayStation. So instead of Sega releasing the Dreamcast around the same time as the PlayStation 2, they released it a year ahead of the PS2, so they would have the headstart and get those early console generation sales. But it didn't work, since when the PlayStation 2 came out, it came with one of the most ambitious and marketed feature at the time. DVD playback, which the Dreamcast didn't have. I think the Dreamcast could've succeeded even better, if the Dreamcast came with a DVD player, and still being released in 1999 (1998 in Japan). But I think it was still impossible at the time, since the DVD format was still in its early infancy. So if the Dreamcast released in 1998 DVD player, it would've been expensive af. So it didn't really matter if Sega did a 6th generation console or not, they would've been doomed anyways, thanks to the reputation they got from the Sega DC, 32X and Saturn.

Strongly agreed. Dreamcast was a breath of fresh air. Game gear, Sega CD, 32x, and even the Saturn were the failures. I also remember the dreamcast being released in 99. Not 98 like watchmojo stated. As I remember the date being 9.9.99. But I could be mistaken. Dreamcast launch library was better than ps2 launch in my opinion. Soulcalibur looked better on the dreamcast than it did in Arcades. It definitely should not be seen as Sega's true failure.

The Saturn was an overpriced dud. Not as bad as the 3DO, but that's what I would lump it in with. I think it would have been better for Sega to stick with the 32X (low price and they already had a huge install base of Genesis owners for it) and then release the Dreamcast a few years down the road as their next big thing. The release of the Saturn so soon after the 32X debuted destroyed consumer confidence in the Sega brand.

The Sega 32x and all the different genesis upgrades diluted and confused the market. You had Sega of Japan and Sega USA on different pages releasing competing products and further harming the brand. Just the online play alone was leaps ahead. Sony never really took online play seriously with the PS2, but Sega was already making great use out of online games like Phantasy Star Online, Alien Front Online, Unreal Tournament, Quake III Arena, Every 2K sports game, Capcom vs SNK 2. I know Saturn had already ruined the Dreamcast's chances, but there was so much potential there with the online games.

The Dreamcast didn't 'ruin' Sega, it just forced them out of the console manufacturing business. If I were to pick a console that killed their brand, it would be the Sega Saturn. Despite a being a great console like the Dreamcast, the way they marketed the Sega brand in the US resulted in the Saturn failing in the west: they surprise released the console to stay ahead of Sony and their PlayStation console, and as a result, several stores like KB Toys refused to sell the system. Aside from that, launch titles were unfinished due to the rushed release, which put a very sour taste in gamers' mouths. The final nail in the coffin would be when then SOA (Sega Of America) president Bernie Stolar said "The Saturn is not our future" at a press conference. The failure of the Saturn made Sega consider marketing their newest system, the Dreamcast, as its own brand as not to scare away potential customers due to their lackluster reputation in the west, and for the most part it did. The Dreamcast sold very well, but because of the PlayStation 2's extended capabilities such as a built-in DVD player and PS2 discs having more capacity than the Dreamcast's GD-ROMs, the Dreamcast was abandoned shortly after the highly successful release of their competition's console.

Big flub on the #10 there. If anything, the Dreamcast was the strongest console Sega released since the Genesis. It was everything inbetween that slowly chipped away at the company. The CD and 32X add-ons, the Saturn's failure of a release... honestly the most significant thing that killed the Dreamcast wasn't even its own fault - but rather, the fact that the biggest competing console shipped with a built-in DVD player, which made it a relatively cheap option for households to combine their gaming and multimedia systems.

The Dreamcast may have unfortunately been a cash failure for Sega but it changed my world being able to play arcade exact versions of Capcom and SNK fighting games, and having the Hori fighting stick brought the arcade to my living room.

I LOVED movie pass! even though it was short lived it was good while it lasted. I literally went to see 4-5 movies a week because I worked in a shopping area with a movie theatre and I was in walking distance with two others so I just went to see stuff I didnt even know about. I would just go. Thats where I saw upgrade and it wasn't a bad movie. it was clear they were going to fall real fast so I got more than my money's worth. unfortunately for movie pass lol

It wasn’t the Dreamcast that ended Sega’s console division. It was the last half decade of console decisions that destroyed trust of developers and consumers. The SegaCD, 32X and Saturn all completely ruined sega’s reputation. They released the segacd in 92. Then revised it in 93, then brought out the 32x in 94, in North America, while simultaneously releasing the Saturn in Japan the next day. then screwed over the developers and retailers by having a surprise North American console drop early, in May of 95 instead of the planned day, September 2nd. Not only that, but only 4 retailers were “in on it” for the early release; Toys R Us, babbages, software etc and electronics boutique (the latter 3 are now all the same company). Angering Best Buy and Walmart. And KB Toys straight up dropped all sega products. And it was $100 higher than the PlayStation. The Dreamcast’s initial sales showed that consumers still had hope. In fact, at the time it was the biggest launch day in entertainment history (not just video games, all forms of entertainment, it outperformed the phantom Menace’s opening night) and first 2 weeks in gaming history, they sold half a million units, it took the original PlayStation 4 months to do a half million. but the lack of developers lead to a tiny game library, so after the initial boom, there was no reason for the people who wanted to “wait and see” how it would compare to PS2 to consider Dreamcast. They also, basically, stopped advertising after launch. Sega ruined the Dreamcast, not the Dreamcast ruining sega.

No it didn't. Sega with previous moronic decisions like 32X, Sega CD and Saturn killed segas hardware business. Dreamcast was amazing and had tons of great games but Sega lost trust of third parties due to their previous idiotic decisions the dreamcast could never have fixed
@tristanscatliffe9840

@@MrInuhanyou123 never said Dreamcast wasn’t amazing. I had one and loved it. Yes Sega made terrible decisions like adding ridiculous amounts of add ons to the Genesis and the nonsense they pulled with surprise releasing the Saturn, but they went all in on the Dreamcast to turn their misfortune around and by then it was too late. The Dreamcast didn’t turn around like they wanted and it forced them to go to a software route which obviously paid off.

The Sega Dresmcast was way ahead of it's time, the problem was Sega had terrible timing, having to deal with The N64, PS2 & Xbox & making the games too expensive didn't help either.

Redo number 10! The Dreamcast DID NOT kill Sega. It was the Sega Saturn AND Sega of Japan. Sega of America was using their brains and knew the risks. They even warned Sega of Japan about all possible negative outcomes. But Sega of Japan refused to listen (They were too sure of themselves). And because of the Saturn, 3rd party support went down the toilet (Blame Bernie Stollair). Hell, I still have my Dreamcast and play it from time to time.

Dreamcast was and still is an awesome videogame console, SEGA's choices back in the 90's are what killed the company as a console manufacturer, if in fact a product drained SEGA's money back then was the stupid war between SEGA of America and SEGA of Japan, 32X, Sega CD, etc, etc
