Point 3 is actually a mistake on Rowling's part. In at least three instances it is quite heavily implied, if not to say stated that Hermione is light-skinned and probably caucasian. 1) In "Prisoner of Azkaban", when Harry is reunited with Hermione, it is noted that Hermione visibly tanned over the summer, after her vacation in Southern France. This would imply that Hermione regular skintone is rather light, for it to be this noticable. 2) Again, in "Prisoner of Azkaban", we have the following allusion to a light skin colour for Hermione. In Chapter 21, Hermione's Secret, page 293, we find the following phrase: "Hermione's white face was sticking out from behind a tree." While this is a result of the fear and anxiety she is feeling at that moment in time, when phrased like this, it is easy to assume that her fear makes her look even paler than usual. Which in turn would mean, she is pale-skinned usually. 3) In "Half-Blooded Prince", Chapter 5, "An Excess of Phlegm", we find the heaviest implication that Hermione is in fact pale of skin: "But when Harry arrived downstairs ten minutes later, fully dressed and carrying his empty breakfast tray, it was to find Hermione sitting at the kitchen table in great agitation, while Mrs Weasley tried to lessen her resemblance to half a panda." Seeing how they were trying to cover up a black eye, and seeing what a panda looks like, such comparison only makes sense if Hermione is indeed white. Personally, I don't give a shit how the theater writer decided to cast her, I'm all for artistic freedom and freedom of interpretation and if Rowling would simply have stated that she has no problem with said casting, I wouldn't have even bothered giving it a second thought. But saying that the novels never alluded to Hermione's skin color is nonsense.
@exitpursued66906 жыл бұрын
AGREED. Rowling also specifies every time a character is black (Lee Jordan, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Dean Thomas, etc.). So why not do this EVER for Hermione, who appears hundreds of times more than those side characters? I'm all for artistic freedom, too. No problem in casting a black actress to play a character previously described as white, especially if the character's race doesn't matter to her arc and story. But pretending that she hadn't written Hermione as white made me think a lot less of JKR.

MoonstonePearl21 Well I disagree. I think your white guilt is showing and though you say it has nothing to do with racism, you do express some light undertones of it. Because for one, J.K. never confirmed Hermione was white, and in the books it never stated she was white and in fact it heavily implied she wasnt white either. You also seem to forget that J.K had this set in stone waaaaay before the books developed, so NO it wasn't a political statement, its just you projecting your hate towards political correctness and your distaste for liberals. Anyone who isnt bothered by this can read through your sugar coating, but what ever I guess. Join the bandwagon I guess lol

Repuglibe SandersVonRubio The book stated she was white several times: When Hermione and the Wesleys went to the bookshop? (not sure which shop it was) They met Mister Malfoy who asked if Hermione was one of Arthurs and Mollys children. Why would he ask that if she was black? Two white people don't have black children. So she must have been white. After a vacation she came back with tanned skin and lots of freckles. If a black person comes back from a vacation in a sunny country they are usually not described as tanned (normally their skin color doesn't change that much) "To Harry’s surprise, Hermione turned a very deep shade of pink at these words." Black people blush but they don't turn pink. Hermiones mother is described as a pale brunette with green eyes. So we know her mother is white. Hermione could be mixed at best. Emma Watson is a white actress. J.K. Rowling proved of her and never corrected anyone in the years the movie was filmed. So she approved of Hermione being white. I think Hermione being black is great but you have to understand that people are confused at first. We thought she was white now she is suddenly black that i confusing. Nothing more.
@G1Bryce6 жыл бұрын
Actually Hermione is described several times as having white features, especially her eyes. And Rowling confirmed in the 90's Hermione looks like she does on the original covers (she's white on every cover). So yeah keep pushing the anti-white agenda, you're just proving your racism towards whites.

She could be black, but it was JK Rowling's intention for her to be white when writing the books. But there is nothing wrong with portraying Hermione as black or thinking of Hermione as black if you want to... that definitely is not being racist toward white people. Hermione's skin was never directly specified at first, so many people assumed her to be white. And if Angelina Johnson or Dean Thomas' skin color had not been specified, they probably would assumed to be white too. The fact that people immediately assume every character to be white unless specified is an underlying problem in writing (although JK Rowling later eluded to Hermione being white by referring to her paleness, she could have been any other race when first introduced).

I love Snape’s character. I mean sure he did bad things and all but that’s what makes him great. It’s not like he’s perfect or anything though he’s the perfect mixture of hero and villain. That makes him stand out above all other characters. Plus his troubled past might have attributed towards his emotional resentment towards some characters but even with his flaws, he managed to be courageous and bold towards the end of the series. And sure he got jealous and angry sometimes and even leaned towards the dark path but he came back to do the right thing every time; his above mentioned qualities are some of the most common. His ordinary qualities are in fact the reason that he’s outstanding.

I enjoy him as a character because he is enigmatic throughout the series and is one of the most flawed and interesting characters in the whole series. However, I don't consider him outstanding as a person. I have no problem with people who do, I guess it all comes down to what stands out most for you, the reader. I can't get past his years of verbal abuse and cold anger towards children, let alone how incredibly mean he was to Harry and Neville specifically. Yeah, his home life was seemingly terrible, and the girl he "loved" (to me it seems more like he was infatuated with her, but again just my opinion) ended up with his bully and was then killed by the very group he joined to feel like he belonged, BUTTTTTT I feel like he had every opportunity to turn over a new leaf or gain perspective through the things that happened to/around him, but he didn't. He stayed bitter and angry and cold. Circumstances mean a lot, but they're not an excuse when you're that old and taking personal responsibility is more meaningful to me.

If Hermione's skin color is never addressed in the books (honestly, I don't recall anyone having a designated skin color), why didn't they find someone of mixed heritage to play her...because it didn't come to matter until they cast a black actress to play her in the stage play. Why was Lavender Brown, who WAS a young black girl in the first two movies, suddenly transformed into a blonde, blue eyed, white girl for Ron's love interest? That is relevant in the context of the books/movies.
@HyouVizer7 жыл бұрын
Lavender Brown in the books was white, but never described. so they just casted a black girl for her, then in a later book its revealed she's white, so they got a white girl to recast her. just a fuck up on the casting issues prior lol
@danielskrivan69216 жыл бұрын
So keep her black in the casting as a deviation from the source material, instead of suddenly changing her to be white, unless there's a major plot reason to do so (i.e. she gets badly sunburned, her character's history in northern European nobility becomes important, etc).

@I Am Groot J.K Rowling: Hermione was a Nigerian vampire the whole time, just hiding it with magic. That is why she could hypnotize professors into giving her a time turner. She was actually 200 years old when she went to Hogwarts. She pretended to just be good at reading when actually she just had mostly already understood the material from her long life. When she became minister she was discovered and turned back to human.
@angelwhispers20607 жыл бұрын
Honestly I don't think JKR has even read her own freaking books at least not recently. Hermione is very clearly pale-skinned with buckles and said over and over again. The only time her skin tone is mentioned as being Brown is after summer and friends with her family at which point she would probably have a skin tan just like any other Anglo-Saxon red-haired girl. I'm sure the actress who plays Hermione in the stage play is a lovely person but the simple fact of the matter is that this is a British book and there are very few people in the UK prior to to the year 1990 who would not have been a pale skin complexion. The primary influx populations were from India and other parts of the former Empire now I could see her one of these parents possibly being part Hindi a several of generations back on her having a perhaps more Asian looking face but her skin complexion would still be very pale. The books popularity in America and the racial b******* that happens over here as the reason JKR said that her mind wasn't necessarily White when her rice and freckles were clearly established to begin with.
@illusionofquality9796 жыл бұрын
Also, At first Brown was a black girl but was changed to white one when she became Ron's love interest. Why did they change her race? Because Rowling outright told them that she was in fact white. Despite never mentioning it in the books. She clearly pictures them (and draws them) with race in mind.

@Ikajo7 жыл бұрын
The problem with Dumbledore being gay is that it was handled poorly. It is not mentioned once in the books and most people didn't notice on their own. But a bigger issue is that Rowling didn't allow Dumbledore any relationship after Grindelwald. If it was no big deal to be gay in the wizarding world then it would have been completely normal to have same-sex relationships. Instead Dumbledore is not allowed another romance beyond his first. There are no other mention of same-sex coupling in the books. During the Yule ball it would have been the perfect moment to show inclusion. But nothing. All pairs are opposite sex and not one boy tries to ask Harry. So I don't buy Rowling's pandering when she didn't make any effort to properly include lgbt elements.
@atlasabsentee34267 жыл бұрын
I mean... Rowling probably just wanted points for being "so progressive". Many people will never even know about Dumbledore being gay unless they come across it on the internet. There was never any hints to Dumbledores sexuality in any of the books.

The personal lives of the teachers were not discussed at all in the books (except Snape's at the end, which was a crucial point). Otherwise there would be 70 not only 7 books. Sooo, really, I believe it was not necessary. Perhaps she just didn't think of all these aspects when writing, because it was not the point of this story. Maybe some more "hidden" messages would be fine, but the book was full enough with everything to put in "unnecessary" info that Harry didn't really need.

My only issue with it is consistency. I don't care about the race of the characters, but once you have one established in film, I don't think that should be changed in them. It's inconsistent and confusing. It's different for stage shows because a lot of different people play the same role. I agree. I don't like how this was done. It seems like she was just trying to make some sort of statement.

JK may call the coupling of Ron & Hermione wish fulfillment...I call it an easy way to tie up loose ends. This way, the Golden Trio stays friends without weirdness between them. If Harry & Hermione ended up together (my personal choice) it would have left Ginny & Ron out in the cold and would most likely have affected their adult relationships.

Cherry_420. Strongly agree. Later on in life what compelling reason would there be for Harry and Hermione to go to Arthur and Molly's house on hollidays if not as part of Ron and Ginny's families. It would be so awkward for them I think that eventually they would stop going and would just grow more and more apart from each other's lives. It would also suggest that Voldemort was right in what the locket showed Ron; and that evil SOB doesn't deserve to be right about anything!

@IceQueen9757 жыл бұрын
It WAS wish fulfillment and it shows. We writers have something called "don't pair the spares" because unless it makes sense it looks sloppy af. That's what she (somewhat) did with Harry and Ginny. It was pretty damn clean Harry and Hermione over time had really meshed, gotten close and could easily be a couple. She ripped that apart with Ron because she forced the characters. Now, Ginny was well established to like Harry so no issue on her half. But Harry never really cared beyond "best friend's sister" so him liking her is what I can't believe.

You know, I feel like JK thinks that she can make up things about the wizarding world just because she's written the series. Yes, I know this sentence seems kinda crazy, but everyone knows that Hermione is white. I have no problem with black people, if that's what u think, but JK Rowling wrote about Hermione's "pale skin" and also her "white skin" multiple times throughout the series, so saying that she never made any reference to her skin colour in novel is just bs. And pale and white skin can show that a character is afraid, but it also proves that Hermione Granger is WHITE. JK can't make everything up just so people think she's a really great person (which she naturally is, I'm sure). She can't rewrite what has been written. To have written so many wonderful books, I would have expected her to actually have given some thought into what information she gives us on the wonderful world that she created. And I'm not overreacting, guys, I just don't like when people lie (or do anything alike). I guess it's my zodiac sign's fault.....

whats wrong with you? Harry was bored when he was cooped up in the library all the time with her (4th book when Ron were mad on him and same shit in the 7th book when they were alone after ron left) what would that relationship be? and luna made him slightly uncomfortable (5th book early on on the train, and later when she is running around with radishes in her ears and also all the crazy ideas she haves). you 2 will never be matchmakers that's for sure.
@khlo99007 жыл бұрын
lolsa123 first of all, just cause Luna is weird doesn't mean she's a nice person and just cause Hermione is a bookworm doesn't mean she's a brave woman, Harry didn't like to Hang out with Hermione because he doesn't read as much as her and yes sometimes Harry is uncomfortable with Luna but she inspires him. Second, some people have their own opinions, so you saying we are not going to end up being matchmakers makes no sense considering JK Rowling herself said she changes her mind and wanted Harry and Hermione together
@gamerz34146 жыл бұрын
Snape is like my favorite character. He was such a brave person! And sometimes I imagine if he would have been a father figure to Harry if he'd been sorted into Slytherin. Snape just didn't like Gryffindor.... And the fact that the son of the woman he loved looked like his childhood bully and only had her eyes( which by the way were supposed to be green!)

Well for Hermione, since she did graduate, there would've had been no problem getting a job at the Ministry. And Kingsley Shacklebolt offered immediate Auror training to the school-aged and young adult survivors of the Battle of Hogwarts. As for casting Noma in Cursed Child, I was against it simply because I didn't rate her much as an actress, and I hated the play...what a crap storyline, especially concerning the conception of Delphini Diggory. (Although I did find it odd since over the course of 8 films, and judging by the book illustrations, it's pretty clear what race Hermione was.)
@kamion537 жыл бұрын
let's face it Jamie Parker from Cursed Child come closer to the Harry Potter image on Deathly Hallows ( by Jason Cockcroft) then Daniel Radcliffe ever came. when writing the author left it to the reader to make up their mind what the characters looked like unless she thought it necesay to mention some features A lot of us did not get the change to make an independent imagination of the characters after the movies became out. Seeing the movie first and then reading the books sets your mind a bit ( solid) and don't forget the books made thier big big flow after the first HP movie. So many of us already had the ace in their mind before opening the first page. I had complete different vision of for instance Umbridge or Slughorn; Imelda Staunton is simply too pretty to be the froglike creature from the books ( she however made up very well with her sweet-poisonous play), and Bob Hoskin comes much closer to Slughorn then Broadbent who actually filled those shoes. The Weasley twins are also opposite of their book description. But does it matter? No the characters look like what's in your own head, no matter how the are pictured in the media.
@NoodleyBits7 жыл бұрын
It is actually mentioned in the books on at least two occasions that Hermione was white...I think JKR must have forgotten that. It's mentioned about her "white face".

Nope I can surely not agree, can we stop the "we all agree" bullshit. There are people who can appreciate the beauty of cursed child and don't think it's written like fanfiction (what doesn't even mean anything as there are brilliant and bad fanfiction out there). If that's your opinion, well bad for you and your enjoyement I guess, but not everyone can agree and a lot really enjoyed it a lot. So please stop the "we ALL agree" things, thanks. I think the people who gave Jack Thorne his Olivier Award would disagree, too or all the people who voted cursed child best fantasy book of 2016. Just saying that it's definetly not everyone...
@FarsirisCassidy7 жыл бұрын
musical-phan 24601 only idiots who do not understand HP universe can like that bullshit. Time turners cannot let you change the past, because all the changes happened in the first place in the then-present. It is the whole point of PoA. If it weren't so, time-turner Harry would not have been able to send away all the dementors and save his own life and life of Sirius. By using time turner, you just ensure everything happens exactly the same way it already did. So the whole premise of the Cursed child flat out contradicts the mechanics of HP magic and universe....
@FarsirisCassidy7 жыл бұрын
musical-phan 24601 Rowling totally screwed up everything by supporting Cc. Every true fan can tell you that. Plus, has it occurred to you that McGonagall was exaggerating to force Hermione to truly take it seriously? After all, she was just a child with very irresponsible friends and she was naive to believe everything a teacher would tell her. PoA is very consistent on it, plus the whole premise of new Time turners working differently is flat out stupid because that would mean truly altering universal physics and magic, as explained in books, does bound to rules. It was just a nonsense created for the sake of that stupid fanfic.

Ron is emotionally and mentally abusive to Hermione the entire time they are together at Hogwarts. How does that make a good couple? The only reason him and Hermione even became friends was because of Harry. If Harry hadn't suggested they go save her from the troll at Halloween, she would have died. Ron wouldn't have done anything. Also, I agree with you about Cursed Child not being canon. Basically if Ron doesn't marry Hermione, she becomes a professor at Hogwarts that's worse than Snape at being vindictive? No way that would have happened.
@bluegreen53777 жыл бұрын
Gotta correct you here, Rowling did NOT write about all 11 schools. She wrote about some of them. Hermione could be mixed at most since her mother was in fact described as white.
@anthonyfarshaw86197 жыл бұрын
There's also a scene in Goblet of Fire in which (I think) Amos Diggory asks Arthur Weasley if all children are his. Why would he ask that if Hermione was not white? Seems obvious Arthur and Molly could not possible be the parents of a black child. Nor is it possible for a black person to have their skin go white or pink. Ergo, Hermione is white.
@zararoyce3197 жыл бұрын
Blue Green even the idea of being mixed in my opinion is pushing it I think this is just something they did to appear to be more inclusive in to get the support of all the female minority types of groups who might've been saying that they're tired of going and watching a ton of pretty white actresses because she was definitely described in the book is having bushy brown hair so that means that she wasn't fully black and she was also described as being really brown and freckly when she can came back from the vacation in the south of France with her parents in the second book so she's definitely not black maybe being mixed could be a discussion but even then I think it is really pushing it because I think it's also important to keep in mind that the characters who were black/African were described as such it's not like there are no black characters
@zararoyce3197 жыл бұрын
Anthony Stargaryen yeah and in the second book it talked about her when she came back from the south of France with her parents but as looking particularly brown and frankly it also gives her bushy brown hair several times in the books so she was certainly not fully black there's absolutely no way the biracial Siri could be a possibility but I still think it's a push just to be politically correct now days so that they can cast more "diverse characters" and it's not as if there aren't any colored characters or anything there are a lot of diverse characters in the book and they are specifically described as being such I think this is really grasping at straws's just so that one of the main three characters can be something other than Caucasian to make people happy
@bluegreen53777 жыл бұрын
Oh I agree it'd be pushing it, I'm just saying she could be mixed at most. Rowling is ridiculous for acting like Hermione was never described as having any race. I wouldn't care much about the play casting a black actress because the play itself is shit, but Rowling's comment annoyed me. Also, Hermione's face was described as white when she was scared of something, so it seals the deal for me. She wasn't described as going pale, but specifically white.

Great point about Diggory, Anthony! You're absolutely right. Just proves even more that Rowling is trying too hard to be PC.
