I don't think the scandal is that Affleck had a relative that was a slaveowner, it was that he used his celebrity to conceal it. He could have used it to teach a great story - "My ancestor was a slave owner, while my Mother was a Civil rights activist. How great is that and it shows how a family can grow and change across generations". Instead HE was the WOKE one. He was worried that this revelation would somehow damage his reputation as a progressive and he pressured the show to censor it. THAT's the scandal.

It was just an accident. He wasn't speeding, drunk or anything like that. It was raining heavily, and the car hit a deep patch of water, then aquaplaned onto the wrong side of the road. The whole thing was witnessed by a police officer who was driving not far behind him. No one was at fault

I'm sick of people judging past people by today's standards. Throughout the history of civilization, slavery was the norm, not the exception. If 200 years from now society agrees that surgery was barbaric, should descendants of the doctor who removed my burst appendix be held accountable?

Just wanted to point out that what Charlie Chaplin was doing with “underage” girls was legal back then as it was common practice for states to exempt people from statutory rape laws if they where legally married to the minor and as far as I know all of Chaplin’s underage marranges were legal. More recently some states have bared all teen marriages but some statues still allow teen/adult marriages and they also generally exempt sex within said marriages from statutory rape laws. This is largely why Chaplin’s fondness for underage teen girls didn’t attract the same attention it would these days as the attitudes and laws have since changed in many parts of the country.

Well, Affleck is right to be embaressed by such family history, but it's hardly a scandel. I'm sure a large number of American's, particularly those who trace their roots back to the earliest colonists can find such dispicable ancestors in their past. Then again, every single person alive today statistically is decended from rapists, murderors, slave owners and slave sellers if you go far enough back in time. The only question is, do we know that ancestors name or has it been lost to history?

The Ben Affleck one was the only one I wasn’t aware of previously. But honestly who cares his ancestry owned slaves. It wasn’t like he was alive or even a thought in his ancestors mind. It wasn’t like he could of told the ancestor hey that’s not cool, let your slaves be free. I understand being embarrassed over their actions but it’s absolutely ridiculous to try and hide it. No one in their right mind would judge him for his 200 years separated relatives who were slave owners. I think he was ridiculous for trying to make the show producers cut that portion out of the telecast. I would understand if it was his parents that owned slaves but it wasn’t.

That is ABSOLUTELY pathetic. Who the hell cares if his grandfather on him moms side 6 generations back had slaves. You all do realize thats the mid-late 1800s right? He had absolutely nothing to do with that and the fact that people would even talk crap or hate on him for something he wasn't even remotely alive for in a completely different time is just disgusting I'm so sick of people expecting everyone to watch what they say or do in order to not hurt your feels. They are YOUR damn feelings deal with them. And stop getting upset for other people that you have nothing to do with. Everyone is just walking around now pointing fingers yelling your hurt so and so's feelings. Well too damn bad!

David O. Russell’s PR team works round the clock to keep all of his abusive acts under wraps. Every day he goes to work, he’s constantly abusive. Yet, because he’s a director and not an actor, no one really cares, so abusive behavior from directors is normalized. And it makes for awful set experiences that go unreported and see them praised as “geniuses”. It’s more rampant than you all realize.

I considered Lana, not Ava,not Ann-Margarett,not Marylin, but Lana as the most beautiful actress in old Hollywood.I followed the story faithfully. And I told myself if Cheryl was defending her mother,I hoped she'd get off. Kind of like Dolores Claiborne,my favorite line,"I don't know how to think about what you did,but I know you did it for me". Selina St. George says it best.

So being embarrassed by, and covering up, being a descendant of someone who owned slaves is more worthy of inclusion on this list than say being the son of a convicted contract killer for hire? And starring in a film that references your father's most infamous killing?

Everyone acts like it's such a bad thing for someone in the early 1800s to have been a Slave owner but back then it was the norm. Yes, in the past people owned slaves but that's over 150 years ago most major civilizations nowadays recognize that was a horrible thing. So, i really Don't get at all why Afleck was so surprised an ancestor was a slave owner that was 180 years ago which is almost an entire generation before Slavery was abolished
