According to Isaac Hayes III, his grandfather had actually had a stroke that took his ability to speak, and for whatever reason, his PR representative gave the excuse that he was mad about the Scientology episode of “South Park” as a means of getting him off the show without coming forward with the news of the stroke. And that honestly makes sense to me. I just wish they’d told Matt and Trey about the situation, ’cause it would’ve saved them from needing to make “The Return of Chef.”

i personally find family guy much worse than south park, because south park is usually on the good side with harsh social commentary towards racism and antisemitism whereas family guy is LITERALLY antisemitic and racist, portraying it in a way that makes it look good. Whenever South Park is controversial they (USUALLY!) make it pretty clear that it is a BAD thing (eg represented in the entire character of cartman) I mean that show even created such terms as "TOKEN" character. there is a BIG difference.

@Summer06x9 жыл бұрын
Brony Gamer that's really strange because Family Guy is extremely offensive, mean spirited and the best example of white male middle class supremacy in our western world. if south park criticizes something it's made so that you can clearly see who the evil guy is and that is portrayed so. most of the offensive jokes in family guy are made by the main character which we as the viewer are supposed to empathize with whereas in south park our main characters are thrown into offensive situations, they realize are not good and are so portrayed as the only real "thinking" individuals of their entire town. EG Cartman is the worst character of south park and is portrayed as such, he is supposed to be hated by the audience and our "good" main characters. If you would put Cartman in Family Guy he would basically be Peter and and the baby(forgot his name) combined who are the "stars" of the show and so portrayed in a more positive way than the "fat" sister. (the best example is also how family guy dedicates an entire episode to poke fun at jews while the entirety of south park criticizes cartman for being antisemitic with kyle as a hero)
@mgeiger23419 жыл бұрын
I agree. South Park at least has some good morals and doesn't use excessive forms of violence, meanwhile family guy goes overboard with violence, shitty jokes, and morals like if you're in an abusive relationship, stay in it so the abuser can benefit from it. While some enjoy new family guy, I personally don't like it.
@metademetra9 жыл бұрын
Also Trey Parker and Matt Stone seem to actually know how to talk about hard topics. Seth McFarlane just thinks he is right about everything, when really he has no idea what he is talking about. Example: Seahorse Seashell Party and Screams of Silence. In SSP, Meg finally stands up to her family's abuse and calls them out on their behavior. The episode's climax involves the entire family devolving into fighting. The episode ends with Meg thinking that her purpose in life is to take her family's crap so they don't turn on eachother. Moral: abuse victims should stay in abusive relationships for their abuser's benefit. Seth realized his error and made Screams of Silence to cover his ass...but made the issue worse by then suggesting that people who stay in abusive relationships are all stupid. Both of these episodes show Seth McFarlane has no real idea how abusive relationships work, but he is still insistant on giving his two cents because he can. Trey Parker and Matt Stone also talked about abuse, but they did a "sillier" version of an abuse story by having the worse abuse come from a prissy dad that just likes to bitch slap people. They were never saying anything big with the episode. (edit) Scratch that, Seth knows that abuse does not work the way he is portraying it, he was giving a middle finger to his viewers

Animat wasn't kidding when he said that the censored 11 where out on boot leg videos. I actually watched one of then called "jungle jitters", and "all this and rabbit stew" on a dvd called "100 warner bros cartoons." as a kid. Out of all of the cartoons that where shown, theses left me the most confused. Like I honestly thought, "why do they look so funny?" "Why are they acting so funny" "Where's the joke? Usually these cartoons would have a funny joke, but this one seems to keep, going and going." I was legitimately confused. And when I discovered that the whole joke revolved around the idea that "they are black" I wasn't amused. Hell even my younger siblings watched it with me, and they thought that "this was stupid."

So since the release of this review, I finally got a chance to see Song of the South. And I must say that Uncle Remus himself is not racist. The problem is that he's a servant on a southern plantation, and the movie seems fine with that. I definitely see why people would be mad at this movie, but I don't think it should be hidden for the public to see. I say Disney releases the film as a straight to DVD movie with a little opening akin to the one on the Looney Tunes Censored 11 that explains how this film is a product of the time. And as much as Disney and the African American community WOULD like to forget this film, that isn't going to be possible. Because of how legendary the backlash against this movie is, the public has become curious about the film and has gone out of its way to find out what is so bad about it. And I say we should be allowed to see what problems this movie has and make our own judgements about its content.
@saribeepo.o51118 жыл бұрын
The problem is people are ignorant. First of all, video is after the civil war so not a slave. Second of all, if these people weren't so worried about confirming victimhood and gave a crap about history they'd know that many house slaves were actually treated well, and chose to remain in the employment of their former masters when slavery was abolished.
@metademetra8 жыл бұрын
Sari Beep o.O I feel like that should have been established in the movie. Something along the lines of "We hired these people after the Civil War. They've been working for us ever since." It would make the implications of the movie much clearer.
@saribeepo.o51118 жыл бұрын
***** Well back then the majority of society wasn't run by SJWs. Back then, most people had to see racism before they started screaming racism. So, obviously, in the video, the'd see this happy black man, singing and doing what he does, and that was enough to know he was being portrayed in a respectful, meaningful way, therefore no racism. Notice it was just some nutcases who didn't seen the movie and/or were people specifically paid to go around finding racism wherever they can that caused an uproar?

The Jynx controversy was so dumb on my opinion. Japan doesn't even know what "blackface" is, why would they use it? Where have you seen a black woman with naturally straight white hair? Jynx is primarily based on a Nordic princess because of its Ice-Type. The blackened skin is there because Nordic legend states that a princess' skin turns black because of the cold. Furthermore, Jynx fulfills the stereotype of the "fat lady" in the opera with the large circles covering her breasts and long red dress, who are often depicted as vikings. Jynx is in no way an offensive design unless you happen to be terrified of operas and Nordic princesses.

+Genesis Calderón (ZimVader0017) Yes! Someone who understands! Jynx is also based on ganguro, a 90s fashion trend in Japan where girls and women would bleach/dye their hair blond, darken their skin, and wear light makeup as a form of rebellion toward the Japanese standard of beauty, ebony hair and ivory skin. They're not racist but they're showing admiration; Jynx can be considered a testament to that. She is a Pokemon with a unique and quirky design, and not once does anyone in-universe mock her for the way she looks.

I honestly think people today are way too sensitive. Some of these I can understand, but many are just dumb. For instance, criticizing a movie without watching it? What the chickensex? And in many other cases, people will just have to learn how to take a joke. I've seen people poke fun of swedes a lot, and I usually don't mind. Heck, every time a Swedish character is in the Simpsons or Futurama they are what some would call offensive stereotypes, and I just take that as the joke it's supposed to be. And censoring South Park? Why? They may be shocking and bizarre, but they have good morals. They are criticizing what many dare not to speak about but that needs to be brought up. Many people should really grow a spine and learn to separate pointless offensiveness from harmless jokes or satires criticizing the issue instead of being part of it.

From what I understood from reading about the history of Song of the South, it was to take place after the Civil War, when a lot of former slave owners allowed their former slaves to still live on property since many of them had nowhere else to go. They even went as far as to improve their homes and give them their own homes to live in besides the standard, cramped slave homes. The actual film NEVER clarified that fact, which was the biggest mistake Disney made in my opinion. The rest of the film is fine in itself, just the questionable content is the uncomfortable part.

While Song of the South has always been controversial and problematic, I think it's overall reputation (and Disney's) would not be nearly as toxic if Disney had released it on DVD in the early 2000s (possibly as part of its Walt Disney Treasures series) with an introduction putting the thing into historic context and explaining how it's offensive depictions do not reflect what Disney is today. They could then have a documentary talking about the making of the film, and it's reception over the years. There may have been some media fuss when first released, but afterward I think the movie would have just slowly faded from people's minds since, with the exception of the animated segments, it's so dated that most of today's children wouldn't want to rewatch it over and over. However, by not releasing the movie, it's developed a notorious status as the "racist Disney movie that got banned." The controversy and the lack of home video release has made the film the thing of legend. Whenever some lazy clickbait writer wants to discuss Disney controversies, you can guarantee that Song of the South will always top the list due to it's status as "the film Disney does not want you to see!"

For the Porygon episode, the news network in Japan showed the seizure clip even after it already caused enough to the Pokémon audience. What idiots. That being said, Pikachu, everyone's beloved mouse mascot akin to Mickey Mouse, was the one who did this! But they couldn't remove the very face of Pokémon, now would they? Another episode, "Legendary Island Battle! Barboach Vs. Whiscash," never saw the light of day because of all the earthquakes in the Japan, and that showing the episode would be in bad taste.
@Boltscrap9 жыл бұрын
sakuraslicer19 Reason why Porygon has not appeared is to not remind people about it. Actually nurse Joy is to blame, she activated the anti computer virus vaccine that sent those missiles.
@pinkduskstone15439 жыл бұрын
Boltscrap It's been almost twenty years, and Porygon should appear in an episode that redeems its reputation and humble out Pikachu! This whole Porygon fiasco is already old, and the "Arnold Betrays Iggy" effect (removing a character from the show because of another character's faults) has to end now! Nurse Joy launched those missiles, but she didn't know that the main characters were in the computer. Pikachu blowing up all those missiles was the very thing that made the explosions happen themselves.
@mckenzieeby69719 жыл бұрын
sakuraslicer19 Yeah but in the case of Arnold Betrays Iggy, it wasn't Arnold's fault, the "betrayal" was accidental and Iggy was being a brat about it and it implies that he was sorry about blaming the wrong person rather than being a brat (I'm not allowed to cuss) to Arnold. Pikachu was the one at fault but what would they do other than make sure they don't give Pikachu that effect people still remember that episode and the best to ease the incident is to not have the titular Pokemon featured in the episode, ever again rather than taking the five main characters (Ash, Pikachu, and Team Rocket) out and effectively canceling the show.
@pinkduskstone15439 жыл бұрын
McKenzie Eby To be more specific about "Arnold Betrays Iggy," Sid and Stinky were the ones who caused the conflict of the Hey Arnold episode, and Iggy, who had a chance to be in the spotlight, had it all taken away from him by the end. Porygon didn't do anything wrong, and it's been too long to keep brooding on about that episode. Porygon needs to star in another episode, as well as its other family members, and save it from the bad publicity caused by the series mascot. The creators tried to make us forget the GS arc, and we never did, so why forget Porygon?
@MacandBloo4ever7 жыл бұрын
+DarkStone94 +McKenzie Eby Neither Pikachu, nor Porygon and not even Nurse Joy are to blame for the Pokemon Shock. You don't blame characters for controversies. Everyone knows it was the animators' fault. THEY are the ones who didn't know the flashing lights would cause seizures.

I had Wabbit Stew along with a few other public domain Warner Bros. shorts on VHS as a kid. And as a sheltered 90's kid, I didn't think much of it. To me, the black character was no different from Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam; it was the same type of character, and the color of his skin had nothing to do with anything. It wasn't until I watched it again many years later, old enough to understand the historical context and the concept of stereotyping, did it raise an eyebrow for me. Even then, I consider it one of the less offensive cartoons of the Censored 11.

Honestly I think the unspoken reason why Disney censors the hell out of Song of the South is that while it does have the controversy of possibly glorifying slavery, it’s also a pretty lack luster film. Other then the songs and animated parts, the main live action story itself is certainly not as iconic as Marry Poppins or Snow White. If it was they’d probably just have a celebrity guest star address the issue before the film or even just edit in the time period it’s set in(kind of a reverse black centaurettes from Fantasia). But since it’s only an okay/subpar film with a lot of controversy means too much of a flight risk for only a minor profit

"They considered it a win for the terrorists" okay, people what would you do if you made a cartoon, and a group of people contacted you saying that if you don't remove a character from it in the next episode, you'll be dead.

Like the rest of your videos this was a great top ten, a couple of the controversies I wasn't even aware of. I must say though, I was a bit surprised that the Drawn Together series didn't make it onto the list, then again I trust your judgement more than my own. Keep up the great work!

The Ultimate Sagavan I felt that the real criminals were the animators, no one didn’t even double check if they should include or edit that flash. Pikachu and Porygon are not the criminals in this situation.

It just occurred to me. What's stopping Disney from editing in a disclaimer at the start of Song of the South clarifying that it's post-Civil War and was not intended to glorify slavery? You know, the same kind of thing that Warner Bros managed to do with its controversial cartoons and that Disney itself now does for some of its older films on Disney+?

Given the flashing prior and the intensity communicated by the way scenes were framed, the final Pikachu shock seems more like the straw that broke the camel's back than the sole cause. It's the one bit of stimulation that finally triggered said seizures.

Porygon-Z looks like it's having a seizure in it's sprite animation so they aren't really trying not to remind people of the episode it seems to be the opposite...

Song of the south needs a rerelease because it's a legitimately great movie, I'm so tired of disney completely ignoring it and acting like it never existed, they need to own up to it and finally rerelease it on disney plus and on dvd/blu-ray (and not to mention that it's technically educational and historical too)

In my country those Looney Tunes episodes were not even banned and they got shown regularly on CITV especially the Indian, African and Camptown Races on the Missasippi episodes. On our version of the Rupert and the Frog Song VHS we even had a Reggae music video with questionable slaves working on it. The UK got away with a load of things. We even had Song of the South on VHS here taking it to the next level from the BBC TV showings of it. I guess our African English natives were not as sensertive about fake things on television.

I watched a few of the censored 11 when I was little. My teacher would put on looney toons and Merry Melodies when we were helpful in class. I never thought they were funny. “Why do the black men look like that? They don’t usually look like that. Are they monsters? They don’t seem like monsters.” I used to have _nightmares_ about juggle jitters. God that short is gross.

I think of these cartoons as points in history. Although they are controversial, they are pieces in history. When I look at them now, I look at them for educational reasons. They were the norm at the time. We can look at these as how we improved in the present day. We grew out of pointing and laughing at another culture and that we won’t repeat the same mistakes in the past.

I argue that the Pokémon shock was the most important incident in television history. Nowadays, TV shows, movies and even KZbin videos have to warn of photosensitive content. Would that have happened without the exposure this incident got?

The only expression I had during The Censored Elven was 😦. Good lord hearing an icon like Bugs Bunny call people “Monkey Face” is something that would get you blacklisted today, let alone be aired along side hundreds of other Looney Tunes likes it’s completely normal

20:29: Although the ride is being remodeled as of this comment, the connection between Splash Mountain and DisneyLand is still prominent with "Disneyland Adventures" available as an XBox Kinnect game, and as a PC game. You can still find Br'er Rabbit (voiced by Jess Harnell in the game) among the many colorful Disney characters. In other words, your point still stands.
