I heard the story of why Cruise got into Scientology, and I can see his loyalty in one way. Cruise is dyslexic. Now, this affects your reading skills, and hindered him when he was starting out as an actor. He turned down roles because he was misreading the writing on the page. His then wife, Mimi Rogers, who was a Scientologist, suggested a course which would help his reading, and "cure" his dyslexia. Apparently, the method of reading he learnt in the Scientology class helped him greatly, which helped him to read scripts and audition for more role, thus his success. So, you see, he gives Scientology the credit for his movie success. So he started attending, but because of auditing sessions, there might be many secrets they now blackmail him with. So I can understand him joining initially. I heard that the basic courses at the bottom are normal enough, but they indoctorine you to get you to pay money for the higher courses.

When I lived in Austin Texas, I met up with a couple of very friendly guys who introduced me to Scientology and talked about all the wonderful things that it could do to improve and upgrade your life. I took one course at their Org on Guadalupe Street across from the flagship UT campus. After going through the hour and a half long course, I started getting suspicious about this whole Scientology thing. The guys known as auditers started noticing my change of heart and tried to stop me from leaving their rented facility. These were muscular guys dressed in all black and they were not pleasant to deal with when you harbor second thoughts. I managed to get around them and ran out that front door never to return. The sad thing is they had my mailing address and I was getting bombarded with their bullshit mail every other day. Even when I moved they would manage to get my new address. A few times they would call me and I would tell them to stop sending me mail and stop their harrassment of me. That fell on deaf ears at first but than when I threatened to call authorities on them they started to back off. That was a real eye opener for me that night back in August 1993.

One of my best friends tried this crap back in the late 90s. He quit because they always wanted money, the reasoning they gave him was he needed to be "cleared", it was a process, they told him. He spent so much money on their "evaluations" he almost went broke before he wised up. Thank goodness he did. It's no wonder so many rich people love this cult, as that's what it is, because you can only afford it if your rich. I remember being so relieved when my friend told me he was done with it. His experience just solidified my aversion to any faith or group that is basically a secret society. My mother wanted me to join the Eastern Star back when, so I asked her what it was about. She wouldn't tell me, so I figured that if my own beloved mother couldn't tell me, then I'd be damned if I joined. The reason I brought up the experience between my mom and me is because Scientology reminds me so much of the OES, Shriners, Freemasons, Skull & Bones, etc. Basically, there's no way I'd join a group without knowing some of what was in store for me beforehand.

Mega-success leaves you with a hole in your soul that is not usually addressed by mainstream religions, which have traditionally concentrated on alleviating the pain of the wretched. The reason I became fascinated with Scientology was because I took the first "course" in the 70s when I was 19. Did some more research, not easy without the internet, and made it my mission to get people OUT. I would HARDLY say I was a former Scientologist although apparently for this top 10 I would have. Worked for one, though, who was OT VIII. Got him to see the truth it was a cult. Took the class with a famous musician who is also out now.
