I find the post mortem photos intriguing. They sometimes they painted eyes on the lids to make them seem open. It's hard to tell who is alive or deceased in some of the pics. I've read easy way with children's pics is to look at the one that is Crystal clear.... apparently it took so long to take the pics the kids would end up squirming.

I have no idea why Victorian era is so often pictured in a romanticised way in media. It was a terrible time to actually live in.

So many inaccuracies in this video, unfortunately. For example, yes, surgery in the Victorian era was often horrific by today's standards, but anesthetics were being trialed even before that time period -- nitrous oxide in the late 1790s, ether in 1818 -- and by the mid-1800s, Queen Victoria herself was given chloroform to help with the pain of childbirth. It had been used before that in surgeries, knocking patients out and relieving pain, and both ether and chloroform were in regular use after she hailed it. (P.S. The Victorian Era is 1837-1901)

When did Laudanum start being used? Wasn't that for pain too?
@amb1632 жыл бұрын
@@penny_the_wiser413 Laudanum (a combo of alcohol and opium) was developed in the 1600s, but opium was available long before that.

Freak show freaks were actually paid very well

I would dispute that. Other than Tom Thumb and his wife as well as others, they were poorly paid, cruelly treated and had no way to escape because of their deformities.

I don't know if I was hearing right. My understanding is that the metal frames were used to keep people from moving their heads. It took so long for the pictures to "imprint" on the glass plates the pictures might look blurry. The metal frames were not used to prop up dead bodies for post mortem photos, they were too thin to hold up the weight of a dead body. The children may have been seated on a person's lap without showing that. or been propped up in some other way.

Do a video on worst jobs...in England,a person called "Groom of the Stool" had the job of collecting and documenting each bowel movement that the king made throughout his entire lifetime...(true !) ...and this was actually considered a prestigious and desirable job back then too!( seems like a pretty shitty job to me though!)
