The idea that "state-owned companies are inefficient" is just plain stupid. In Russia most of the private companies that went bankrupt were bought by Rostech, and are now prosper under one wing. It has state-owned Gaspom and private Novatek and Lukoil that have virtually the same efficiency. Many private companies were poorly-managed and died in 2008, only to be replaced by state-owned business, that is guaranteed from the failure. And some natural state-owned monopolies are doing much better job than the private ones in other countries, compare RZhD and US railway companies, or Rosatom and Westinghouse, or compare the pricing of the state-owned Russian energy sector and private-owned European one. Back in 1990s most of the companies in Russia and the ex-SU went private, and look at what happened to them and the industry as a whole. Now why this idea is stupid, this is because the efficiency depends on whether the company is managed right, or whether it's not, but the sate-owned companies have 2 advantages (1) they are transparent for the government, (2) they cannot fail because they have the government support. Which mean that this part of the industry cannot just disappear overnight like it used to be in 1990s. Especially in the very base industries like transport, energy, natural resourses, chemistry, and metal, state-owned companies can be just as effective, as the private ones, and the income will be accumulated in the budget (at leas 51 % of it), not in the fat cats private pockets. Whoever says that "state-owned companies are inefficient" is delusinal and is under the influence of the free-market ideas, that were proven right many times AND were proven wrong many times.
@vulgarisopinio2 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct. It’s all about management regardless whether the company is fully state owned (like Rosatom), state controlled (like Gasprom), or fully private ( like Lukoil). But the advantage of state participation is in its support of the company if and when needed.
@RussianPlus2 жыл бұрын
it's been tried many times. When state-run companies run out of money they demand more money from the government. When commercial companies run out of money they change their strategy, get rid of inefficient people and branches. Commercial companies are driven by profit. State companies are not driven by anything. That's why Tesla, Apple, Nvidia, Tinkoff, Yandex, Google are successful commercial companies.
@Itoyokofan2 жыл бұрын
@@RussianPlus When commercial companies run out of money they either take it from the government, or blow-up end of story. Also you compare giant successful private companies (who suck government tit too). But why won't you compare private and state-owned energy business? Who have the long-term revenue? Like Toshiba for example, who is about to blow up because it failed in the nuclear energy sector despite using to be successful electronic company. Compare it to Rosatom who is successful and profitable. Also Tinkoff is successful, but it's a fluke compared to Sber. And if you look at Kalashnikov concern it was for example cleansed by the government, and is more advanced, diverse, compact and profitable. So the argument that government companies can only suck money if they fail is wrong, they can be successfuly reorganised. And the major way to successfuly restore the state-owned company is to make it produce the goods government wants, and in the amount that government wants. Private sector can rarely achieve such good conditions when they fail. Oh, and don't forget the shell oil bubble that is about to burst in the nex 10 or so years, when dosens of private companies just blew-up leaving investors (like pention funds for example) in the minus. It is estimated that the whole sectir is in 300 bln $ minus. Very successful, very profitable for the state/investors/citizens. Compare it to Gazprom that is successful and profitable without heavily relying on the stock investments, and this company cannot burn overnight leaving the investors with nothing.
@Itoyokofan2 жыл бұрын
@@RussianPlus Oh, and btw >Commercial companies are driven by profit Which is exactly why they cannot be allowed to participate in the infrastructural businesses like railroads and energy sector. Just compare Chinese high-speed rail network and what it's doing to their economy and the US ones and what they get for having 3 money-hungry networks. This is one of the reasons the factories left to Asia from the US. The only ones who won are few big businesses who don't even pay taxes to the US budget, and the ones who lost are millions of households and thousands of small-time businesses. While in China small-timers are the drivers of the nation success.

Measuring a country's GDP by "nominal GDP" is pointless as you are effectively comparing apples with pears. @clivewakley39012 жыл бұрын
@@tomaslenkauskas497 Hi Tomas you are both right and wrong. There are two ways to measure GDP - Nominative and Real. Let me give you an example:- Imaging a McDonalds restaurant in New York and a McDonalds restaurant in Moscow. They both sell exactly the same burger. On Monday (for example) the New York Restaurant sells 1000 burgers at $1 each. The Moscow restaurant sells 2000 burgers at $0.25 each. According to Nominative GDP New York sold $1000 worth of burgers (1000 x $1) and Moscow sold $500 worth (2000 x $0.25). In Nominative GDP New York's GDP is twice as big as Moscow's. BUT according to Real (sometimes called "Price Parity") GDP Moscow sold twice as many burgers as New York - it's Real GDP is twice as big as New York's. Nominative GDP does not measure the quantity of production only the value in the country concerned. Real GDP measures relative quantity - the quantity of goods produced in country A against the quantity of goods produced in country B.. According to the US Government in 2020 Russia had the 6th largest economy ($3,875,690,000,000) in the world and Italy the 12th ($2,322,140,000,000) when measured in Real GDP or actual production. This makes sense as Russia's population and industrial/agricultural base is far larger than Italy's. I attach a link that explains it further: www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/field/real-gdp-purchasing-power-parity/country-comparison I hope this explains the difference, Regards.

Good video. Russian stocks have very low P/Es compared to similar US companies. I like Lukoil because it is cheap and has a good dividend. They will do well as the Western companies pressure their oil companies to reduce exploration. They are shooting themselves in the foot. Russia will benefit. Gazprom is part owned by the Russian government, Lukoil is not. I think you may confuse people by saying these companies are "private". By saying private I think you mean it has no government ownership. Normally people take "private" to mean it is not publicly traded on the stock market. I think it would have been helpful to put the ticker symbol of these companies in case people are interested in looking them up. In the US you buy them with the symbols: Sberbank of Russia (SBRCY), Norilsk Nickel (NILSY), Yandex N.V. (YNDX), PJSC LUKOIL (LUKOY), Public Joint Stock Company Gazprom (OGZPY).

🤔Hey, great report, Slava - Always positive reporting. I don't know why the West, like the U.S. and the UK, hate Russia so much. I wish the world countries can find common grounds to get along. Live and let live. Respecting and appreciating each other differences is a plus + plus for everyone. If we could focus and improve the quality of life for everyone and the peaceful and quiet enjoyment of its citizens should be paramount. Corruption and the obsession with acquiring power only destroy us all. Russia needs to focus on itself and its people and invest in its future. Corruption is cancer for every country. Diversification and innovation are the roads to success. Remove itself from to old Soviet Era mentality. Russia is large enough, it does not need to incorporate other states in the country. The problem with that is what is happening in Ukraine where companies, nuclear plants, etc., are being used against Russia. Keep everything in-house always, promote a diversified market ... Keep up the good work reporting constructive and non-political videos. 👍👌

In russian conditions, state owned companies, especially those, that are not public and thus - free from focusing on profit, are much more efficient and good for the employees. At least in the resource and heavy industry sectors. Rosatom, RZHD and others would collapse, if they were owned by some greedy businessmen. Companies like Nornikel should be nationalised, otherwise they would destroy environment too much.

Thanks that was a great list and info. Sadly the things that Medvedev mentioned is also exactly what prevents Russia from creating new innovative companies like Spotify etc. I belive it is a big chance for anyone doing a startup tech company in russia that administration, corruption and mafia will stand in the way. Like you say, russia has a a lot of natural resources, very educated and young population and many citizens. There is no reason why it wouldnt have a better general standard of living than lets say Scandinavia, if it wasnt for corruption on all levels.

The things you are saying is true also for chinese companies. It is adviced to not use chinese security and some technology like mobile phones for the same reason as with russian.
