@@NerdImmersion I suppose they mean go over how things are classified as magic from a rules perspective. For example, an actual dragon's breath weapon isn't intended to count as magical so it wouldn't proc (and a Brass one could potentially force an Elf or similar to sleep, but not an Aspect of the Moon Tomelock as that says nothing can rather than just magic), but the spell Dragon's Breath is. I believe the list is: Says it's magic, is a spell (or explicitly calls out that it's duplicating a spell), is a magic item, is fueled by spell slots, is a spell attack?

14:50 on elves, trance, and long rest: From the Sage Advice Compendium "Does the Trance trait allow an elf to finish a long rest in 4 hours? If an elf meditates during a long rest (as described in the Trance trait), the elf finishes the rest after only 4 hours. A meditating elf otherwise follows all the rules for a long rest; only the duration is changed." So, yeah, Elves finish a long rest in 4 hours.

Playing as a Yuan-Ti Pureblood Paladin of Vengeance (Level 5 at the time, just turned 6) - let's just say that poison immunity and magic resistance mean nothing when your foes don't use them! And as for Suggestion - it don't work on demons or the undead! Depending on the DM, if you got that one player, who seems to have that character that's immune to the pre-planned foe, give the foe *One* buddy that can "tank" Mr. Special. Let's just say that my Yuan-Ti Paladin had a run-in with some succubi - almost killed him and the rest of the party - to be fair, I was also out of spell slots, and there was a gem that reduced the effects of healing spells, and prior encounters had cost others some spell slots, and the fight was supposed to be difficult - even the DM was thinking that it could potentially lead to a party wipe out - my Yuan-Ti got knocked out thrice, and brought back thrice - the guy rolling for the DM (who is legally blind) actually had to check the rules to see if I was unconscious or Dead-Dead after the third time (also a plus, thanks to a random magic item roll, got that amulet thingy of Wound Closure, so I'm good on Death Saves) and thus the rules said that I was unconscious, so when I was healed, yet again, by the Cleric, I went after Miss Red (One was a red-head, the other had black hair, so that Assistant, who kept track of monster hp and rolled for the DM, could sort them out easily). We'd been having this Dance of Death throughout the encounter, especially after she gave me Quite the Kiss (34 psychic damage) and had cause my death, twice! either directly or indirectly (she'd charmed the Druid, who had knocked me out the second time.) Finally, gave her a smack good enough to get rid of her from this plane, and the other, who was also on her last legs, decided to leave this plane. Long story short - when you kill a snake, remove the head.

I really like the gnome. Having advantage against wisdom, intelligence, and charisma saving throws is super helpful. Also, I was a rock gnome and the tinker ability, to make little clockwork devices, made for really good distractions. I had my gnome wizard make a music box, mage hand to set it down 30 feet away, and open it. The guards were distracted, allowing my group to pass. Came in handy a lot
@yuvalamir32264 жыл бұрын
Really hoped to see the firbolg on this list. The most underappreciated race in my opinion. They get +2 to wisdom (one of the only races in 5e) and +1 to strength, they can use detect magic and disguise self once per short rest (with their version of disguise self allowing them to get up to 3 feet shorter to help them blend in since they are 7-8 feet tall). They also get hidden step, which allows them to go invisible using a bonus action until their next turn. This only gets disabled when they do an offensive action so healing spells are fair game. They also get powerful build (double caring weight) and speech of beast and leaf (a limited form of communication with nature and advantage on charisma checks to influence them) The flavor is also so cool. For more info on that check out this amazing video by MrRhexx: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppvHl6hsetSiZ7c and this nerdarchy video from 5:30: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6aZp6qnfqiYnK8 And if you want to check out the whole description: dnd5e.wikidot.com/firbolg

Flames of Phelgathos and Infernal Constitution while the Aasimar can only take all the normal feats, that added with the ton of Variety Tieflings get in comparison to the Aasimar is also notable. Not saying your pick is bad at all, Aasimar make my top 10 any day of the week, but after lv. 5. you've just about maxed out your potential for change and unique customization, though you continue growing in power till level 20 which is damn amazing and I wish more races did that...

Aasimar's probably my favorite. Especially the Scourge Aasimar, since its transformation is both an AoE damage-over-time and a boost to single-target damage. It does have the drawback of also damaging yourself, but 1) you are resistant to it since it's Radiant, and most creatures you fight will not be resistant, 2) you also get a +1 Constitution so you will probably have some extra hit points to work with, and 3) you also have an innate 1/long rest heal just in case. Plus, the flavor of it manifesting as searing light pouring from your eyes and mouth is metal AF.

(I'll get you out of retirement one day Bonzo) 2. Human-variant is a godsend with builds. 3. Half-orcs=love the flavor, I will admit I throw in a bit of 40k's ORK'S into the mix for fun. They HAVE to be green. 4. Yuanti-not only is it a powerful race with an immunity and the most powerful resistance, but the snake flavor is so classic bad guy, but the kind that works with the party. 5. Grung-climb speed, hops, and the best poisoner skill in the game (albeit one that doesn't scale), plus the frog puns and the best reason to act a fish out of water being so inhuman. 6. Warforged-metal men. I have a soft spot for gond moradin and hephaestus and the nature of divinity and it's ties to creation. Living craft where man himself can understand his own crafting makes for some good RP. Also they're pretty strong. 7. Kobolds-dragons are cool, little crafty dragon men are neat. They're unfortunately a weak race (gameplay and world wise) but I like the little guy's. I HATE that their skills are grovel it requires enemy cooperation what fool would rely on that. 8. Dwarves-if there is a more fun archetypical character to play than a dwarf I have yet to see it. Also see my opinion on Warforged. 9. Half-elves=I'm starting to struggle putting people on here but I've seen elves and tieflings played by complete twat-waffles and they have forever been tainted in my eyes. But for charisma classes you can always play a half-elf. 10. Gnomes-they tinker and make for good artificers, which I cant wait to play. Again see Warforged.

Huh, I didnt expect most of it to come from the PHB. I dont know, my favorites would include centaur, cause i really like the idea of a mount also being a party member. A paladin rider with mounted combatant feat might make a very interesting situation. And the centaur could maybe be a druid, or something, so his 4 legs dont affect him all the time. Changeling might be an interesting choice, in campaigns with a lot of social interactions. warforged just cause i like the roleplay idea. Simic hybrids seem interesting. Getting underwater breathing and extra appendages or +1 to armor class, or acid spray that increases with levels. Might make for an interesting, versatile barbarian.
@bouboulroz4 жыл бұрын
Simic hybrid barbarians are really cool to play. I took the carapace at level 5, but the more I think about it and the more I feel like the grappling appendages would have been better. The ability to control the battlefield is something barbarians often lacks, and being able to grapple multiple targets at the same time seems like a good way to keep your casters safe. And with the Path of the Beast subclass that will probably come with TCoE, the flavor of the predator adapted to any environment is only getting stronger.

Funny thing, depending upon the race, it's possible to make it so that all stats are 10 or better, even with Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) at level 1. If you want to make a wizard, or a sorcerer, or a warlock, where many like to dump strength, pick a race that has a Plus 2 there. Same for the other classes and most of the other races - everything could be 10 or better, with a few exceptions.... that being said, *Never make Constitution the Dump Stat!* After all, you need to be able to take more than a couple of punches. Still, as I look through my books, I can see how any of the races could be any of the classes, although some bring about funny pictures - like an Orc Wizard, a Kobold Paladin, a Tortle Rogue (had to pick that one), a Tabaxi Cleric, a Warforged Druid, Halfling Barbarian, Wood Elf Artificer, Bugbear Bard, Centaur Monk, Loxodon Ranger, Minotaur Sorcerer, Satyr Fighter, and Triton Warlock....... and then there's all the other race/class combos that make one go "Wait! What?"
@antongrigoryev63814 жыл бұрын
I can't see any reason to "fix" dumped stat. There's actually almost no difference between -1 and 0 - you probably won't use that stat often. It's much better to increase your casting stat - instead of taking +2 Strength take +2 Int.
@lockwoan014 жыл бұрын
@@antongrigoryev6381 True - it probably *would* be better for a wizard to take a +2 to Intelligence instead of Strength, especially if one is into the whole stat Min-Maxing - nothing wrong there, but what if you *did* want to play as an Orc Wizard, who was a little on the scrawny side compared to the rest of the orcs, but was smart enough to go to Wizard School and knew how to cast Fireballs by Belching! Now that would be fun to play as, especially since, if he's the sort that uses staves as his backup melee weapon, he can also bop a few heads decently as well - an 8 on a d8 does 8 damage instead of 7.

I'm surprised Aasimar didn't come up TBH! Like, holy shit. It's super good. Finally, you also get +1 to WIS, CON, or STR (Protector, Scourge, or Fallen)

I’m about to play a Tabaxi Wizard starting from 1st level. I think he’ll be fun to play and he’s in my DM’s first campaign so I picked a race/class combination that will start me out with a 15 in my primary ability score instead of 16 to make it easier on him.
@avis1993 жыл бұрын
I love that so much because the first character I ever played was a Tabaxi Warlock. He was such an amazing character and I love him so much. He's probably the best well-made character I've ever had. Sadly, due to the virus that campaign had a short run for a while due to not being able to meet up in person (but we later found out it was also because our dm had two other people he dm'd complain to him about the way he dm's which made him stop dm'ing for a while) but I think we are going to be resuming that campaign shortly so I am very excited for that.

A Hill Dwarf draconic sorcerer with a decent constitution score would be fairly durable. With a +3 con, that's +5 hp per character level. At 10th level, that's an expected HP total of 90. In fact, with equal +3 Con scores and assuming average hp die rolls, the fighter, paladin, and ranger would increase by +9 hp per level. The hill dwarf draconic sorcerer will also increase at +9 hp per level. The bards, monks, clerics, or wizards of the party would be jealous. Nice.

I'm pretty sure latest sage advice has Trance being equal to a long rest (the 2017 post)
@Nildread4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was confused by this. I usually just have anyone that trances either take watch or do light short rest type activities after or before they trance, while everyone else sleeps during their long rests.
@notLune4 жыл бұрын
@@Nildread I think some of the confusion comes from the original Sage Advice about Trance (2015 I think) said that Trance was simply flavor text ability and did not actually relate to long resting
@Nildread4 жыл бұрын
@@notLune I think it stems from not wanting elves to go off on their own adventures and do things while everyone else is sleeping. "If an elf meditates during a long rest (as described in the Trance trait), the elf finishes the rest after only 4 hours. A meditating elf otherwise follows all the rules for a long rest; only the duration is changed" this confuses me a bit as I understand it to mean that only the duration of sleep changes, but it kind of reads like the whole duration changes and elves get the benefit of a long rest from 4hours of meditation instead of 4 hours of meditation and 4 hours of doing light activity before everyone wakes up. It doesn't really matter for my games anyway because I consider crafting and most forms of prep to be light activity unless everyone wants to spend lots of downtime doing stuff or time preparing something. So my elves are usually crafting or practicing something or reading or taking watch or identifying items and not trying to run a head of everyone while they sleep, unless my players proposed a reason to do something like that and everyone one was okay with it.

I thought my Yuan-Ti Draconic Sorcerer/Hexblade Warlock would be pretty difficult for our new DM but he just used monsters/enemies that used AC attacks or spells rather than saves, or nonmagical traps needing a DEX save. Magic resistance doesn’t help against crossbow bolts, acid spewing traps, or medusa lion claw/bite attacks. As for Role-playing, his Draconic ancestry made him an impure outcast with other Yuan-Ti. Had to carve out a niche among humankind to avoid being by himself in the wilderness. Plus he could pass as a human by claiming all his scales were from his Draconic ancestry. So DMs, let your players play Yuan-Ti, you can still hit them with attacks/traps and they can pass as human easily enough.

As it has already been stated in the comments, I'm surprised there's no satyr mention. The race ASIs are so synergistic on Bard, Sorc, Warlock, Rogue or Dex pal, and those ability scores also govern a lot of skills. Magic resistance is straight up busted and being a fey is an advantage more often than not
@ericbest61564 жыл бұрын
Which is the "best" race probably depends more on the class you want to play than the race itself. For example, half-elves make fantastic Bards, Sorcerers (+CHA, +DEX, +CON) or Paladins (+CHA,, +STR, +CON), while hill dwarves obviously make great Clerics, wood elves' bonuses have wonderful synergies with the Monk or possibly the Rogue classes, and mountain dwarves, half-orcs and variant humans (with the right feats) ALL make amazing Barbarians. And let's not forget the less obvious choices. Playing a high elf Wizard as a good choice is a given, but what about an archery-based Eldritch Knight Fighter or Arcane Trickster Rogue? And I must say, playing a halfling Divination Wizard or an armored mountain dwarf Bard (*cough* Lore College *cough), Sorcerer, Warlock or Wizard both intrigue me, even though the highest spellcasting stat they can have, using either point buy or standard array, is a "mere" 15. ;) I guess what I'm saying is that "best" race should depend on what kind of character you want to play, and what bonuses you want to play with. Yes, some races have obvious benefits over others, but some of those hidden or seemingly minor benefits can be pretty awesome, too. (Also, I should point out that OF COURSE you're playing something that you're not, even if you're playing a variant human. You're playing a HERO, after all) :P
