Computer Science has had 150,000 layoffs this past year. It's legitimately one of the worst degrees you could get now because companies are starting to use AI and outsourcing their employees from other countries so they can pay them less. It WILL NOT get better.

Companies are not replacing programmers with AI, AI sucks at coding, but coders love to use it because its like google but faster - but you have to know a lot about the answers it gives in order to realize its wrong and making up shit and to correct it. The foreigners things is true - a lot of massive companies will layoff their talent and then outsource to a much cheaper labor source, but this is often the beginning of the end for many companies. This pattern works when you have launched a product, and its finally been stabilized of major bugs and the major architectural patterns are well in place, and so you can hire a bunch of cheaper, less skilled workers (which is the case when they H1B or outsource these jobs) who just try to keep it alive as long as possible. This sometimes works - If you dont think your product is going to be as popular in 30 years and you aren't planning any groundbreaking/major innovations on it, this can be profitable. But when companies do this too early, or companies have these employees where their strategy is consistent major evolution of product, essentially anything that needs several highly talented programmers with good business sense, the unexpected expenses end up making it more expensive in the long term (time as money - "burn rate" and the effect of compounding tech debt, lack of good communication and visibility, the nepotism and skill faking that is common with outsourcing, and the tanking user experience).

3:46 as a Nurse there is job security but it will break you mentally and physically in most states unless you really specialize into high skill positions where you do procedures and handle one to two patients at a time for a short period of time…Med Surg nursing will probably break you, you are short staffed, people are sicker and need a lot of assistance and most of the time you have only 1 aid on a 42 bed unit which leaves nurses as the aid and nurse all in one. Come to Canada we have better nursing patient ratios and we have a union to back us up. Also don't discourage people cuz if more people go into the field then there will be less shortages. You're cutting off your nose to spite your face by discouraging people to go into it because then you're always going to be short staffed. In Canada you're not allowed to work more than 16 hours. I have been trying to resolve the mismatch between rankings like this and the sour outlook of people who pursued these degrees. I am starting to think that the problem is that these lists measure the success of the people who succeed, but they ignore the people who flounder. The reality is that there isn't a foolproof formula for building a career. There is still this idea that all you need is the right degree, and your future is set. I eventually got a position as an Actuarial Analyst for an insurance company with two actuarial exams passed. Mind you, I had applied to 30+ jobs and this was the only one I got interviewed for. They offered me 65k for my first year, which is lower than I expected but I needed it. It's not a super difficult job, but the exams are quite challenging. I also doubt that there were more than 100+ entry level actuarial positions, even less within the area that I live. I just graduated from college this Spring with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and have been applying to 200+ jobs with no success, even with networking. In addition to people in the tech industry being laid off, What this job market has taught us is that no degree is enough anymore, you need to also have an internship (I really wish I had one), side projects, and/or a portfolio of your skills to demonstrate hands-on experience. In addition, that the 9 to 5 is increasingly becoming extinct, and companies are turning more and more to contract work to save money.

Also graduated last spring, but as an EE. It was my understanding prior to college that internships every summer were imperative and the bare minimum, and in addition, like getting into college, additional extra curricular activities were also bare minimums. It's interesting that it's looked down upon to do the blue collar classes in HS for exchange of AP's, but once you get to college, it's better as an engineer to have hands-on practical knowledge, and the conceptual only gets you so far. I work in automotive, so if you follow that it's already bad for those already in industry, but also I have friends graduating now who are actively searching. So it's a bad job market, you're competing with folks with experience that got laid off, people graduating or graduated between F23 and now, and those you're competing with have varying levels of experiences they had. Also sidenote on the internships, hiring managers measure everything in years of experience, but I often had a mixed bag of either saw my resume and noticed 3+ years accused working experience (internship/part time) or said to me "you have 0 YOE how can you argue for x salary" during interviews or salary negotiations, unfortunately, the pendulum swung from employees during covid back to employers in power due to the economy being so poor, not to delve too much into the political. My suggestion would be to just keep trying, if you're paying bills, work fast food part time depending on your financial/living situation. If you had a decent GPA, were on some sort of team/club related to your choice of industry, and took relevant classes to your choice of industry, you should be able to leverage that or cater you resume/linkedin into something. If not, gain some online certifications in the meantime, or I know some people in the past that graduated during recessions like 09 and 20/21, or now with the market just went back for their masters.

In my opinion, computer programming, computer science, or software development is not easy to teach, especially given the tight academic schedules instructors must follow. Classes move quickly, covering the basics before assigning tasks, and if you rely solely on what’s taught in class, you might graduate without truly understanding how to code effectively. It’s essential to practice extensively, watch tutorials from experienced programmers, and explore different learning resources. Not every skilled programmer is an effective teacher, teaching requires the ability to communicate concepts clearly, a skill many instructors lack. To truly master programming, supplement your learning by practicing, conducting research, and possibly attending bootcamps.

Math grad here. I’ve used AI for some math help to understand things, and while AI is helpful, it’s not always accurate or creative. I’ve had some AI programs solve problems and it doesn’t get it right the first time because it doesn’t understand something the way you may intend to solve. Calculations are a no brainer, computers can do that, but complicated problem solving and proof writing is mediocre. It’s learning and comprehending like a person. AI is currently at the learning stage and needs math people to still be the brains. Some AI also can’t create seating arrangements with a list of people with specific conditions or special cases. AI is good on the human side. I did a debate with AI and its arguments are reasonably sound and helps to reflect your own thinking. It maintains objectivity and ethical respect. There’s still room for AI to grow and it needs a human touch to improve it with math and big minds.

There are four generations of nurses in my mother's side of the family. I have always been jealous of the flexibility of their options. I have spent my career working in the semiconductor industry and have found that most of the jobs in my field are tied to large metro areas. Although I love living in a big city, the cost of living is universally high in any area where I will find a job. Nurses can find high paying jobs in areas with a low cost of living. They can potentially find jobs in any community that can support a clinic or hospital. Even though engineering/technical salaries can be higher, healthcare professionals can come out ahead if they live in a more rural setting. I can think of a few examples where nurses went on vacation to a place, decided they liked it, and just moved there.

Same my guy. Did my first staff year in the ER during covid in NYC and been taking contracts since. Life changing. Even more so when you get your ducks in a row and keep costs low on those tax free stipends. My effective gross income (equivalent purchasing power) last year was ~240k. There is no higher return on investment than nursing. The fact that it makes this list without even considering things such as travel and agency nursing is a testament to how flexible. I've taken off October for my birthday and then both Nov and Dec for holidays and it took me 2 days to find a contract to start in January at $3008/wk, of which ~2000wk is tax free. Job has PLENTY of bullshit and most people probably arent cut out for it, but it changed my life and was the best thing I've ever done.

Currently a freshman in college and I have been extremely ambivalent about deciding what to major in. Initially, I wanted to become a researcher or neuropsychiatrist and revolutionize the field like other psychologists in the field. However, I feel as though I am starting to lose interest in what I used to fancy. Also, there are a lot of factors too. First, time. To become either of those things it takes 12-14 years because of undergraduate, med school, and then residency. In addition, it takes 1-2 years if you want to specialize in something too. Moreover, I would be finishing in my early thirties which sounds so surreal imo because in that amount of time grad-residency, I could be making money. Second, the expenses for medical school are a lot with the average being $235,827 in the U.S. Finally, I have been looking at the investment in psychology majors and their return is not too high from what I have been seeing. I have been debating other majors I like such as chemical engineering, finance, neuroscience, and physics (Yes, I know neuroscience falls in the same boat as psychology, but neuroscience has a slight edge degree-wise with career opportunities and salaries on entry-level). So, trying to balance my passion with income is quite challenging, but seeing this video helped broaden my horizon a little more about what degrees are truly worth it.

MIS is the best! Cybersecurity in particular has less core classes than typical tech/comp sci majors who have to take coding, math and science classes. At my uni, if you’re a Cybersecurity major you can easily add a Business Analytics minor by only taking two classes. The perfect balance of business and tech.

A bachelor's degree in physics is kind of like a liberal arts degree for the technical world. If you get it thinking you are going to be doing physics, you will be disappointed. It can be very hard to market a physics degree (even with a Ph.D.). The value goes up when you take on something else. I graduated with a B.S. Physics back in the early nineties. Most of my fellow students did very well for themselves, but they all took completely different paths through life (Computer Science, engineering, medicine, law, finance, etc)

Well, I mean, what you say is true if you do theoretical physics, but all the semiconductor, nuclear, medical physics and so on are quite easily transferred to jobs. I specialized in semiconductor physics and there are a lot of possibilities in the electronic industry. I think the issue is that most people equate physics = theoretical physics or astrophysics, but there are many more down to earth specializations out there

I guess I'll interject here. Yes, out of all of the hard science fields. Chemistry, physics, biology etc. Chemistry is an amazing degree that is honestly quite versatile. It's not the best though. Majors like biochemistry and physics/math are arguably more versatile. I actually used to be a chemistry major. But just like Shane said, all of those degrees are highly theoretical. I switched to pharmacology and toxicology recently and I'm taking it pre med track. Immunology research particularly interests me so that's what I plan on doing. Also, as far as the chemistry major goes, multiple chemistry professors have told me that changing my major was a wise decision because it is so theoretical. I really enjoyed the video though. Keep em coming Shane

Find full time employment work a few years, Make connections. That way you can be more knowledgeable and strategic about what major would line up for your life goals SPECIFICALLY. These majors listed require those with specific talents. Not everyone is cut out for that line of work. Forcing a square peg through a triangular hole is a recipe for misery. And half of these majors have terrible job prospects for current grads. Shane is out of touch.

You don't have a choice imo. You need to change your degree before any more money is spent on Computer Science. I got out earlier this year, and we're starting to hear it get worse. @motherclucker1235
@motherclucker1235 4 күн бұрын
@mooncake6157 so long as you haven't paid into it, you can't still probably cancel your admission. I would actually recommend that. There's no degree i know of that is worth it for the price, certainly. Even if I had a bunch saved up for college, I wouldn't go. I recommend the air force or a trade. I say air force because it has some of the best benefits, and the jobs within the air force transfer very well. Everyone I've ever known who joined the Air Force said they loved it. I myself am planning to join. You can sign a 4 year contract, and when you get out college will be free if you want to pursue it. You can sometimes do college while you're in the military, too. You can work on your core classes (math, science, social studies, english), then after the 4 years, you can go to college full time and only have to do the main classes for your degree. I dont know too much about trades, but they're a lot cheaper and easier to get into than college. The training isn't as long, and you can start making money immediately. If you join a union, you'll get really good benefits, too. One trade I would recommend you stay far away from is truck driving. It's too expensive, and you're gonna be gone for months at a time.

Shane is absolutely spot on when it comes to computer science. The way I seen people talk about artificial intelligence is that like most people have absolutely no idea how AI works and what its capabilities are. When I say artificial intelligence, I’m talking about the current approach, the prob based transformer architecture models. These systems are inherently very, very bad at logic based problems, which is a completely different approach of artificial intelligence in itself. So no, don’t go into the field if you don’t enjoy it. You’re gonna suffer.

Computer science is Not software engineering. Having a CS degree will not make one employable today considering that tech employers today dont want to or have the resources to train cs grads to be productive software developers/engineers! Companies have thousands of experienced SWE to pick from todat due the recent mass layoffs in tech the pasd 3 years. Entry-level jobs for cs grads have almost vanished.

Remember, only the degree is worth it. all those classes that you take is meaningless. You are better learning them yourself. Pick a college that does require you to go to class and give out free grade

@katsumisu123 maybe, I don't think computer science as a field of study is going to die, Technology and computers are the future, but I think some areas of computer science will die or change so much like software engineering, while other fields like AI will become more popular and relevant.
