Hi Daniel, I just loved the way you play the chords and also your erudite style of presenting your Harmoniums. I wanted to purchase a GOOD harmonium here in India, but certainly found your video very informative to make an informed choice. Thanks for such informative video.

The coupler is essential when you’re playing the instrumental part of a song. Yes chording makes you look professional, but with the coupler, it makes the instrumental part of a song sound even more beautiful/ complex. Also you don’t need that much effort to push the pakka, chording and the coupler on. I have a pretty old harmoniam, so know this experience. So, the coupler is not “bling” it is very essential to the harmoniam

It's quite literally a harmony (an octave) of a harmonium. Agreed that it''s a very desirable option.

@@ahamadromen I'm looking online, as well. There is a dominant maker on eBay, but I've purchased all my instruments in person. Wish I knew which makers were reliable in the "affordable" range (trying to stay close to $300).

What Daniel is playing is a superbly crafted harmonium. I just acquired one. It's Bhava by Old Delhi Music. They solved the coupler's alternative using a simplified solution. The air can be passed through two set of reeds. The first two stoppers control that. I believe the two notes are an octave apart. It creates the same effect as the coupler, and better, because coupler is a more complicated mechanism.

Thank you so much for posting this! I have been trying to figure out how to choose a harmonium, and there is little information out there. This is super helpful, and I will probably buy from you. Peace

I have just ordered a harmonium manufactured by a company called Maharaja Musicals. It has 42 keys, 9 stops, 2 reeds and a coupler. The website I ordered it from claims there is no lag in the keys, and it's tuned A440. I am going to use it to play Medieval European music, because it's cheaper and easier to play than a bagpipe or a hurdy-gurdy.

Excellent information. Thank you. By the way, if you truly have an OCD ear, you'll likely find that a 432 Hz A is entrancing. While Herz or, as it was previously known, cycles per second is based on an arbitrary time measurement-the second-432 Hz is a fascinating number. It is a sum of four consecutive primes: 103 + 107 + 109 + 113. It is exactly three gross. (A “gross” was a traditional unit of measurement of 144 or 12 squared.) An equilateral triangle whose area and perimeter are equal has a square root of 432. These and other natural measures are associated with 432 Hz, and many claim that the frequency possesses more natural healing properties, which would seem a quality that would lend itself to Kirtan.

QUESTION: on a harmonium [with no stops, suitcase style], what notes are produced when playing one key (e.g., C key)? I presume the harmonium produces C (in the pitch selected), it's octave (8th), plus it's 3rd or 4th or 5th or 6th; however, it would be great if someone can confirm what additional notes are produced when just playing one note (e.g., C)? Thank you.
